        The purpose of this study is to investigate the storage characteristics of rough rice in a low temperature storage and dry bin using cooling system. The results were compared with the storage method of ambient temperature bin. The rough rice storage characteristics were evaluated from February to August 2010, using a storage and dry bin of 500 ton capacity. The results were as followings: Storage and dry bin using cooling system maintained the rice temperature less than 15oC over the storage period. The rough rice stored in the ambient temperature bin showed higher moisture content and lower germination rate than the rough rice stored in the bin using cooling system. The creaked rate and acid value of brown rice in the cooling bin storage increased less than the ambient temperature bin storage. The result indicates that storage bin using winter cold air and cooling system showed better maintaining germination of rice, less change of physiological activities and cracked kernel, and better maintaining of rice quality, comparing the ambient temperature bin

        Buckling response of offshore pipelines under combined tension and bending

        Offshore pipelines have to withstand combined actions of tension and bending during deepwater installation, which can possibly lead to elliptical buckle and even catastrophic failure of whole pipeline. A 2D theoretical model initially proposed by Kyriakides and his co-workers which carried out buckling response analysis of elastic-plastic tubes under various load combinations, is further applied to investigate buckling behavior of offshore pipelines under combined tension and bending. In association with practical pipe-laying circumstances, two different types of loadings, i.e., bent over a rigid surface in the presence of tension, and bent freely in the presence of tension, are taken into account in present study. In order to verify the accuracy of the theoretical model, numerical simulations are implemented using a 3D finite element model within the framework of ABAQUS. Excellent agreement between the results validates the effectiveness of this theoretical method. Then, this theoretical model is used to study the effects of some important factors such as load type, loading path, geometric parameters and material properties etc. on buckling behavior of the pipes. Based upon parametric studies, a few significant conclusions are drawn, which offer a theoretical reference for design and installation monitoring of deepwater pipelines.

      • Prevalence and Age, Gender and Geographical Area Distribution of Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinomas in North China from 1985 to 2006

        Objective: To establish the prevalence and distribution profile of esophageal squamous cell carcinomas (ESCCs) over a 22-yr period in North China. Methods: Using endoscopy for primary diagnosis and histological analysis for the further confirmation, a total of 74,854 ESCC patients aged 20-89 between January 1985 and December 2006 were investigated to analyze the epidemiological profile including prevalence rates, distribution of age-of-onset, gender and geographical area of ESCC in Luoyang, the highest incidence area of North China. Results: A total of 4092 cases of ESCC were finally diagnosed among 74,854 patients who had their first endoscopies. The prevalence among males was higher than that among females (p<0.01), resulting in an overall male:female OR of 1.2 (95%CI, 1.2-1.3). The prevalence in rural areas was higher than in urban areas (p<0.01), resulting in an overall rural:urban OR of 2.6 (95%CI, 2.4-2.9). The rural:urban ORs and the 95% CI increased continuously from 2.6, 2.3-3.0 to 2.7, 2.2-3.3, respectively, for 4 consecutive periods during the 22-yr study period. Moreover, the median age of onset among females was higher than that among males (p<0.01). For both sexes and in both areas, the prevalence rates declined and the median age of onset rose for 4 consecutive periods in the 22-yrs time frame (p<0.01). Conculsions: These data reveal the epidemiological profile of ESCC in the area of North China, and suggest that urban areas and rural people account for a growing proportion of the ESCC patients although the prevalence of ESCC significantly declined and the median age-of-onset postponed over the 22-yrs period. Moreover, the prevalence status of ESCC in rural areas also underlines the need for public health initiatives aimed at reducing risk factors of this fatal disease.

        Pseudolaric Acid B Induces Apoptosis Through p53 and Bax/Bcl-2 Pathways in Human Melanoma A375-S2 Cells

        Pseudolaric acid B is a major compound found in the bark of Pseudolarix kaempferi Gordon. In our study, pseudolaric acid B inhibited growth of human melanoma cells, A375-S2 in a time and dose-dependent manner. A375-S2 cells treated with pseudolaric acid B showed typical characteristics of apoptosis including morphologic changes, DNA fragmentation, sub-diploid peak in flow cytometry, cleavage of poly-ADP ribose polymerase (PARP) and degradation of inhibitor of caspase-activated DNase (ICAD). P53 protein expression was upregulated while cells were arrested at the $G_2/M$ phase of the cell cycle. There was a decrease in the expression of anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 and Bcl-xL proteins, whereas pro-apoptotic Bax was increased. The two classical caspase substrates, PARP and ICAD, were both decreased in a time-dependent manner, indicating the activation of downstream caspases.

        BMB Reports : siRNA-mediated gene silencing of MexB from the MexA-MexB-OprM efflux pump in Pseudomonas aeruginosa

        To gain insights into the effect of MexB gene under the short interfering RNA (siRNA), we synthesized 21 bp siRNA duplexes against the MexB gene. RT-PCR was performed to determine whether the siRNA inhibited the expression of MexB mRNA. Changes in antibiotic susceptibility in response to siRNA were measured by the E-test method. The efficacy of siRNAs was determined in a murine model of chronic P. aeruginosa lung infection. MexB-siRNAs inhibited both mRNA expression and the activity of P. aeruginosa in vitro. In vivo, siRNA was effective in reducing the bacterial load in the model of chronic lung infection and the P. aeruginosa-induced pathological changes. MexB-siRNA treatment enhanced the production of inflammatory cytokines in the early infection stage (P < 0.05). Our results suggest that targeting of MexB with siRNA appears to be a novel strategy for treating P. aeruginosa infections. [BMB Reports 2014; 47(4): 203-208]

      • Comparison of Complications of Peripherally Inserted Central Catheters with Ultrasound Guidance or Conventional Methods in Cancer Patients

        Objective: To compare the complications of peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC) by a modified Seldinger technique under ultrasound guidance or the conventional (peel-away cannula) technique. Methods: From February to December of 2010, cancer patients who received PICC at the Department of Chemotherapy in Jiangsu Cancer Hospital were recruited into this study, and designated UPICC if their PICC lines were inserted under ultrasound guidance, otherwise CPICC if were performed by peel-away cannula technique. The rates of successful placement, hemorrhage around the insertion area, phlebitis, comfort of the insertion arm, infection and thrombus related to catheterization were analyzed and compared on days 1, 5 and 6 after PICC and thereafter. Results: A total of 180 cancer patients were recruited, 90 in each group. The rates of successful catheter placement between two groups differed with statistical significance (P <0.05), favoring UPICC. More phlebitis and finger swelling were detected in the CPICC group (P <0.05). From day 6 to the date the catheter was removed and thereafter, more venous thrombosis and a higher rate of discomfort of insertion arms were also observed in the CPICC group. Conclusion: Compared with CPICC, UPICC could improve the rate of successful insertion, reduce catheter related complications and increase comfort of the involved arm, thus deserving to be further investigated in randomized clinical studies.

        On the Prediction of Arresting Efficiency of Integral Buckle Arrestors for Deepwater Pipelines

        Dedicated finite element models are developed to simulate the crossing of a pipeline integral buckle arrestor by a buckle propagating under the quasi-static, steady-state condition. In addition, broad parametric studies are conducted to identify the mechanism governing the arresting performance, which consider the geometric characteristics and material properties of the pipe and arrestor. Based upon the extensive study, the more reasonable empirical design formulas for the crossover pressure and the arresting efficiency are established by means of the partial fitting. Good agreements between the existing experimental results and the predictions demonstrate that the proposed empirical formula and the lower bound envelope line for the arresting efficiency provide a powerful design tool to estimate the arresting performance of such complex structure systems in engineering practices.

        Chemical Bonds-Conjugated Ag2SO3/NaNbO3 Hybrids as Efficient Photocatalysts: In-situ Fabrication, Characterization and Degradation of Rhodamine B and Methyl Orange

        The Ag2SO3/NaNbO3 hybrids have been fabricated via a facile method at room temperature. Several methods such as X-ray diffraction, UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to characterize the samples. Moreover, the photocatalytic activity of the samples was assessed by degradation of rhodamine B and methyl orange under the visible light illumination. Experimental results indicated the photocatalytic degradation efficiency of the as-fabricated hybrids was first increased and then decreased with increasing the dosage of NaNbO3. When the molar ratio of Ag2SO3 to NaNbO3 was 1:0.7, the as-fabricated composites had the best photodegradation efficiency of 96.4% in 30 min for rhodamine B and 97.1% in 60 min for methyl orange, respectively. These were obviously higher than that of pure samples. Furthermore, Ag2SO3 was conjugated with NaNbO3 via chemical-bonds rather than physical contact. In addition, the possible photocatalytic degradation mechanism was also provided and the main roles during the process of photocatalytic degradation were played by holes.

        Influence of carbonitriding on microstructure, residual stress and mechanical properties of graded cemented carbides

        The influences of carbonitriding treatment on the microstructure, residual stress and mechanical properties of Ti-containingcemented carbides are investigated. Three powder compacts of WC-7.0Co-2.0Ni-3.0Mo-0.5TiC cemented carbides were liquidphase sintered in vacuum at 1,300 oC for 1h. Three specimens with cobalt-enriched surface layers were obtained. They weresubsequently carbonized by a post-sintering heat treatment process in nitrogen. The carbonitriding treatment results in theformation of fine-grained TiN phases and N-diamond C phases in situ on their surfaces. X-ray diffraction spectrums revealtheir differences in the grain size and forming phases of the Ti-containing phases for cemented carbides before and aftercarbonitriding treatment. This method can reduce the grain size of Ti-containing hard phase and increase microstrains in it. To analyze the residual stress, the specimen before and after carbonitriding was measured by recording the peak positions foreach 2θ at five different tilt angles (ψ = 0 o,20.7 o, 30 o, 37.8 oand 45 o) by a X-ray diffractometer. The microstructure anddefects of cemented carbides were investigated by SEM before and after the carbonitriding treatment. It is concluded that:(1) high bond strength between the Ti-containing skin and the WC-Co substrate, (2) high wear resistance of the Ti-containing skinafter carbonitriding, (3) compression stress state existing in Ti-containing skin, (4) the technology of carbonitriding treatmentcontributes to form an aesthetic Ti-containing skin in the surface of cemented carbides and improve its wear resistance.
