        Original Articles : Biochemical Composition of Muscle from Tanaka`s Eelpout Lycodes tanakae, Magistrate Armhook Squid Berryteuthis magister, and Ocean Sunfish Mola mola, Caught in the East Sea, Korea

        The biochemical composition of muscle from three deep-sea animals, Tanaka`s eelpout Lycodes tanakae magistrate armhook squid Berryteuthis magister, and ocean sunfish Mola mola caught in the East sea in South Korea was determined, The moisture (81.4-93.8 g/100 g), crude protein (5.0-15.6 g/100 g), crude lipid (0.1-1.5 g/100 g), and ash (1.0-1.1 g/100 g) contents of the two fishes were analyzed. The proximate composition of magistrate armhook squid was: moisture 84.0 g/100 g, crude protein 12.4 g/100 g, crude lipid 0.7 g/100 g, and ash 1.5 g/100 g. There was little difference in the proximate compositions of the three animals. The total amino acid contents of Tanaka`s eelpout, magistrate armhook squid, and ocean sunfish were 14.64, 10.75, 3.10-9.95 g/100 g, respectively. High levels of glutamic acid, aspartic acid, lysine, leucine, and arginine were found, while low levels of histidine, glycine, and cysteine were detected in the animals. A survey of the free amino acid contents of the animals revealed large amounts of alanine and glycine. Significant differences were found in the fatty acid composition among the three species. Specially, different saturated fatty acids (17.14-40.49%) such as C16: 0, and C18:0, monounsaturated fatty acids (19.19-46.88%) such as C16:1, and C18:1, and polyunsaturated fatty acids (35.41-57.08%) such as EPA, and DHA was identified. Our results suggest that each of these deep sea animals possesses nutritional value and should be considered as a foodstuff.

        한국 연근해 어류 14종의 일반성분 및 지방산 조성

        Proximate and fatty acid compositions in muscle tissue were studied in 14 species of coastal and offshore fishes in Korea. Lipid content ranged from 0.57 to 10.5% and was higher in migratory and reef dwelling fishes than in demersal fishes. Protein content ranged from 14.4 to 20.3% and moisture content ranged from 72.4 to 81.8% in all fish samples. There was a negative correlation between lipid and moisture content in all fish samples (r= -0.90, P<0.001). The prominent fatty acids were 16:0, 22:6n-3 (docosahexaenoic acid, DHA), 18:1n-9, 20:5n-3 (eicosapentaenoic acid, EPA), 16:1n-7, 18:0 and 18:1n-7. Most demersal fishes contained considerably higher amounts of 20:4n-6 and/or 22:5n-3 compared with migratory and reef dwelling fishes. The proportion of total polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA), including DHA and EPA, was higher in demersal fishes (38.6-54.0%) than in migratory and reef dwelling fishes (23.5-35.2%).

        다의적 모호성의 광고효과에 관한 연구

        It has long been argued that the simpler and clearer the advertising message is, the more effective it will be. More recently, however, some scholars began to report that rather abstract and ambiguous advertisements can be as or more effective. Moreover, in practice, quite a number of advertisements are found to employ the latter approach. Thus, in this paper, we attempt to examine the effects of visual polysemy in advertising (i.e., a type of ambiguity) on consumers’attitude toward the ad and the brand, and propose two moderating factors in this relationship: cognitive resources and product type.Consistent with the literature on semiotics, we conceptualize ambiguity or polysemy as being present when a word or message is associated with multiple meanings, which would lead to different interpretations depending on the recipient or situation. It has been suggested that polysemy used in communication can generate positive responses from the audience for various reasons. First, when a consumer is exposed to a message with polysemy, she is likely to experience a certain degree of arousal initially, resulting in positive emotions (arousal boost). Then, if the consumer successfully comprehends or interprets the meanings of the message, her initial arousal will be reduced. This will give her feelings of pleasure (arousal jag). Second, a consumer should concentrate her cognitive resources on the task when attempting to interpret a polysemous message. This, in turn, is likely to prevent her from coming up with counter arguments or negative thoughts about the advertisement, which will facilitates her to form favorable attitudes toward it.The proposed effects of polysemy have rarely been tested empirically. In marketing, an exception was found in McQuarrie and Mick (1992), which investigated how consumers would respond to polysemy included in the ad headline and its resonance with a pictorial body. Our paper is to replicate their findings in the context of visual polysemy, and to identify factors that may moderate the effects of polysemy. We propose, first, cognitive resources available to a consumer as a potential moderator, based on the fact that polysemy requires a substantial amount of cognitive efforts from the consumer to be successfully processed and comprehended. That is, a message with polysemy is expected to be effective only when a consumer has a high likelihood of elaboration. In our study, the elaboration likelihood is determined by an amount of cognitive resources available to her when a consumer is processing the message. This prediction is consistent with the resource matching theory, which suggests that consumers show more favorable responses when the amount of cognitive resources required to process a stimulus matches to that available to them. Thus, H1 posits that the effects of visual polysemy in advertising will be moderated by the amount of cognitive resources available to a consumer.The type of products is proposed as the second moderating factor. It is well known that consumers tend to undergo different psychological processes depending on whether they are dealing with utilitarian or hedonic products. The evaluation process for utilitarian products tends to be more cognitively driven, and thus consumers focus primarily on the objective and tangible attributes of the product. These characteristics imply that ad messages should be presented in a clear and objective fashion so as to elicit better responses. On the other hand, the evaluation process for hedonic products tends to be highly subjective and affect-driven, primarily based on aesthetics, taste, and sensory experience, and on how well the product communicates its desired meanings. Therefore, the ambiguity and abstractness of ad messages are suitable for stimulating the subjective and diverse nature of the hedonic processing.         45세 이하의 유방암환자에서 조직미세배열법을 이용한 면역조직화학적 생체표지자의 역할

        목 적: 45세 이하의 유방암 환자의 종양조직의 파라핀 블록을 조직미세배열법(Tissue Microarray, TMA)으로 만들어 에스트로겐 수용체(ER), 프로게스테론 수용체(PR), HER-2, COX-2 및 Survivin 등 5가지의 생체표지자의 발현상태 와 상호관계, 환자의 치료 후 추적관찰 상태와 관련성을 분석하여 예후인자로서의 의의를 연구하는 데 있다. 대상 및 방법: 1994년 3월부터 2005년 8월까지 수술을 시행한 45세 이하의 유방암 환자 중에서 TMA 분석이 가능한 212명의 환자를 대상으로 하였다. 환자의 나이는 23세부터 45세까지로 중앙 나이가 39세이었으며 최소 추적관찰기간은 24개월, 중앙 추적 관찰기간은 60개월이었다. 45세 이하의 환자를 선택한 후 수술 조직표본을 찾아 HE염색된 슬라이드를 통해 암 부위를 표시한 후 TMA 장비를 통해 미세조직배열을 만들었다. 그리고 다섯 가지 생체표지자에 대한 면역조직화학 염색을 시행하였으며 병리전문의가 판독하였다. 그리고 이 결과와 환자들의 연령, 병기, 림프절 전이, 수술방법, 다양한 약물요법과 가족력 등 여러 가지 인자와 환자의 추적 관찰 결과를 입력하여 예후인자들을 분석하였다. 결 과: T 병기에 따른 환자 분포는 T1이 90명, T2가 101명으로 다수를 차지하였고 105명(49.5%)에서 액와 림프절의 전이가 있었다. 모든 환자의 5년 무병 생존율과 5년 생존율은 각각 82.3%, 90.4%이었으며 36명의 환자가 국소재발이나 원격전이가 추적 관찰기간에 발생하였고 20명은 암과 관련하여 사망하였다. ER, PR, HER-2, COX-2, 그리고 survivin의 양성 발현비율은 각각 38.2%, 45.3%, 25.9%, 41.5%와 43.4%이었으며 종양의 크기, 나이, 림프절 전이의 여부, 호르몬 수용체의 상태, 그리고 HER-2의 상태가 무병 생존기간에 대한 단변량 분석상 중요한 예후인자 이었으며 생존율에 미치는 영향은 종양의 크기, 림프절의 전이, 호르몬 수용체, 그리고 HER-2의 발현이었다. COX-2나 survivin은 예후인자로서의 역할을 찾을 수 없었으나 HER-2와 COX-2가 동시에 발현되는 경우에 예후가 나쁜 경향을 관찰할 수 있었다. 다변량 분석상 오직 T-병기와 림프절의 전이 여부만이 중요한 예후 인자이었고 ER은 경계의 의미가 있었다. 결 론: 45세 이하의 여성 유방암 환자에서 호르몬 수용체 상태와 HER-2는 예후인자이었고 COX-2와 survivin은 예후인자로서의 역할을 찾을 수 없었다. Purpose: This study evaluates the association of estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR), Her-2, COX-2, and survivin with the clinicopathological features and outcomes in young Korean women with breast cancer using recently developed tissue microarray (TMA) technology. Materials and Methods: A cohort of 212 young patients with breast cancer diagnosed at the age of 45 years or younger from March 1994 to August 2005, were enrolled in this study. The age range of patients was 23∼45 years (median age, 39 years). The minimum and median follow-up periods were 24 months and 60 months, respectively. Serial sections of primary tumors were processed by the use of a TMA for immunohistochemical staining for five biomarkers. The correlation of these five biomarkers and the clinicopathological features and outcomes were analyzed by statistical methods.Results: The majority of the patients were stage T1 (90 patients) or T2 (101 patients), and 105 patients (49.5%)had an axillary node metastasis. The 5-year overall and relapse free survival rates for all of the patients were 90.4% and 82.3%, respectively, and 36 patients had a locoregional or distant metastasis as a first event. Positive expression of ER, PR, Her-2, COX-2, and survivin was determined in 38.2%, 45.3%, 25.9%, 41.5%, and 43.4%, of the tumor samples, respectively. Tumor stage, nodal status, age, as well as expression of ER, PR, and HER-2 status were significantly associated with the disease free survival rate. Tumor stage, nodal status, as well as expression of ER, PR, and HER-2 were significantly related with the overall survival rate. Expression of COX-2 and survivin were not single independent prognostic factors for the disease free and overall survival rate although co-expression of HER-2 and COX-2 had a tendency as a poor prognostic factor. By multivariate analysis, only T stage and lymph node status were significant prognostic factors, and ER status was a marginally significant prognostic factor (p=0.075). Conclusion: Expression of ER, PR and HER-2 were significant prognostic factors for the relapse free and overall survival rate. Expression of COX-2 and survivin were not prognostic factors for young women with breast cancer.

      • Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor Mutations and Response to Chemotherapy in Patients with Non-Small-Cell Lung Cancer

        <P><B>Background:</B> The association of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutations with the response to conventional cytotoxic chemotherapeutic agents in non-small-cell lung cancer patients has not been investigated. We retrospectively analyzed the associations between response to chemotherapy and molecular markers associated with gefitinib responsiveness including EGFR mutations.</P><P><B>Methods:</B> EGFR (exons 18, 19 and 21) and K-ras mutations (exon 2) were studied by direct sequencing and p-Erk and p-Akt expressions were studied by immunohistochemistry in archival paraffin embedded tissues. Response rate (RR) and time-to-progression (TTP) of prior chemotherapy by platinum, paclitaxel and gemcitabine were analyzed with respect to the presence of EGFR and K-ras mutations, and p-Erk and p-Akt expressions.</P><P><B>Results:</B> Of 90 patients investigated, 75 received platinums and 45 received paclitaxel as first-line chemotherapy agents. The RRS and TTPS of platinum- and paclitaxel-containing regimens were not affected by EGFR or K-ras mutations, nor by p-Erk or p-Akt expression. Fifty-seven patients received gemcitabine as first- or second-line chemotherapy. RR was not affected by EGFR or K-ras mutations or by p-Akt expression. However, all responders to gemcitabine exhibited (+) p-Erk expression [RR 30.6% for p-Erk (+) versus 0% for p-Erk (−), <I>P</I> = 0.01]. TTP was not affected by EGFR or K-ras mutations or by p-Erk or p-Akt expression.</P><P><B>Conclusions:</B> EGFR mutations did not affect response to conventional chemotherapeutic agents, namely platinums, paclitaxel and gemcitabine. Our results also suggest that it may be undesirable to use gemcitabine in patients with tumors not expressing p-Erk.</P>

        저자들은 본 병원 산부인과에서 최근 Arnold-Chiari 기형 1례를 경험하였기에 문헌 고찰과 함께 보고하는 바이다. The Arnold-Chiari malformation(ACM) is an anomaly of the hindbrain consisting of two components: a variable displacement of a tongue of tissue derived from the inferior cerbellar vermis in the upper cervical cannal and a similar caudal dislocation of the medulla and fourth ventricle. Hydrocephalus and meningomyelocele are another abnormalities that associated frequently. We present a case of Arnold-Chiari malformation with hydrocephalus and meningomyeolcele and a brief review of the literatures was added.
