박경련(Kyung Ryun Park),이상길(Sang Gil Lee),남태규(Tae Gyu Nam),김영준(Young Jun Kim),김영록(Young-Rok Kim),김대옥(Dae-Ok Kim) 한국식품과학회 2009 한국식품과학회지 Vol.41 No.1
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of various solvents on extraction of bioactive phenolics and to analyze the antioxidant capacity and contents of individual catechins in various grades of green teas organically grown in Boseong, Korea. The organic green teas, based on their harvest seasons, were categorized into five grades such as Woo-Jeon, Se-Jak, Jung-Jak, Dae-Jak, and coarse tea. Solvents used to extract phenolics from these teas included water at 23℃ and 70℃ as well as 80% (v/v) aqueous methanol and ethanol. In general, aqueous organic solvents of methanol and ethanol led to higher extraction yields of phenolics than water at 23℃ and 70℃. Total phenolics and antioxidant capacity of the teas extracted with the aqueous organic solvents were approximately 1.5 to 3.2 and 1.8 to 3.8 times higher than those with water at 23℃ and 70℃, respectively. Coarse tea, the lowest grade of green tea, showed approximately 30-60% lower total phenolics and antioxidant capacity compared with the higher grade ones. Reversed-phase HPLC analysis was performed quantitatively to identify individual catechins, gallic acid, and caffeine in teas extracted with 80% (v/v) aqueous methanol. Based on their dry weights, the organic green teas contained about 1.7 to 2.9% of caffeine. Content (㎎/g dry weight) of tea catechins decreased in the following order: Woo-Jeon (155.4) > Se-Jak (147.7) > Jung-Jak (143.2) > coarse tea (135.1) > Dae-Jak (130.5). (-)-Epigall℃atechin gallate was the most abundant among the catechins analyzed. The highest grade of green tea, Woo-Jeon, had the highest amount of (-)-epigall℃atechin gallate at 77.4 ㎎/g dry weight. Overall, the higher grade of organic green teas tended to have the higher level of antioxidant capacity and catechins.

<P> The characteristics of 0.15-<TEX>$\mu\hbox{m}$</TEX> InAlAs/InGaAs pseudomorphic high-electron mobility transistors (p-HEMTs) that were fabricated using the Ne-based atomic layer etching (ALET) technology and the Ar-based conventional reactive ion etching (RIE) technology were investigated. As compared with the RIE, the ALET used a much lower plasma energy and thus produced much lower plasma-induced damages to the surface and bulk of the <TEX>$\hbox{In}_{0.52}\hbox{Al}_{0.48}\hbox{As}$</TEX> barrier and showed a much higher etch selectivity ( <TEX>$\sim$</TEX>70) of the InP spacer against the <TEX>$\hbox{In}_{0.52}\hbox{Al}_{0.48} \hbox{As}$</TEX> barrier. The 0.15-<TEX>$\mu\hbox{m}$</TEX> InAlAs/InGaAs p-HEMTs that were fabricated using the ALET exhibited improved <TEX> <TEX>$G_{M, \max}$</TEX></TEX> (1.38 S/mm), <TEX>$I_{\rm ON}/I_{\rm OFF} (\hbox{1.18} \times \hbox{10}^{4})$</TEX> , drain-induced barrier lowering (80 mV/V), threshold voltage uniformity ( <TEX>$V_{{\rm th},{\rm avg}} =\break -\hbox{190} \ \hbox{mV}$</TEX> and <TEX>$\sigma = \hbox{15} \ \hbox{mV}$</TEX>), and <TEX>$f_{T}$</TEX> (233 GHz), mainly due to the extremely low plasma-induced damage in the Schottky gate area. </P>

Beans are well known to be high-protein diets. Bean seeds contain arginine, lysine, or glycine-rich proteins which are effective to maintain lower glucose levels. In this study, the synergistic effect of fermented small soybean (Chounggukjang) and mulberry leaf on metabolism and hexokinase activity was investigated in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. We divided 8 groups as follows: non-diabetic rat group fed with only water diet (NC: control), and STZ-induced diabetic rat groups fed with water (DC), fermented Rhynchosia Nulubilis (Bbc), fermented Glycine max Merr (Ybc), Bbc and YBc (BYbc), mulberry leaf and Bbc (MBbc), mulberry leaf and Ybc (MYbc), or the mulberry leaf, Bbc, and Ybc (MBYbc). Diabetes mellitus was induced in rats by subcutaneous STZ administration (70 mg/kg of body weight). All diet groups were fed with Chounggukjang in a powder form. Three ml of Chounggukjang solution (0.75 mg per gram of body weight) dissolved in distilled water was orally administered to all rat groups after STZ administration except for NC rat group. In groups fed with fermented soybeans, the body weight (increased), food efficiency ratio (FER) (increased), glucose level (decreased) and hexokinase (HK) activity (increased) significantly differed to NC. Among them, particularly in the groups fed with both fermented soybeans and mulberry leaf, kidney weight significantly decreased, whereas HK activity significantly increased compared to DC. These results suggest that Chounggukjang of both fermented soybeans and mulberry leaf is potentially used as an effective functional food to prevent diabetes complications.

Many freshwater snail taxa are difficult to identify using morphological traits due to phenotypic plasticity. However, using of molecular DNA marker in combination with morphological traits can provide a reliable means for discriminating among freshwater snail taxa including cryptic species. To discriminate among Korean freshwater snail taxa and resolve their systematic relationships, wesequenced a fragment of mtDNA cytochrome oxidase I (COI) gene from 82 specimens collected from ten different sites distributed along the Korean peninsula. We identified more than seven freshwater snail taxa including cryptic species in Korea. Whereas traditional shell morphology of freshwater snails offers only weak discriminatory power for recognizing 'good' taxa, DNA sequence data provided positive and reliable identification. In addition, a major Semisulcospira clade was clearly separated from the remaining lineages observed including cryptic species. However, a phylogenetic tree inferred from the COI gene data did not fully resolve systematic relationships among pleurocerid taxa in Korea. Establishing more robust shell characteristics for identifying taxa unambiguously and hence improving traditional key shell morphology characters for freshwater snail species is an urgent requirement and will require more rigorous examination of all nominal taxa. While molecular data generated here will be useful for species identification and for describing the systematic relationships among Korean freshwater snails, further analysis will be required.
