Blocking of Cell Proliferation, Cytokines Production and Genes Expression Following Administration of Cordyceps sinensis in the Bronchoalveolar Lavage Fluids Cells. Proceedings of international Symposium on East-West Medicine, Seoul. 44-64, 1999.-Cordyceps sinensis is a major parasitic fungus on larva of Lepidoptera. It is one of the well know fungi used in traditional Chinese medicine for treatment asthma, lung and kideney diseases. Many fungi belonging to the genus Cordyceps have been demonstrated to produce natural products with various biological activities. Reported biological activities of genus cordyceps include:(a)inhibition of DNA and RNA synthesis;(b)enhancement of cell differentiation;(c)restruction of cytoskeleton;(d)inhibition of protein kinase activity;(e)antitumor activity on bladder, colon, lung carcinoma as well as fibroblastoma;(f)inhibition of the infection and revers transciptase activity of human immunodeficiency virus type 1; and(g) inhibition of methylation of nucleic acid. Thus, it is suggested that the extracts of Cordyceps sp. Contain antitumor, antiviral, and many other biological activities. In our previous studies, we proved that C. sinensis contains the antitumor and immunomodulatory agents. In the present studies, effects of C. sinensis on bronchoalveolar lavage fluids(BAL)cells were demonstrated. The crude methanolic extracts of C. sinensis were fractionated into 15 fractions by silica gel column chromatography. Effects of various fraction on BAL cells proliferation and lipopolysaccharide(LPS) stimulated interleukin-1β(IL-8),platelet activating factor(PAF), interleukin-6(IL-6), tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α),and interleukin-8(IL-8) production on BAL cells were determined. The result indicated that the CS-19-22 fraction suppressed BAL cells proliferation activated by LPS. The median inhibitory concentration(IC50) was 6㎍/ml. The CS-19-22 fraction also decreased IL-1β,PAF,IL-6, TNF-αand IL-8 production.The results of revers transcription-polymerase chain reaction(RT-PCR) demonstrated that the CS-19-22 fraction did not affect IL-1β,PAF,IL-6, TNF-α,and IL-8 mRNAs expression in BAL cells activated by LPS. By contrast, it inhibited the IL-10 mRNA expression but enhanced IFN-γand IL-12 mRNAs expression in activated BAL cells. Moreover, the CS-19-22 fraction blocked PAF-induced platelet aggregation. It is unlikely that cytotoxicity was involved. Because no cell deths were observable. We hypothesize that inhibitory mechanisms of CS-19-22 on BAL cells proliferation may be related to the impairments of gene expression and production of cytokines in BAL cells. The explanation of C. sinensis antiasthma function may involved the following(1)C.sinenesis contained immunomodulatory agents that stimulated IFN-γand IL-12 expression in TH1cells.(2)Enhanced secretion of IFN-γand IL-12 will inhibit the Tγcells immune responses Ex. Decreasing of IL-6 and IL-10 production.(3) The impairments of cytokines production in TH2 cells suppressed th BAL cells proliferation then more cytokines production Ex.IL-1β,PAF,IL-6,TNF-αand IL-8 in activated BAL cells were decreased. (4)The suppression of TH2cells immune responses will inhibit the growth and differentiation of B cells then IgE production will be decreased. (5)Reduced production of IgE will decreased asthma attack occurring in individuals. However, the results of the present study suggested that C. sinensis may also have acted to treat asthma in part by inhibiting BAL cells proliferation and cytokine gene expression and production. Future, experiments with treatment of animals with asthma with C. sinensis will be necessary to defined whether C. sinensis can reduce asthma injury. Plans are underway for the isolation of pure principal growth inhibitors and their mechanisms of action are subjected for further study.

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF-1) is an autosomal dominant disorder. Pseudoaneurysms formation and rupture is an unusual complication of neurofibromatosis. To date, pseudoaneurysm of the internal pudendal artery associated with NF-1 has not been reported. In this article, we present a 62-yr-old man with NF-1 suffering from spontaneous hematoma of the perinea and scrotum. A digital substraction angiography disclosed a ruptured pseudoaneurysm of the right internal pudendal artery, which was successfully managed with transcatheter embolization.

4-Methylsulfinyl-3-butenyl isothiocyanate (MTBITC) found in the radish (Raphanus sativus L.), is a wellknown anticancer agent. In this study, the mechanisms of the MTBITC induction of cell apoptosis in human A549 lung cancer cells were investigated. Our PI staining results showed that MTBITC treatment significantly increased the apoptotic sub-G1 fraction in a dose-dependent manner. The mechanism of apoptosis induced by MTBITC was investigated by testing the change of mitochondrial membrane potential (${\Delta}{\Psi}m$), the expression of mRNAs of apoptosis-related genes by RT-PCR, and the activities of caspase-3 and -9 by caspase colorimetric assay. MTBITC treatment decreased mitochondrial membrane potential by down-regulating the rate of Bcl-2/Bax and Bcl-xL/Bax, and activation of caspase-3 and -9. Therefore, mitochondrial pathway and Bcl-2 gene family could be involved in the mechanisms of A549 cell apoptosis induced by MTBITC.
Drilling Temperature and Hole Quality in Drilling of CFRP/Aluminum Stacks Using Diamond Coated Drill

Composite/metal stack materials, most often consisting of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites and aluminum or titanium alloy (Al or Ti), have been widely used in the aviation industry. It is still a challenge to make holes on the composite/metal stack materials with high quality. This paper aims to investigate the influence of drilling parameters on the drilling of stack materials consisting of T800/X850 CFRP and 7075-T651 Al with regard to drilling force, drilling temperature, hole diameter and hole surface quality. Diamond coated drill bits with double point angles were employed in the drilling tests. The drilling temperature was measured utilizing a rotational motion temperature measuring system. It is indicated that maximum drilling temperature increases with the increase of spindle speed, while, it decreases with increasing feed rate. The thrust force and drilling temperature increase abnormally during drilling of the Al layer, which can be attributed to the evacuation difficulty of the long and flexible Al chips. It is found that sudden drops in the surface profile of CFRP are caused by the cavities owning to the resin degradation effects. The influences of different stack sequences on the drilling temperature and hole surface quality have also been discussed.

It is essential to evaluate the blasting-enhanced permeability (BEP) feasibility of a low-permeability sandstone-type uranium deposit. In this work, the mineral composition, reservoir physical properties and rock mechanical properties of samples from sandstone-type uranium deposits were first measured. Then, the reformability evaluation method was established by the analytic hierarchy process-entropy weight method (AHP-EWM) and the fuzzy mathematics method. Finally, evaluation results were verified by the split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) experiment and permeability test. Results show that medium sandstone, argillaceous sandstone and siltstone exhibit excellent reformability, followed by coarse sandstone and fine sandstone, while the reformability of sandy mudstone is poor and is not able to accept BEP reservoir stimulation. The permeability improvement and the distribution of damage fractures before and after the SHPB experiment confirm the correctness of evaluation results. This research provides a reformability evaluation method for the BEP of the low-permeability sandstone-type uranium deposit, which contributes to the selection of the appropriate regional and stratigraphic horizon of the BEP and the enhanced ISL of the low-permeability sandstone-type uranium deposit.

A noticeably rapid missile force development of the PLA poses a new challenge to those all who benefit from open and free global commons (SLOC, air, and space) in the Pacific Ocean. Washington warily estimates that the PLA`s capabilities going beyond the Cross-Strait contingency aims at constraining America`s power projection capabilities in the West Pacific. Multi-dimensional force buildup, especially precisely guided intermediate and cruise missiles could impose a formidable anti-access and area-denial barrier for the US naval and air power. As a response, the US Pentagon has come up with a new doctrinal breakthrough, namely, AirSea Battle concept. In an effort to offset the numerical and geographical advantage of the PLA, the US has set about integrating its air and sea power components. By generating maximum cross-domain synergy effect, the Pentagon believes that China`s ambition to challenge the freedom of navigation would be discouraged. America`s regional allies as Japan and Korea will benefit from the US resolve to remain committed to the regional balance of power. Regional economies heavily dependent on trade and cross-national investment will continue to prosper as freedom of navigation in the sea and the air is guaranteed. Yet, the dissenters of the new doctrinal concept present various negative evaluation of America`s response to missile capabilities buildup of the PLA. The expensive program is seen to only end up accelerating the dangerous arms race in the West Pacific. Against this backdrop, careful cost-effect analyses as to AirSea battle concept are required to respond to the changing strategic environment surrounding the Korean peninsula, This study has investigated and introduced the assessments underway in Japan, and attempted to present an answer whether and how much the AirSea battle concept can contribute to the security of the ROK in the years to come.

Purpose This study aimed to explore the functions and mechanisms of C-C motif chemokine receptor 6 (CCR6), a gene associated with progression and metastasis of colorectal cancer (CRC), in radiosensitivity of rectal cancer (RC). Materials and Methods RNA sequencing and immunohistochemical analysis on CCR6 expression were performed in pretreatment tissues of RC patients exhibiting different therapeutic effects of radiotherapy. Colonogenic survival assay was conducted in different CRC cell lines to assess their radiosensitivity. And the impact of CCR6 expression on radiosensitivity was validated through RNA interference. The DNA damage repair (DDR) abilities of cell lines with different CCR6 expression were evaluated through immunofluorescence-based H2AX quantification. Results The CCR6 mRNA level was higher in patients without pathologic complete remission (pCR) than in those with pCR (fold changed, 2.11; p=0.004). High-level expression of CCR6 protein was more common in the bad responders than in the good responders (76.3% vs. 37.5%, p < 0.001). The CRC cell lines with higher CCR6 expression (LoVo and sw480) appeared to be more radioresistant, compared with the sw620 cell line which had lower CCR6 expression. CCR6 knockdown made the LoVo cells more sensitive to ionizing radiation (sensitization enhancement ratio, 1.738; p < 0.001), and decreased their DDR efficiency. Conclusion CCR6 might affect the RC radiosensitivity through DDR process. These findings supported CCR6 as a predicting biomarker of radiosensitivity and a potential target of radiosensitization for RC patients.

Crohn`s disease (CD) is a disease with chronic inflammation of unknown etiology involving any part of the gastrointestinal tract. The incidence and prevalence of CD are increasing recently in Asia. Half of the CD patients will have intestinal complica-tions, such as strictures or fistulas, within 20 years after diagnosis. Twenty-five percentage of CD patients have had at least one small bowel stricture and 10% have had at least one colonic stricture and lead to significant complications. Most of these pa-tients will require at least one surgery during their lifetime. Early diagnosis and evaluation with adequate managements for the patients can prevent disability and mortality of these patient. Here, we reviewed the current incidence of CD with stricture, the etiology of stricture, and how to diagnose and manage the stricture. (Intest Res 2015;13:19-26)
Study on Adsorption Desulfurization of Biogas Using Iron Oxide Particles

The contained hydrogen sulfide in biogas leads to corrosion of metal equipment. In addition, the high concentration of hydrogen sulfide can also hurt the health of humans and animals. As to be a renewable energy with both environmental protection and safety, biogas must be removed and purified before being used. In this study, a solid-state desulfurization device was designed. The biogas flow through the bottom of the transparent desulfurization column which is made of acrylic glass, the iron oxide particles were placed in the desulfurization column as desulfurizer, change the biogas flow and the height of iron oxide particles in the desulfurization column to experiment on desulfurization, measure the concentration of hydrogen sulfide adsorbed by the iron oxide particles at the above of the desulfurization column, then discuss the change of the hydrogen sulfide removed rate in biogas with the experimental period. The experimental result shows that the removed rate of hydrogen sulfide decreases with the increase of biogas flow, and it also increases with the iron oxide particle height in the desulfurization column, the longer stagnation inside the desulphurization column, will cause the better removed efficiency of hydrogen sulfide. In addition, the removed efficiency of hydrogen sulfide gradually decreases with the increase of the desulfurization period. The average desulfurization efficiency was 95.16% at biogas flow of 25 ℓ / min, iron oxide particle height of 15.3 cm and desulfurization period is 70 minutes.
