      • Impacts and Countermeasures of Climate Change on Food Supply

        Kim Chang-gil,Jeong Hak-kyun,Han Suk-ho,Kim Jeong-seung,Moon Dong-hyun 한국농촌경제연구원 2013 한국농촌경제연구원 기본연구보고서 Vol.- No.-

Climate change has become a megatrend that will lead to significant changes in future society. Korean and overseas agencies specializing in climate forecasts predict that average global temperatures will continue to rise. While climate change may potentially have certain positive impacts for crop yields, the overall impact is predicted to be negative for environment and food security. In this context, our study aims to suggest a plan for systematically establishing a stable food supply system in Korea in respose to climate change. Various analytical models were employed, including: a response analysis based on questionnaire for farmers, panel-based analysis of the causes of pests and diseases in rice production, a random-effects model for panel data of extreme weather impact, and an analysis of food supply effects using the Simulation Model for Climate-Agriculture Relations (SIMCAR) integrated model in conjunction with the Crop Estimation through Resource and Environment Synthesis (CERES) model of the Korea Agricultural Simulation Model (KASMO). An analysis was made of major grain yields by means of the KREI-KASMO. This revealed reduced yields and area in comparison with the baseline in 2050, resulting in a reduction of rice production by 17.8%p in the RCP8.5 scenario, and reduction of soybean by 21.2%p and reduction of barley by 13.7%p in the A2 scenario. Self-sufficiency ratio of major grains in 2050 drawn from the SIMCAR revealed that the climate change scenario for rice showed 55.0% to be reduced by 18.3% in comparison with the baseline. It is predicted that selfsufficiency ratio in rice will drop to 50% which means a half of consumed rice should be imported. Key tasks for building a stable food supply system to cope with climate change were developed based on the domestic production capacity, the buffering capacity to climate change, import capacity from other countries, and policy performance capacity with reference to the empirical analysis. First, the suggested key tasks for improving the domestic production capacity include developing and disseminating adaptation technology, conserving farmland and expanding arable land, practicing climate-smart agriculture by using fusion technology, and modernizing infrastructure for agriculture. Second, key tasks for improving buffering capacity to climate change are improving resilience and biodiversity, building a risk management system, and further improving storage of food in Korea and other countries. Third, major tasks for improving the import capacity from other countries are constructing overseas food bases, effectively using the international grain market, and enhancing international cooperation with relevant countries. Finally, key tasks for improving policy performance capacity are refining and applying the climate change impact analysis model with respect to policies, expanding investments in research and development, building a vulnerability assessment system, enhancing education and training, and installing Climate Change Response Center for Agriculture (tentative). In this study, several key challenges were presented in the four different areas related to building a stable food supply system which can help overcome the challenges of climate change. It is expected that the nature of the policies that need to be prioritized and promoted, given the constraints of budget, organization and information will be addressed in future research. Also, in order for the solutions for key challenges to work properly in the field such that policy outcomes will be maximized, a consortium of research bodies in the related fields of agriculture, agricultural meteorology and agricultural economics should be created. As preparation for specific action programs. Furthermore, follow-up studies should be conducted to verify the expenses required for developing reliable climate change impact assessment models and the effectiveness of the enforced policies. Background: Nail can be affected by trauma, infection, and systematic disorders. In particular, the toe nails are exposed to the repeated and cumulative minor traumas, which usually result in thickened, splitted, and discolorated nails. Considering these, it can be inferred that the long second toe can be related to various nail and skin changes by repeated minor traumas such as friction in shoes, but the study or report on this topic hasn’t been done yet. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to introduce various nail and skin changes on long second toe. Methods: We analyzed the kinds of nail/skin changes of 50 patients with long second toe, enrolled at Pusan National University Hospitals (Busan and Yangsan) from 2013 to 2018. Results: There was no significant difference in the incidence of left and right toe and toenail, and 7 (14%) patients presented bilateral distribution. The most common nail change on long second toe was melanonychia (23, 46%), followed by subungual hematoma (15, 30%), onycholysis (2, 4%), subungual hyperkeratosis (2, 4%), onychomadesis (1, 2%), and retronychia (1, 2%). The most common skin change was corn (9, 18%), followed by paronychia (2, 4%). Twenty (20/50, 40%) patients also had other toe or toenail changes. Among them, the most common site was big toe/nail (13, 62%), and the most common change was subungual hematoma (8, 42%). Conclusion: Through this study, the dermatologists can recognize and diagnose the nail and skin changes of long second toe.

        ( Jisang Yun ),( Kyung-nam Bae ),( Jin-hwa Son ),( Hoon-soo Kim ),( Hyun-chang Ko ),( Byungsoo Kim ),( Moon-bum Kim ),( Kihyuk Shin ) 대한피부과학회 2021 대한피부과학회 학술발표대회집 Vol.73 No.1

Background: Epidermal cysts (EC) are the most common tumors found on the skin and accompanying inflammation is also frequent. However, the predictors for inflammatory change have not been investigated yet. Objectives: This study was performed to investigate the difference between inflamed and uninflamed epidermal cysts, and to assess associated factors for inflammatory change. Methods: We analyzed the biopsy-proven 1723 epidermal cysts (515 inflamed and 1208 uninflamed) at two tertiary hospitals from 2011 to 2021. Results: The proportion of inflamed epidermal cysts (IEC) and uninflamed epidermal cyst (UIEC) were 29.9 % and 70.1 %, respectively. Inflammatory change was less frequently observed on the face (25.5 %) than the other sites (32.1 %) (p=0.0046). The anatomic location with the highest rate of inflammatory change was back (40.8 %, p=0.0004). Mean duration of inflammatory change from UIEC to IEC on the face was shorter than the other sites (12.5 months vs 17.9 months, respectively, p= 0.0473). On ultrasonography, long axis of IEC (20.7mm) was generally longer than that of UIEC (15.7mm) (p=0.0218). Moreover, Inflammatory change was more frequent on the EC with punctum compared to those without punctum (35.3 % vs 30.3 %, P=0.0471). Conclusion: Based on the location, size and presence of punctum, decision on the optimal treatment strategies can be established when encountering patients with EC.

Hematologic and hemodynamic findings during hemodialysis in 13 beagle dogs

Chang-Moo Ji, Hae-Won Jung, Hyo-Mi Jang, Jong-Hyun Moon, Dong-In Jung 2014 Journal of Biomedical and Translational Research Vol.15 No.2

Hemodialysis is an effective therapy for renal failure in veterinary practice. To evaluate hematologic and hemodynamic changes during hemodialysis, 13 dogs were treated with hemodialysis, after which complete blood cell counts (CBC), serum chemistry, and mean systolic blood pressure were analyzed. For CBC, white blood cells (WBC) and platelets underwent significant changes. In serum chemistry, there were significant differences in blood urea nitrogen (BUN), creatinine, total protein, albumin, globulin, amylase, calcium, potassium, and phosphorus contents. Further, mean systolic blood pressure suddenly increased in early hemodialysis and decreased significantly thereafter. During hemodialysis, adverse effects were observed in some dogs as follows: bleeding (1 dog), anemia (2 dogs), leukopenia (8 dogs), thrombocytopenia (2 dogs), and hypotension (1 dog). This study demonstrates hematologic and hemodynamic effects during hemodialysis as well as complications similar to human medicine. Before applying the commercialized human hemodialysis system to canine renal failure patients, we monitored hematologic and hemodynamic findings during hemodialysis in healthy beagle dogs.

      • Overlapping and unique toxic effects of three alternative antifouling biocides (Diuron, Irgarol 1051®, Sea-Nine 211®) on non-target marine fish

        Moon, Young-Sun,Kim, Moonkoo,Hong, Chang Pyo,Kang, Jung-Hoon,Jung, Jee-Hyun Elsevier 2019 Ecotoxicology and environmental safety Vol.180 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>The use of alternative biocides has increased due to their economic and ecological relevance. Although data regarding the toxicity of commercial alternative biocides in marine organisms are accumulating, little is known about their toxic pathways or mechanisms. To compare the toxic effects of commercial alternative biocides on non-target pelagic fish (flounder) embryos, we investigated the adverse effects of developmental malformation and transcriptional changes. Three biocides including Diuron, Irgarol 1051® and Sea-Nine 211® produced a largely overlapping suite of developmental malformations, including tail-fin fold defects and dorsal body axis curvature. In our test, the potencies of these biocides were ranked in the following order with respect to malformation and mortalities: Sea-Nine 211® > Irgarol 1051® > Diuron. Consistent with the toxicity rankings, the expression of genes related to heart formation was greater in embryonic flounder exposed to Sea-Nine 211® than in those exposed to Irgarol 1051® or Diuron, while expression of genes related to fin malformation was greater in the Irgarol 1051® exposure group. In analyses of differential gene expression (DEG) profiles (fold change of genes with a cutoff <I>P < 0.05</I>) by high-throughput sequencing (RNA-seq), genes associated with nervous system development, transmembrane transport activity, and muscle cell development were significantly changed commonly. Embryos exposed to Diuron showed changes related to cellular protein localization, whereas genes associated with immune system processes were up-regulated significantly in embryos exposed to Irgarol 1051®. Genes related to actin filament organization and embryonic morphogenesis were up-regulated in embryos exposed to Sea-Nine 211®. Overall, our study provides a better understanding of the overlapping and unique developmental toxic effects of three commercial booster biocides through transcriptomic analyses in a non-target species, embryonic flounder.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Developmental defects of the most commercially used booster biocides were investigated on non-target marine species. </LI> <LI> Sea-Nine 211® was most developmental toxic biocides among three biocides regarding malformation and mortalities analysis. </LI> <LI> Three biocides were produced common toxic effects associated with nervous system development. </LI> <LI> Genes related to immune system processes were variated in embryos exposed to Irgarol 1051®. </LI> <LI> Genes related to embryonic morphogenesis were up-regulated in embryos exposed to Sea-Nine 211. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

Vol.36 No.6

Background : Broad-spectrum antibiotic therapy has been recommended as an empirical regimen in cancer patients with febrile neutropenia. Cefepime is a fourth generation cephalosporin with good activity against both gram-positive cocci and gram-negative bacilli. Materials and Methods : To compare the efficacy and safety of cefepime alone with ceftazidime plus tobramycin as empirical regimen for adult cancer patients with febrile neutropenia, a randomized, open label, comparative trial was performed. If the patient showed clinical improvent 72 hours, antibiotic could be changed to oral ciprofloxacin. Clinical and microbiological responses were determined at 72 hours and at the end of therapy. To investigate the antimicrobial resistance of viridans streptococci, swab cultures were obtained from throat in all enrolled patients and antimicrobial susceptibility tests were performed by using microdilution method according to the NCCLS. Results : A total of 89 patients were enrolled. Forty-eight patients received cefepime alone (CA), and 41 patients received ceftazidime plus tobramycin (CT). Demographic and baseline clinical characteristics were similar in both groups (P>0.05). The initial clinical success rate at day 2-4 in group CA (91.7%) was similar with that in CT group (85.4%) (P=0.31). At the end of therapy, the final clinical success rate in CA group (91.7%) was similar to that in CT group (100%) (P=0.15). In 18 patients, with microbiologically defined infections, the eradication rate was 100% in both groups. Adverse events including liver dysfunction (21.3%) and renal dysfunction (2.2%), were similar in both groups (P=0.87). Viridans streptococci were isolated from the throat cultures in 25 cases, and all of these strains were susceptible to penicillin (MIC_(90) 0.12 ㎍/mL), cefepime (1 ㎍/mL), and vancomycin (0.12 ㎍/mL). Conclusion : Efficacy and safety of cefepime monotherapy was comparable to the combination of ceftazidime and tobramycin. It could be used as an alternative empirical regimen for treating cancer patients with febrile neutropenia.

Study on the Fire Hazard and Risk Analysis Derived from the Plant Configuration Change During the Shutdown Period at Nuclear Power Plants

        Jee Moon-Hak,Hong Sung-Yull,Sung Chang-Kyung,Jung Hyun-Jong Korean Nuclear Society 2003 Nuclear Engineering and Technology Vol.35 No.6

Fire hazard and risk analysis at Nuclear Power Plants is implemented on the basis of the normal operational configuration. This steady configuration, however, can be changed due to the temporary displacement of equipment, electric cable and irregular movement of workers through the fire compartments when the on-line maintenance is processed during the power operation mode or the scheduled outage mode for the refueling. With the consequence of this configuration change, the fire analysis condition and the evaluation result will be different from those that were analyzed based on the steady configuration. In this context, at this paper, the general items for the reassessment are categorized when the configuration has changed. The contemporary zone models for the detail fire analysis are also illustrated for their application for each classified condition.

      • Real-Time External Compensation of Threshold Voltage Shift Using Double-Gate Oxide TFTs in a Gate Driving System

        You, Bong-Hyun,Lee, Soo-Yeon,Hong, Seok-Ha,Lee, Jae-Hoon,Kim, Hyun-Chang,Ju, Ha-Ram,Choi, Moon-Chul,Jeong, Deog-Kyoon IEEE 2016 Journal of display technology Vol.12 No.9

<P>In order to suppress the malfunction caused by the shift of the threshold voltage (V-TH) of oxide thin film transistors (TFTs) to a negative value, double-gate TFTs are used in the shift register of the gate driving system to control V-TH by adjusting the top gate bias. The proposed circuit detects the current consumption of the shift register and adjusts V-TH so that the current consumption of the shift register is regulated within the desired value. The system includes a compensation algorithm, which can search for an optimized top gate bias in various circumstances such as process fluctuations and ambient temperature change. The proposed system provides a stable operation compared with a conventional structure especially at high temperature. Experimental results show that, in the conventional system without compensation, the output voltage of the shift register deteriorates at 80 degrees C and above, and the power consumption increases from 1.15 to 2.14 mW after 21600 s of continuous operation at 60 degrees C. On the other hand, the proposed system provides a stable gate output up to 100 degrees C and keeps the power consumption below 1.10 mW by adjusting the top gate bias responding to environment changes.</P>

        장은하(Eun Ha Chang),문유경(You Kyung Moon),조혜승(Hye Seung Cho),김정수(Jung Soo Kim),김지현(Ji Hyun Kim) 한국여성정책연구원(구 한국여성개발원) 2018 여성연구 Vol.98 No.3

This research explores the status and future tasks of national implementation of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 5 in South Korea by especially focusing on indicators. Among its 17 goals and 169 targets, SDGs sets forth gender equality and empowerment of women and girls as a stand-alone goal 5, and gender issues are also cross cut in other goals as well. The independent as well as cross cutting nature of gender related issues imply the quintessential nature of gender in attaining the overall SDG targets. In particular, SDG goal 5, unlike Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), pursues transformative changes in achieving gender equality with a number of indicators urging structural changes. Given this context, this paper examines the meaning and the availability of national data corresponding to SDG 5’global indicators, and provides implications for South Korea’s establishment of SDG 5 indicators for national implementation. As a theoretical background, we first outline the process of setting up the indicators of SDGs with particular focus of Goal 5, and then we introduce the governance system for SDGs implementation in South Korea and analyze the existing literature for this study. For methods, this study employs document reviews. We created an analytical matrix, using two pillars ; indicators’ definitions and availability of national data. Based on this matrix, this research categories each indicators into four groups. As results, this study reveals that several indicators require operational definition for domestic implementation and development of gender-sensitive domestic data for future implementation in South Korea. In conclusion, we present practical implications for future implementation of SDG goal 5 and its indicators in South Korea. The results of this study can be used as basic research for establishing national indicators for the implementation of gender-related SDG targets in South Korea, and ultimately to achieve the goal of gender equity in SDGs.
