<P>The study of tumor biomarkers was gradually facilitated by the adoption of proteomic strategies due to less invasiveness and higher sensitivity. Colorectal cancer is one of the most commonly occurring cancers worldwide and its incidence has markedly increased in Korea. While the adoption of proteomic strategies facilitated the study of tumor biomarkers, to date, no common agreement has been derived from proteomic investigations regarding tumor markers of colorectal cancer. This study was designed to find molecules differentially expressed in colorectal cancer compared to non-tumor mucosa. Four colorectal adenocarcinoma and corresponding non-tumor tissue samples were analyzed to find previously unknown proteins via two-dimensional electrophoresis and MALDI-TOF/MS spectrometry. Western blot assays and tissue microarray (TMA) immunohistochemistry were performed to validate the identified proteins. Among the twelve up-regulated and one down-regulated proteins identified, moesin, cytokeratin (KRT) 17 and carbonic anhydrase??I were validated by western blot analysis and/or immunohistochemistry. On immunohistochemistry, both moesin and KRT17 demonstrated a tendency of increased expression as pT stage advanced. Both moesin and KRT17 were not expressed in normal colorectal epithelium. These two proteins may play a role in cancer invasion and/or metastasis in colorectal carcinoma, and could be candidate biomarkers for the diagnosis and prognosis of colorectal cancer.</P>

<P>Frost formation can cause operational difficulty and efficiency loss for many facilities such as aircraft, wind turbines, and outdoor heat exchangers. Self-propelled jumping by condensate droplets on superhydrophobic surfaces delays frost formation, so many attempts have been made to exploit this phenomenon. However, practical application of this phenomenon is currently unfeasible because many processes to fabricate the superhydrophobic surfaces are inefficient and because self-propelled jumping is difficult to be achieved in a humid and low-temperature environment because superhydrophobicity is degraded in these conditions. Here, we achieved significantly effective anti-icing superhydrophobic aluminum. Its extremely low adhesive properties allow self-propelled jumping under highly supersaturated conditions of high humidity or low surface temperature. As a result, this surface helps retard frost formation at that condition. The aluminum was made superhydrophobic by a simple and cost-effective process that is adaptable to any shape. The effects of Glycyrrhizae Radix (GR) on the metabolism of acetaminophen (AA) were examined in male Sprague-Dawley rats. The methanol extract of GR (500 mg/kg) was administered orally to rats for 6 days. AA and its metabolites excreted in bile, urine and blood within 120 min after dosing of AA (150 mg/kg, i.v.) were assayed by HPLC. Treatment of rats with the methanol extract of GR significantly increased the cumulative biliary excretion of AA-glucuronide (156% of the control) and decreased that of AA-sulfate (63% of the control). The cumulative urinary excretion of AA-glucuronide was also significantly increased to 132% of the control. GR treatment significantly increased total (biliary plus urinary) excretion of AA-glucuronide (172% of the control) without influencing thioether and sulfate conjugates of AA. The results clearly show that GR enhances UDP-glucuronosyl transferase-mediated detoxication of AA, but may not influence sulfotransferase-mediated and cytochrome P-450-mediated metabolites formation.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Surface repellency to high and low surface tension (LST) liquids has a wide range of commercial applications such as non-fouling, self-cleaning and separation of liquids. However, little research has been achieved to control surface repellency to LST liquids due to difficulty of developing re-entrant surface curvatures. Here, we report an effective method to control surface repellency of stainless steel meshes for liquids that have LST. We used electrochemical etching followed by hydrophobic coating where adjusting the voltage and duration of electrochemical etching controllably cover the mesh surfaces with nanoscale re-entrant structures. Variation in re-entrant surface curvatures determines the mesh's sensitivity to liquid-vapor surface tension, and changed the apparent contact angles and sliding angles for LST liquids. The difference in sensitivity of surface tension of mesh was exploited to rapidly separate liquids in binary mixtures of general solvents. The meshes achieve fast separation, and can be reused. This method to provide omniphobicity is compatible with large-scale production.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> We report an effective method for tunable omniphobicity on 304 stainless steel mesh. </LI> <LI> The prepared mesh has mechanically and chemically durable omniphobicity. </LI> <LI> Omniphobicity can be tuned by variation in coverage of re-entrant structures. </LI> <LI> This method can control the mesh's sensitivity to γ<SUB>lv</SUB>, and the CAs for LST liquids. </LI> <LI> Tunable wettability of mesh can separate diverse liquid mixtures. </LI> </UL> </P>
Differentiation of human labia minora dermis-derived fibroblasts into insulin-producing cells

Recent evidence has suggested that human skin fibroblasts may represent a novel source of therapeutic stem cells. In this study, we report a 3-stage method to induce the differentiation of skin fibroblasts into insulin-producing cells (IPCs). In stage 1, we establish the isolation, expansion and characterization of mesenchymal stem cells from human labia minora dermis-derived fibroblasts (hLMDFs) (stage 1: MSC expansion). hLMDFs express the typical mesenchymal stem cell marker proteins and can differentiate into adipocytes, osteoblasts, chondrocytes or muscle cells. In stage 2, DMEM/F12 serum-free medium with ITS mix (insulin, transferrin, and selenite) is used to induce differentiation of hLMDFs into endoderm-like cells, as determined by the expression of the endoderm markers Sox17, Foxa2, and PDX1 (stage 2: mesenchymal-endoderm transition). In stage 3, cells in the mesenchymal-endoderm transition stage are treated with nicotinamide in order to further differentiate into self-assembled, 3-dimensional islet cell-like clusters that express multiple genes related to pancreatic ${\beta}$-cell development and function (stage 3: IPC). We also found that the transplantation of IPCs can normalize blood glucose levels and rescue glucose homeostasis in streptozotocin-induced diabetic mice. These results indicate that hLMDFs have the capacity to differentiate into functionally competent IPCs and represent a potential cell-based treatment for diabetes mellitus.

<P>Acquisition of tamoxifen resistance (TR) during anti-estrogenic therapy using tamoxifen is a major obstacle in the treatment of estrogen receptor (ER)-positive breast cancer. As a biguanide derivative, metformin is commonly used to treat type II diabetes. It has recently emerged as a potential anticancer agent. The objective of the present study was to investigate the anticancer activity of metformin in relation to ERα expression and its signaling pathway in ERα-positive MCF-7 and MDA-MB-361 breast cancer cells as well as TR MCF-7 breast cancer cells. Metformin inhibited both protein and mRNA levels of ERα in the presence or absence of estrogen (E2) in the MCF-7, TR MCF-7 and MDA-MB-361 cells. Metformin repressed E2-inducible estrogen response element (ERE) luciferase activity, protein levels and mRNA levels of E2/ERα-regulated genes [including c-Myc, cyclin D1, progesterone receptor (PR) and pS2] to a greater degree than tamoxifen, resulting in inhibition of cell proliferation of MCF-7, TR MCF-7 and MDA-MB-361 cells. Collectively, our results suggest that one of the anticancer mechanisms of metformin could be attributable to the repression of expression and transcriptional activity of ERα. Metformin may be a good therapeutic agent for treating ERα-positive breast cancer by inhibiting the expression and function of ERα. In addition, metformin may be useful to treat tamoxifen-resistant breast cancer.</P>

A large-scale neutral hydrogen ($H\small{I}$) ring serendipitously found in the Leo I galaxy group is 200 kpc in diameter with $M_{H\small{I}}{\sim}1.67{\times}10^9M_{\odot}$, unique in size in the Local Universe. It is still under debate where this $H\small{I}$ ring originated - whether it has formed out of the gas remaining after the formation of a galaxy group (primordial origin) or been stripped during galaxy-galaxy interactions (tidal origin). We are investigating the optical and $H\small{I}$ gas properties of the dwarf galaxies located within the gas ring in order to probe its formation mechanism. In this work, we present the photometric properties of the dwarfs inside the ring using the CFHT MegaCam $u^{\ast}$, $g^{\prime}$, $r^{\prime}$ and $i^{\prime}$-band data. We discuss the origin of the gas ring based on the stellar age and metal abundance of dwarf galaxies contained within it.
Eccrine porocarcinoma: retrospective study and review of cases reported in Korea

Background: Eccrine porocarcinoma (EPC) is rare malignant cutaneous adnexal tumor. Since 1998, many EPC cases has been reported in Korea. All previous studies were limited to case report and none has comprehensively reviewed multiple cases. Objectives: To clinicopathologically review all EPC cases from our institutions as well as case reports in Korea. Methods: The patients were retrospectively selected from skin biopsy registry from our institutions. Available histopathological slides were re-examined by an experienced dermatopathologist. EPC cases reported in Korea before June 2019 were retrieved by searching PubMed, Google scholar, KoreaMed, and KoMCI. Results: Nine EPC cases from our institutions were included in the study. In addition, we found 27 reports of 28 EPC cases from Korea. In total of 37 EPC cases, there were 19 males (M:F ratio 1.06:1), and the mean age at diagnosis was 65.6 years. The most common site of primary tumor was head and neck (29.7%). Wide excision was the most common (78.4%) treatment method. Metastasis was confirmed in 21.1%. Conclusion: EPC is rarely reported cutaneous carcinoma in Korea. EPC usually affects old age patients with no sexual predilection. Due to possible metastasis, careful diagnosis and appropriate metastasis work up is warranted in EPC.
위탁형 대안학교를 선택한 학교폭력피해 학부모 경험에 관한 현상학적 연구

The purpose of this study was to deal with school violence and to provide the basic data on children’s school adaptation in terms of in-depth understanding of parents’ experiences about their children attending consigned alternative schools after school violence, In order to reach the goals, the interviews were conducted with 6 parents who had their children attending consigned alternative schools. The data were analyzed through Giorgi’s phenomenology. The results show that 9 categories and 28 components were extracted. Parents who have sent school violence victims to a foster alternative school experience psychological trauma due to their child s school violence. Parents send their children to a foster school. The wounds are getting deeper because of the divergent reactions, gaze, and wandering children around. However, there is a positive change in the child by allowing him / her to afford it through a program of a foster alternative school that is more interested in children and offers a variety of experience opportunities. Parents were found to have experience of recovering from psychological trauma caused by their child s school violence. Based on these findings, the pedagogical implications will be provided for parents and children who cannot adapt a school after school violence. In addition, the suggestions for future studies exploring the prevention of school violence will be offered. 본 연구의 목적은 학교폭력피해를 경험한 자녀를 위탁형 대안학교로 보낸 학부모의 경험이 어떠하며, 그 경험의 구조가 무엇인지를 살펴봄으로써 그들의 경험을 심층적으로 이해하는 데 있다. 이를 위해 자녀가 6개월 이상 위탁형 대안학교에 재학 중인 학부모 6명을 대상으로 심층면담을 실시하였으며, 현상학적 연구방법 중 Giorgi의 분석방법을 사용하였다. 분석을 통해 545개의 의미단위를 도출, 156개의 의미단위로 요약하고, 최종 9개의 구성요소와 28개의 하위구성요소를 도출하였다. 분석결과, 학교폭력피해를 경험한 자녀를 위탁형 대안학교로 보낸 학부모의 경험은 위탁 이전, 위탁 중, 앞으로의 삶이라는 시간적 구조 속에서 ‘자녀가 학교폭력의 희생자가 됨,’ ‘학교폭력 사건 후 남은 것은 후회와 상처뿐임,’ ‘지푸라기라도 잡는 심정으로 대안학교를 찾음,’ ‘어쩔 수 없는 선택 후 흔들리는 마음,’ ‘추락하는 자녀의 손을 잡음,’ ‘자녀가 긍정적으로 변화되어 편안해짐,’ ‘마음이 긍정적으로 변화됨,’ ‘자녀의 미래를 걱정함,’ ‘대안학교와 함께 나아가고 싶은 바램이 생김’의 과정으로 해석되었다. 이러한 결과를 바탕으로 본 연구의 의의와 제한점 및 제언이 논의되었다.
