중세 영어의 강변화 CLASS Ⅲ 동사에 관한 연구 : Mainly with the Analysis of Chaucer's Works CHAUCER 작품의 분석을 중심으로

황순태 신한영미어문학회 1995 새한영어영문학 Vol.33 No.-

The purpose of this paper is to test two hypotheses : the first is that many Strong Verbs in Middle English did not lose their inflections, the second is that if a high percentage of Strong Verbes Survived in Middle English then the duration of Middle English (1150-1500) which Baugh asserted must be restudied. Fries said that 62% of the strong Verbs of Old English remained in the beginning of Modern English. Then it is possible to say that many Strong Verbs of Old English lost their inflections around the 15th century. The results of the writer's investigation are as follows : Among the forty-three Strong Verbs of Class Ⅲ in Old English, which Chaucer used, all the verbs had the inflections of the Strong Verb forms in Middle English. This study of the writer indicates that the rate of strong Verbs of Old English survived in Chaucer's works is 100%. This study has provea the first hypothesis of the writer. There is a significant difference between the research of」Fries'(62%) and that of the writer's (100%). We can say that none of Strong Verbs of Old English lost their inflections from 1150 to 1400, which was the year of Chaucer's death, but 38% of Strong Verbs of Old English lost their inflections from 1400 to 1500. This means that the big loss of verb inflections happened in the 15th century. Then it is unreasonable to assert that the Middle English period ranges from 1150 to 1500. The writer asserts that the V period ends in 1400 by the death of Chaucer and the 15th century is the beginning hour of Modern English which is under the influence of Renaissance. This assertion proves the second hypothesis of the writer satisfactorily.

Fries said that 62% of the Strong Verbs of Old English remained in the beginning of Modern English. Then it is possible to say that many Strong Verbs of Old English lost their inflections around the 15th century. The data of the writer's study are obtained by the researches and analyses of 31 Strong Verbs of Class Ⅱ in The Complets Works of Geoffrey Chaucer deited by W.W.Skeat. The results of the writer's investigation are as follows : The final consonant -n of Strong Verbs survived at the rate of 38% and the semi-final vowels -a-, -o-, -u- were levelled to e [??] sustaining their spellings at the rate of 60% in Middle English and the others are 2%. Among the thirty-one Strong Verbs of Class ll in Old English, which Chaucer used, the twenty-five verbs had the inflections of the Strong Verb forms in Middle English. This study of the writer indicates that the rate of Strong Verb of Old English survived in Chaucer's works is 80.7%. This study has proved the first hypothesis of the writer. There is a significant difference between the research of Fries'(62%) and that of the writer's (80.7%). We can say that only 19.3% of Strong Verbs of Old English lost their inflections from 1150 to 1400, which was the year of Chaucer's death, but 18.7% of Strong Verbs of Old English lost their inflections from 1400 to 1500, which was the beginnig hour of Modern English. • 15세기 영어의 강변화 ClassⅢ 동사에 관한 연구

        황순태 새한영어영문학회 2002 새한영어영문학 Vol.44 No.2

The writer has two hypotheses in this paper : the first is that many verbs of ClassⅢ could not survive their Strong Verb inflections in the 15th century and the second is that if a high percentage of Strong Verbs of ClassⅢ did not survive in the 15th century, then the duration of Middle English (1150-1500) which Baugh asserted must be converted. According to the writer's study, the Strong Verbs (ClassⅢ only) survived 94.6% of their inflections in the 14th Century. But this study of the writer indicates that the rate of Strong Verbs (ClassⅢ only) of Old English survived in the works of 15th century is only 40.4%. This study proves the hypotheses of the writer. The writer can say that only 5.4% of Strong Verbs(ClassⅢ only) of Old English lost their inflections completely from 1150 to 1400, which was the year of Chaucer's death, but 54.2% of Strong Verbs of Old English(ClassⅢ only) lost their inflections partially or completely from 1400 to 1500. This means that the big loss of verb inflections(ClassⅢ only) began in the 15th century. Then it is unreasonable to assert that Middle English period ranges from 1150 to 1500. The writer must assert that Middle English period should end in 1400 by the death of Chaucer and the 15th century must be the beginning hours of Modern English.
