Vol.63 No.1

This essay aims at probing into the three issues in A. R. Gurney’s Overtime to dramatize a desirable modern American multicultural society. The play can be viewed as a parable on American multicultural society in that the locale of the play, i.e. Venice, is compared to American metropolis and that each character, except Salerio, is endowed with American racial and ethnic identity. The first issue is on the stereotypes and the prejudices. Gurney reveals that American citizens cannot completely escape from the stereotypes and the prejudices but that they can be overcome by listener’s pointing out or refuting them and speaker’s making ceaseless efforts to correct them. The second issue is on African Americans’ hatred and antipathy against Jewish Americans. Gurney evinces that the conflicts between the two groups can be conquered by respecting the differences of each group and sharing their mutual concerns as American citizens. The third issue is on WASPs’ influence on their multicultural community. Gurney reveals that WASPs can exert their influence as integrators in solidarity with an influential minority group—Jewish Americans. In conclusion, Gurney‘s position on multiculturalism is that of emphasizing unity more while respecting diversity.

Vol.2021 No.10

배출계수 산정은 연료연소 기반 탄소수지법(carbon balance)을 이용하였으며, 관측장비 및 관측항목은 HR-ToF-AMS (PM1.0 내 화학조성), SMPS (입자수농도), Aethalometer (블랙카본), Dusttrak (PM10, PM2.5 농도), SIFT-MS (VOCs), CRDS (CO₂, CH₄,), AQMS (NO, NO₂, SO₂, O₃, CO)이다.

Vol.16 No.3

This paper is to explore how Arthur Kopit bitterly criticizesmelodrama nd the melodramatized American history in hisIndians.Acording to Kopit, the American history has ben fabricated anddistorted by the American white males. Furthermore, the American whitemales’ historical view is closely related to the characteristics ofmelodrama. InIndians, Kopit mocks and rejects the melodramaticcharacteristics by adopting anachronistic structure and anti-realistictechniques, presenting the protagonist far from the melodramaticcharacterization and using play-within-the-play.The structure ofIndians is composed of the anachronistically arranged13 Scenes except he last 4 scenes. The purpose of this tructure is tocreate a sense of disorientation in the audience and rethink about heVietnam War in the context of American history. Also, Kopit frely usesthe anti-realistic techniques, such as epic theater techniques, surealism, theatricalism and expressionism to prevent he audience from beingimersed in dramatic fantasy. The protagonist, William Cody, becomes Bufalo Bill by ‘the magicpen’ of Ned Buntline and establishes his image as a national hero in hisWild West Show. However, he proves himself as a man of split identity, thus far from the melodramatic hero. The Scouts of the Plains, a melodrama nd a play-within-the-play of251 아서 코핏의 Indians: 멜 로 드 라 마 화 된 미 국 역 사 다 시 쓰 기

Vol.61 No.1

This essay aims at probing into Kim Hines’ position on the issue of the uniqueness of the Holocaust through the analysis of the contrapuntal structure and the songs-within-the-play in Home on the Mornin’ Train. As for the contrapuntal structure, the play dramatizes two separate escape stories, especially the underground movement in Europe in 1939 and the Underground Railroad in America in 1839 in each scene. As for the songs-within-the play, 6 songs reinforce the theme of the play, that is escape from the political oppression/ persecution to freedom. Besides, some lines of Baruch and Karl reveal the universality of the Holocaust. Some similarities between the two stories are that American slavery and European Nazi ideology were based on racism, that there were some supporters who tried to save the fugitives, and that nothing could defeat the will to escape from oppression/persecution to freedom. In conclusion, the play dramatizes the underground movement in Europe as an extension of the Underground Railroad.

Vol.14 No.2

This essay aims at proving that Joanna Halpert kraus's The Ice Wolf is an educational play dealing with multiculturalistic issues. The existing criticism on the themes of the play has been focused on prejudice(Ivy Lynn Hua), prejudice and revenge(Lowell Swortzell), prejudice, revenge, death, and redemption(Roger L. Bedard). However, it fails to recognize that the play can be viewed as an education play dramatizing not only the evil influences of racism & xenophobia, sexism, and hate crimes but also the solution to them. First of all, the play reveals not only the villagers' racism against Anatou, the protagonist of the play, but also their xenophobia-a branch ideology of racism-against her only because her skin is pale and her hair is blonde in the Eskimo village. Anatou is also the target of sexism because she is a member of the male-preferred society. In addition, both Anatou and the village hunters frequently commit defensive and retaliatory hate crimes against each other after she is transformed into a wolf. Moreover, Kraus presents the solution through Wood God's ruling style that it is desirable to recognize and respect the individual differences and diversities of race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation on condition that all the members keep peaceful unity. Kraus also presents another solution through Anatou's noble death because she redeems herself by eliminating her inner hate and revenge before she saves her former boyfriend, Tarto from getting trapped in the logs. Therefore, Kraus's The Ice Wolf is a useful and instructive educational play not only for the schools where bullying and revenge are frequent but also for the readers/audiences of the countries which are diverse in race, ethnicity, religion, or sexual orientation.
