Photoluminescence Study on Crystalline Silicon Single Quantum Wells

Crystalline silicon (c-Si) single quantum wells with the structure of SiO2/c-Si/SiO2 are fabri- cated by high-temperature thermal oxidation of silicon-on-insulator wafers and are studied by using photoluminescence (PL) measurements at room temperature. Four emission peaks are observed around 1.8, 2.3, 2.7, and 3.0 eV. The PL peak near 2.3 eV shows a clear blueshift, the magnitude of which depends on the thickness of the top SiO2 layer as the thickness of the c-Si layer shrinks to zero. The PL peaks observed from this structure are not related with the quantum con.nement eects; rather, they come from the SiO2 layers or the interface region between the c-Si and the SiO2 layers.f

Heavy metal pollution in agricultural field near the abandoned metal mines is a critical problem in Korea. General remediation technique is to apply chemical amendments and soil covering. However, there is no specific guidelines for conducting soil covering. Therefore, main objective of this research was to determine optimum soil covering technique with microcosm experiment. Three different chemical amendments, lime stone (LS), steel slag (SS), and acid mine drainage sludge (AMDS), were examined and varied soil covering depth, 20, 30, 40cm, was applied to determine optimum remediation technique. Bioavailable heavy metal concentration in soil and total concentration of heavy metals in crop were monitored. Result showed that average heavy metal concentration in varied soil covering depth was ordered as 40 cm (14.5 mg kg-1) < 20 cm (14.6 mg kg-1) < 30 cm (16.0 mg kg-1) and also heavy metal concentration in crop was ordered as 40 cm (100 μg kg-1) < 30 cm (183 μg kg-1) < 20 cm (190 μg kg-1). In terms of chemical amendments, average heavy metal concentration was decreased as AMDS (150 μg kg-1) < SS (151 μg kg-1) < LS (154 μg kg-1). Overall, depth of soil covering should be over 30 cm to minimize bioaccumulation of heavy metals and SS and LS could be applied in heavy metal contaminated soil for remediation purposes.
Occurrence of Veterinary Antibiotics in the Groundwater of Arable Land

Groundwater pollution has been concerned in the agricultural area due to release of fertilizer, pesticide, and veterinary antibiotics (VAs). Especially, emerging contaminants such as VAs can cause adverse effect not only on ecosystem but also on human health. Main objective of this research was to examine groundwater near at the animal feeding operation for evaluating occurrence of VAs. Groundwater sample was collected from five different province and three sulfonamides antibiotics (sulfamethazine: SMZ, sulfathiazole: STZ, sulfamethoxazole: SMX) were measured. Extraction of antibiotics was conducted with solid phase extraction and HPLC/MS/MS was used for quantification. Recovery of three antibiotics was ranged 88-126% and R2 value of external calibration curve was 0.99 for all three compounds. Among 3 VAs, only SMZ was detected at the range of 26.6-40.0 ng L-1. Comparing SMZ concentration between control (no animal feeding operation within 2 km radius) and sampling points (animal feeding operation within 0.5 km radius), no difference was observed. This result might indicated that occurrence of VAs in the groundwater can be originated from compost spread in the agricultural field and released into groundwater after rainfall as a nonpoint source. However, more detailed analysis is required for better understanding of VAs occurrence in the groundwater.

Soil security has been awarded in national wide because of food security. In order to evaluate soil security,soil quality needs to be assessed utilizing various soil properties. The main purpose of this research was todevelop a protocol for soil quality assessment in paddy field and to evaluate correlation between soil qualityand rice production in paddy field. Principle component analysis (PCA) was used to select minimum data set(MDS) and soil pH, cation exchange capacity (CEC), soil organic matter (SOM), and available phosphorus(Av. P2O5) was chosen as MDS. Based on database of soil properties, optimized soil quality model wasdetermined. Average soil quality index in paddy field at the period of 1999 - 2015 was 0.35 - 0.50 and soil pHand SOM were high in soil quality index while CEC and Av. P2O5 were low. Correlation analysis showed ahigh correlation between soil quality index and rice production indicating that developed soil qualityassessment tool in this study is suitable for predicting crop productivity. Overall, soil security can be obtainedby conserving soil quality and soil properties in agricultural field.
음악프로그램이 치매노인의 인지기능과 문제행동에 미치는 효과

Purpose: This study was done to identify the effects of a music program on cognitive function and disturbing behavior in elders with dementia. The program consisted of listening to, percussion accompaniment, and singing along with popular music, and folk and children's songs. Method: The design was a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest study. Participants were 32 elders with dementia (experimental: 17, control: 15). The program took place for fifty minutes, six times a week for four weeks. Cognitive function was assessed using the MMSE-K (Mini Mental State Examination- Korean Version) and disturbing behavior, using a disturbing behavior measurement tool developed by Kang. Descriptive statistics, Chi-square and t-test were used to analyze the data. Results: Scores for cognitive function (orientation, attention and calculation) for the experimentalgroup increased significantly (t=5.616, p=.000) and scores for disturbing behavior (aggressive psychomotor behavior, passive behavior and nonaggressive psychomotor behavior) decreased significantly (t=-3.348, p=.002), especially, decreased. Conclusion: The results indicate that the music program was an effective intervention for cognitive function and disturbing behavior in elderly people with dementia admitted to hospital. Therefore, the music program is recommended for use in clinical practice as a nursing intervention for the patients with dementia.

Total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) is one of the main pollutant in soil environment and oxidation treatmentmethod using hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is common for TPH remediation in soil. The main objective of thisresearch was to monitor change of soil biological properties including soil respiration (SR) and soil enzymeactivity in TPH contaminated soil after oxidation treatment. Laboratory batch experiment was conducted tosimulate field treatment. Five percent of H2O2 was applied to TPH contaminated soil and soil biological propertieswas monitored at 3, 7, and 11 days after H2O2 application. Result showed that reduction efficiency ofTPH was 64.8% after 11 days and SR rate was increased to 58.4% as TPH was reduced to 64.8% after 11 days. However, soil enzyme activity was not significantly increased and even dehydrogenase and urease activitywere decreased to 59.0 and 56.3% after H2O2 application. This result might indicate that certain period isnecessary to recover nutrient cycle in soil after remediation. In addition, long time of monitoring might benecessary to understand microbial activity for nutrient utilization in soil.
