This article examines the cultural characteristics and meanings of the definition and use of the concepts of ‘island(섬, seom)’ and ‘islandness[섬성(섬性), seomsung)]’ by critically examining the characteristics and meanings of ‘island discourses’ related to ‘island’ and ‘islandness’. To this purpose, I would like to seek theoretical and methodological clues and ways to examine the continuity and change of ‘island identity’ in depth, focusing on the concept of island and islandness, and sustainability, and provide philosophical clues for humanistic reflections on the characteristics and use of these concepts. In particular, this article proposes the concept of ‘islandness’ as a concept which encompasses ‘island discourses’ and focuses on the cultural characteristics and meanings of ‘island discourses’. This article also aims to understand the interrelationship between these concepts in the context of islands and seas by interrelating the concept of ‘island’, ‘islandness’, ‘island humanities terrain’, and ‘sustainability’ based on a new definition of the concepts of island and islandness to understand the continuity and change of ‘island identity’. To this end, this article tried to actively utilize the concept of ‘island’ and ‘islandness’. ‘Islandness’ is a term and concept that can usually be translated into ‘islandness’,‘island identity’, and ‘islandness’. These diverse and complex island discourses are, in fact, manipulated and transformed for political, economic, and social purposes because the reality of islandness does not exist. Therefore, it is necessary to pay attention to the process in which island discourses are produced, distributed, and consumed rather than the reality of island discourses. This aspect of islandness is overlooked because island discourses actually hinder the understanding of the phenomenon and perception of islands and seas in connection with land. In this respect, island discourses often result in not properly embodying the characteristics and meanings of islands and seas. In particular, these island discourses are mainly produced, distributed, and consumed in a direction that is not irrelevant to the maximization of political and economic benefits of a centralized state and society centered on land and inland, which paradoxically results in the reality of being alienated from the central governmental and national interest and support, and deprived of its own and independent cultural rights of islanders in islands and seas in contemporary Korean society. Depending on how the concept of islandness is defined, it is intended to reveal that these various and diverse discourses on island and islandness are in fact proceeding in the direction of maximizing the political and economic benefits of the land-centered central government or the state by paying attention to the process of manipulating and transforming various discourses for political, economic, and social purposes, despite the fact that the entity of islandness does not exist or it is fluid and flexible according to changes in the times and spatial conditions of islandness. To this end, this article intends to discuss the existing discourses on island related to ‘islandness’ under the premise that it is essential and urgent to consider what cultural characteristics and meanings are in the context of contemporary Korean society.

This paper aims to understand the interrelationships among local history, urbanism, and ethnic identity in Malaysia with special reference to the cultural characteristics and meanings of the formation and transformation of urban culture in port city, Melaka(Malacca), which is located in the middle area of Malay Peninsula. In this paper, I investigate to the characteristics and meanings of sociocultural system of Melaka city that had been a well-known historic-cultural port city. Melaka as a port city had been the most remarkable characteristics of multicultural society, namely the society that has the many colored cultural factors and is the cultural field that contacts and clashes the other cultures and lots of heterogeneous and multiple cultures within there. In this process, the urban culture of Melaka has been formed and transformed by the inclusion and exclusion to them. The local history, urbanism, and ethnic identity of Melaka have an enormous influence on the formation and transformation of Melaka urban culture. Especially, the cultural uniqueness of local history and the historical features of ethnic identity of Melaka has a special meaning to the formation of Malaysian urban cultural mosaics in Melaka port city as a multicultural society. And it is known that the Melaka urban culture has been changed in terms of the long-time historical processes and experiences of Melaka people. In short, Melaka as a historic-cultural port city, has been a multicultural society that occurs to the encounter and clash of many other cultures, in that sphere. 본 연구는 말레이시아 멀라까의 지역사(local history)와 도시성(urbanism), 그리고 민족정체성(ethnic identity)의 특성이 역사적, 사회문화적 맥락에서 구체적으로 어떠한 영향을 미쳤는가를 고찰하기 위한 것이다. 항구도시로서의 멀라까는 다문화사회로서 이질적이고 다채로운 문화적 요소들의 수용과 배척이라는 과정을 통해 도시성을 형성, 변화시키는 특징을 지니고 있다. 그것은 다양한 문화가 서로 충돌하는 현장일 뿐 아니라 그러한 과정을 중재하는 문화적 중개자로서의 역할을 수행하는 경제적, 문화적 장소이기도 하다. 이런 점에서 멀라까의 도시공간은 말레이시아 도시사회의 독특하면서도 고유한 문화적 의미가 만들어지고, 조작되며, 변형되는 역사적, 문화적 구성물이라고 할 수 있다. 이 논문은 기본적으로 멀라까라는 항구도시의 공간과 사회문화적 체계에 대한 연구이다. 멀라까의 역사적 과정 속에서 항구도시의 시공간 체계가 현대성과 도시성을 획득하는 과정에서 어떻게 형성, 변화되었으며 그것이 각각 내부의 각 민족집단의 문화적 정체성을 어떻게 재편하였는가를 기술, 분석함으로써 멀라까의 지역사와 도시성, 그리고 민족정체성 사이에 어떠한 관계가 설정될 수 있는지를 고찰하였다. 이는 멀라까의 도시문화의 형성과 변화 과정을 다각도로 이해하기 위해 역사적 접근방식을 활용하여 식민도시의 특성과 구조를 지닌 멀라까의 도시화 과정 및 그에 대한 주민들의 반응을 체계적으로 기술하기 위함이었다. 이를 통해 멀라까 도시문화의 형성과 변화에 영향을 미친 다양한 요인을 고려하게 되면 도시문화가 단일한 하나의 문화로 구성되어 있는 것이 아니라 다양하고 복합적인 요인들의 역사적 구성물임을 이해할 수 있었다. 나아가 도시 내의 민족정체성이 시대적 상황과 문화적 환경에 따라 끊임없이 변화하는 유동적인 것이라는 사실도 확인할 수 있었다. 한마디로, 멀라까는 이질적이고 다채로운 문화 또는 문화적 요소의 수용과 배척이 일어나는 다문화사회인 것이다.

‘거무X하다’형 색채형용사에서의 ‘X’의 분석 -'거무칙칙하다'류 단어를 중심으로-

This paper analyzed 'X' in the '거무X하다' type of Korean Color Adjectives such as '거무께하다, 거무스레하다, 거무끄름하다, 거무데데하다, 거무칙칙하다' and explained how to form the words. There have been many previous studies analyzing of 'X' in the words only as root derivational suffixes when 'X' is a syllable repeat, such as '데데, 칙칙,' but in some studies have analyzed 'X' a root. We analyzed ‘X’ in '거무X하다' type words from the perspective that the syllable-repeated 'X' is not a root derivational suffixe, but is rather a root. The reason for this is that 1) the word 'X-하다' exists, such as '데데하다, 칙칙하다' and the 'X' is analyzed as roots, 2) the meaning of ‘X’ is transparently reflected in the dictionary meaning of '거무X하다' type words. Therefore, '거무칙칙하다' is analyzed as a compound word of '검다' and '칙칙하다'. However, the reason why the word type was decided to be '거무칙칙하다' rather than '*검칙칙하다' was because 1) in the vocabulary of Korean color adjectives, there are far more the words composed by the four-syllable complex roots and '-하다'(such as '거무스름하다, 푸르스레하다') than the other type words, 2) the '거무X하다' type words are a big part of the black color adjectives. Therefore, the tendency to match the word form is strong. Meanwhile, with the analysis of '거무칙칙하다' as a compound word, I proposed that the dictionary definition of '거무칙칙하다' should also be changed to ''거무스름하면서 칙칙하다.'' which''검다'' modifies ''칙칙하다.'' Therefore, this information should need to be reflected in the Korean dictionary and the explanation that '거무칙칙하다' is derived from '거무칙칙' should be omitted. 이 글에서는 ‘거무께하다, 거무스레하다, 거무끄름하다, 거무데데하다, 거무칙칙하다’ 등과 같은 ‘거무X하다’형 색채형용사에서 ‘X’를 분석하고 단어 형성 방법을 설명했다. 이전 연구들에서는 ‘거무X하다’형 단어에서 ‘X’가 ‘데데, 칙칙’과 같이 1음절 반복형일 때 이것을 어근파생접미사로만 분석한 것이 많았으나, 일부 연구에서는 이 ‘X’를 어근으로 분석한 것들도 있었다. 우리는 1음절 반복형 ‘X’는 어근파생접미사가 아니라 어근이라는 입장에서 ‘거무X하다’형 단어들을 분석하였다. 그 근거로는 1) ‘데데하다, 칙칙하다’와 같이 ‘X하다’형의 단어가 존재하며 이때 ‘X’가 어근으로 분석되고, 2) ‘거무X하다’의 사전 뜻풀이에서 1음절 반복형 어근 ‘X’의 의미가 투명하게 반영된다는 점을 들었다. 따라서 ‘거무칙칙하다’는 ‘검다’와 ‘칙칙하다’가 합성된 단어로 분석된다. 그런데 그 단어형이 ‘*검칙칙하다’가 아니라 ‘거무칙칙하다’로 결정된 이유는 1) 색채형용사 어휘장에서는 ‘거무스름하다, 푸르스레하다’ 등과 같이 4음절 복합어근과 ‘-하다’로 결합된 단어가 월등히 많고, 2) ‘검다’ 계열 색채형용사에서 ‘거무X하다’형 단어가 차지하는 비중이 매우 높아서 단어 형태를 일치시키려는 경향성이 강하기 때문으로 보았다. 한편 ‘거무칙칙하다’를 합성어로 분석함에 따라서 사전의 뜻풀이도 “검다”가 “칙칙하다”를 수식하는 구조인 “거무스름하면서 칙칙하다.” 식으로 바꿀 것을 제안했다. 따라서 이 정보를 국어사전에 반영하고, ‘거무칙칙’에서 ‘거무칙칙하다’가 파생되었다는 설명은 빼야 할 것이다.
