Nuclear Astrophysics Experiments for Explosive Hydrogen Burning

Explosive phenomena, such as X-ray bursts and novae, are generated by nuclear fusion processes known as the rapid proton capture (rp) process, which are responsible for creating elements up to and beyond the iron isotopes. There are some key nuclear reactions, such as the $^{15}$O($\alpha,\gamma$)$^{19}$Ne and $^{14}$O($\alpha$,p)$^{17}$F reactions, for understanding the mechanism of these hydrogen burnings, especially when the breakout from the HCNO cycle to the rp-process occurs. Measuring these two reaction rates and many other reactions in the rp-process path requires radioactive ion beams. Our experiments with radioactive $^{14}$O and $^{15}$O beams and some future considerations with radioactive ion (RI) beams are described.
Experiments for Explosive Nuclear Reactions in Stellar Environments

One of the major ways of studying the Universe is laboratory measurements of the nuclear reactions that are responsible for energy generation and creating new elements in stellar environments. There are many key nuclear reactions that require laboratory measurements for understanding stellar sites such as the Sun, novae, supernovae, and x-ray bursts. Two such reactions that are important for understanding the break-out mechanism from the Hot CNO cycle in explosive hydrogen burnings are the 14O(; p)17F and 15O(; )19Ne reactions. A brief review of the above reactions and some new experimental methods to measure one of the reactions, the 14O(,p)17F reaction, using radioactive beams at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in U.S. and CNS in Japan will be discussed.

Objective: This clinical study aims to report the effect of acupuncture and moxibustion treatment in a patient with Parkinson's disease. Methods: The patient was treated with acupuncture totally eight times, which was applied at LU8, LR4, HT3, LR2, GV20, and GB20 and moxibustion at CV12, CV4. The effect of treatment was evaluated using the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS). Results: After treatment the patient's UPDRS scores improved from 78 to 29 points after 28 days, and the patient's symptoms of tremor also improved. Conclusions: The Korean medicine treatment of acupuncture might be effective for Parkinson's disease.

Along with the centripetal force, the centrifugal force is a term widely used in high school physics, earth science textbooks and college textbooks to explain circular motions. However, many students and teachers can have misconceptions. The centrifugal force is not a real force, and historically the term “centrifugal force” has been used because of an incorrect understanding of the circular motion. Because it can create unnecessary misconceptions for students, we examine physics textbooks that are widely used in high schools and colleges in Korea. Our study indicates that all the high school textbooks mention the centrifugal force whereas 75% of the college introductory physics textbooks either do not use the term or recommend not using the term. Because of the difficulties associated with the centrifugal force, i.e. it can give wrong conceptual ideas to high school students and first year college students, more careful introduction of the force is needed. 원심력은 고등학교 물리 및 지구과학 교과서와 대학교 물리교재에서물체의 원운동을 설명할 때 많이 사용되는 물리용어이다. 그러나 학생,교사와 대학교에서 일반물리를 가르치는 교수들도 이에 관련된 오개념을가지고 있을 수 있다. 원심력은 원운동에서 회전 좌표계에서 물체의운동을 설명하기 위해 가상으로 도입한 힘이고, 실제로 존재하지 않는힘이다. 가상의 힘인 원심력에 대해 다양한 오개념이 존재하는 만큼고등학교 및 대학교 물리책에서 원운동 설명시 원심력이 어떻게 사용되고있는지 비교 분석이 선행되어야 한다. 현재 사용하고 있는 국내외 물리,지구과학 교과서와 대학교재에 제시된 원심력 부분을 분석하였다. 본연구에서 분석한 국내외 대학 일반물리 교재 20건의 경우 원심력을사용하여 원운동을 설명한 경우가 분석한 교재의 25 %이고 교재전체에서 원심력을 전혀 언급하지 않거나 사용하지 말아야 한다고제언하는 교재는 75 %이다. 반면 모든 국내 고등학교 물리, 지구과학 Ⅱ교과서에서는 원심력의 정의와 원심력과 관련된 물리현상을 2-4 페이지에걸쳐 설명하고 있다. 고등학교에서 배운 원심력 개념이 많은 대학일반물리 교재에서는 언급되어 있지 않기 때문에 학생들에게 인지갈등을유발할 수 있다. 그러므로 고등학교와 대학교에서 학생들에게 원운동을설명할 때 연계성 있는 올바른 지도방법에 대한 고찰이 필요하다.

In this paper, the reliability (NBTI degradation: ${\Delta}V_{th}$) and device characteristic of nano-scale PMOSFET with plasma nitrided oxide (PNO) is characterized in depth by comparing those with thermally nitrided oxide (TNO). PNO case shows the reduction of gate leakage current and interface state density compared to TNO with no change of the $I_{D.sat}\;vs.\;I_{OFF}$ characteristics. Gate oxide capacitance (Cox) of PNO is larger than TNO and it increases as the N concentration increases in PNO. PNO also shows the improvement of NBTI characteristics because the nitrogen peak layer is located near the $Poly/SiO_2$ interface. However, if the nitrogen concentration in PNO oxide increases, threshold voltage degradation $({\Delta}V_{th})$ becomes more degraded by NBT stress due to the enhanced generation of the fixed oxide charges.

Object : This clinical study is to report the effects of Chengsimyeonjatang-gamibang on tremors. Methods : Two patients was treated with Chengsimyeonjatang-gamibang and acupuncture that was applied at LU8, LR4, HT3, LR2, GV20, GB20. The effect of treatment was evaluated by Visual Analog Scale(VAS) and Motor examination of Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale(UPDRSIII). Results : After Korean medicine treatment, the patients' VAS and UPDRSIII scores were decreased and conditions were improved. Conclusions : The Korean medicine treatment of Chengsimyeonjatang-gamibang and acupuncture might be effective for the tremors.
