Han, Moon-Sub and Ha, Jong-Bum. 2006. Culture and Motivation in Second Language Acquisition: A Case Study with Two Korean Graduate Students in an ESL Situation. Korean Journal of English Language and Linguistics 6-2, 351-371. Our study investigated how two Korean graduate students felt about their English learning in an ESL situation in terms of culture and motivation. Two participants, who had shown differential achievement of learning English, were interviewed based on the questionnaire that asked about their ultimate goal for learning English, their use of English and Korean, their motivation for learning English, the role of Korean culture on English learning, etc. The results showed that some of the aspects of Korean cultures (i.e. strong community) had been a negative factor for their English learning, and, above all, more use of Korean in their community and possibly less English input and use had been preventing them from developing their English competences. In our study, the motivation factor does not seem to explain their differential achievement of English, since it is high instrumental motivation that both the participants showed toward their English learning, although they also displayed some integrative motivation. Rather, it appears that target language input and some personal factors, such as aptitude, anxiety, attitude toward English, explain their differential achievement of English.
Teaching an ESP Writing Course Collaboratively through a Web Community
한문섭,김경혜 팬코리아영어교육학회 2008 영어교육연구 Vol.20 No.4
This qualitative research was conducted to investigate how to implement an ESP writing course taught in collaboration utilizing the web community. An ESP writing course was designed for the English education students who were preparing for the national teachers’ certificate exam. During the intensive two-week ESP writing course, the students wrote essays on four English education topics and received feedback on the structure and the content. Two native English speaking teachers and a bilingual Korean teacher provided the feedback collaboratively through the web community. The researchers suggest three implications from this study: 1) organization of pre-course teacher training, 2) establishment of virtual teacher collaboration, and 3) implementation of the virtual writing lab.

We investigate silicon-rich silicon-nitride (SRSN) films grown by using plasma-enhanced chemicalvapor deposition (PECVD). We xed the flow rate of silane and varied that of the nitrogen gas. We measured the photoluminescence (PL) spectrum and the chemical states of the samples by using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Observing the Si 2p core-level spectra, we note that the less the silicon amount is in the matrix, the shorter the wavelength of the PL peak position has due to the reduced size of nc-Si clusters. Investigating the effect of annealing on the chemical states and the luminescence properties of the sample, we report that the PL intensity is strongly enhanced and reaches a maximum value after the first 5 minutes of annealing and is 12 times stronger than that of the as-deposited sample while the PL intensity decreases gradually for longer annealing times. We note also that the PL peak position shifts accordingly toward the red. Analyzing the chemical state components of the Si 2p core-level spectra, we extract several components of dierent chemical states. Using the chemical state analysis, we discuss the relation between the intensity enhancement of the samples and the chemical state changes of silicon-nitrogen bonding.
Strong Luminescence and Easy Color Control for SiOx Thin Films by Using RF Magnetron Sputtering
한문섭,Jiho Joo,장승훈,Kiyoung Jung,고창훈 한국물리학회 2008 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.53 No.3
Silicon-rich silicon-oxide (SRSO) films were deposited at room temperature by using an RF magnetron sputtering method. The optical properties and the chemical state of these films were characterized by using photoluminescence (PL) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). We obtained light emissions of blue, yellow and red colors in the PL spectra by adjusting the power of the RF-generated plasma. Annealing the films at 1000 ℃ for 5 min, 10 min and 30 min, respectively, in an ultra-high-vacuum (UHV) chamber, we observed that the PL intensity was enhanced by 6 to 40 times that of the as-deposited sample. We also measured the core-level spectra of the related elements by using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Investigating the chemical state change of the silicon 2p core-level, we found that the color variation and the light emission efficiency of the SRSO materials were strongly affected by the oxygen content embedded in the deposited lms. This means that the PL wavelength of the SRSO films can be readily controlled by RF plasma power tuning. In order to explain the PL enhancement after the thermal treatment in UHV, we discuss the luminescence origin being closely related to the formation of nano-crystals and of optically-active defect states.

This paper reviews research articles on English grammar instruction in Korea published in the journal of English Teaching since 1965. It analyzes current trends of research studies and provides prospects for future research studies in the field of English grammar instruction. A total of 45 research papers were reviewed and analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The quantitative analyses revealed that over 90 percent of the articles have been published since 1990 and most of them have explored the efficacy of grammar teaching under the approach of focus on form. The qualitative analyses present thorough reviews of the published research papers with the emphasis on themes, research methods, and their pedagogical implications. The limitations of the published articles and some suggestions for the development of English grammar instruction are provided.

The purpose of this study is to explore the rater reliability and test validity of SEPT (Spoken English Proficiency Test) developed by YBM Sisa-Yong-A-Sa in Korea. For this purpose. the performance of 47 test-takers was rated and analyzed using Rasch modelled FACETS (Linacre & Wright. 1993), Speaking performance in SEPT was also compared with candidates' TOEIC sub-scores. After exploring the psychometric extent to which the test criteria and tasks of the SEPT are valid. it was concluded that the testing scheme partially met the theoretical and empirical consideration behind the test specification and rater training. Implications for further revision of the SEPT are discussed.

This study examined EM compatibility between noise from electric railway and signal of ILS in the case that an AC double track system is located about 1㎞ far from end zone of runway at the airport. ILS is the most major equipment to help give airplane route during the landing.
