Why and How Do Sojourners Talk about Macao? Effects of Perceived Risk and Expected Benefit
최서희,Lisa Tam,Kadir Ayhan,이동민 이화여자대학교 국제지역연구소 2019 Asian International Studies Review Vol.20 No.2
Due to the growing popularity of digital platforms, social mediaconversations have been proposed and used as an indicator ofpublic diplomacy outcomes. Despite this, existing research hasfound that most publics were unwilling to engage with foreigncountries on social media. Considering this, this study seeks toidentify factors that motivate and/or constrain individuals’engagement in conversations about foreign countries. A surveyand semi-structured interviews were conducted with sojournerswho temporarily resided in Macao. When choosing how (i.e.,channels) and what (i.e., content) to transmit, they managed thetension between perceived risk and expected benefit. Reflectingthe theory of planned behavior, where individuals’ motivation(i.e., intended outcomes) and perceived behavioral control (i.e.,ability to manage the tension between perceived risk andexpected benefit to achieve such intended outcomes) predictbehavioral intentions, the findings unveil the limitations ofmonitoring and tracking social media conversations as anindicator of public diplomacy outcomes.

Purpose: Idiopathic granulomatous mastitis (IGM) is a rare chronic inflammatory breast disease that mimics breast cancer in terms of clinical and radiological finding. The treatment of IGM remains controversial. We aim to evaluate the clinicopathological feature and outcomes of IGM. Methods: Fifty five pathologically confirmed IGM patients who were treated between 2005 and 2013 were enrolled. All patients were categorized into three groups according to treatment methods: conservative care including observation, aspiration, and antibiotics; steroid; surgical intervention groups. Results: The median age at time of diagnosis was 35.8 years (range, 20–49 years). The most common chief complaints were a palpable mass (40.0%) followed by painful mass (32.7%) and pain (21.8%). Thirty-one patients were treated with antibiotics for their initial treatment. Steroid treatment was initially performed in eighteen cases. The initial steroid treatment was changed to methotrexate treatment in six patients who developed side effects, such as steroid-induced diabetes mellitus and Cushing’s syndrome or showed no response to treatment. Surgical interventions were performed in six patients as the first-line treatment. Mean time to remission was 7.2±6.9 months and 1-year recurrence-free interval was 89%. Mean time to remission in conservative care group and steroid group was 5.3±5.6 months and 11.4±7.9 months, respectively, and it was significantly different (p=0.008). Conclusion: A multidisciplinary approach including close observation, antibiotics treatment, systemic steroid, methotrexate, and surgical intervention is the currently available treatment option for IGM. IGM should be closely followed up due to the frequency of disease recurrence.

Purpose: Follicular lymphoma (FL) is an indolent non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma that is highly sensitive to radiotherapy (RT). However, the effectiveness of RT has not been well established. We reviewed our experiences to assess the role of RT for FL and analyze treatment results. Materials and Methods: Retrospective analysis was done on 29 patients who received first RT between January 2003 and August 2013. Of 23 early stage (stage I, II) patients, 16 received RT alone, four received chemotherapy followed by RT, two received RT postoperatively, and one received salvage RT for relapse after resection. Six advanced-stage (stage III, IV) patients received RT after chemotherapy: two received consolidation RT, three received salvage RT for residual lesions, and one received RT for progressive sites. Median RT dose was 30.6 Gy (range, 21.6 to 48.6 Gy). Median follow-up duration was 62 months (range, 6 to 141 months). Results: All patients showed complete response in the radiation field. Eight outfield relapses were reported. Seven patients received salvage treatment (three chemotherapy, four RT). Four patients showed excellent responses, especially to RT. Estimated 5-year and 10-year relapse-free survivals were 72% and 60%. In the RT-alone group, 5-year relapse-free survival was 74.5%. All advanced-stage patients were disease-free with 100% 5-year overall survival. Disease-specific death was noted in only one patient; four others died of other unrelated causes. No significant toxicity was reported. Conclusion: RT resulted in excellent treatment outcomes for all FL stages when used as a primary treatment modality for early stage or salvage-treatment modality for advanced-stage disease.
