Several soil improvement methods are applied to stabilize soft ground. But their improvement effects are known to be reduced in view of strength under poor conditions such as marine clay. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the strength increase effects of super injection grouting on the marine clay. A series of laboratory tests and chemical analysis tests has been performed. Through this study, the causes of strength inferiority of treated soil was analyzed and soil improvement effects of grouted soil was presented.

The purpose of this paper is to recycle coal ash as structural backfill materials from electric power plants. Two million tons of coal ash are produced annually. The laboratory test was executed for the basic compatibility as substitution for structural backfill materials, and the optimal mixture ratio(fly ash : bottom ash) was decided. In addition, the model test was performed using medium scale earth pressure model with small size earth pressure cells, model box, data logger and some other apparatuses. Mixed coal ash and excellent backfill materials(cohesionless soil, SW) were compared in the view of lateral earth pressure variation depending on wall displacement. The reduction of earth pressure when coal ash was used as a backfill material was monitored comparing to that of cohesionless soil. The cost and environmental pollutants by treating coal ash can be reduced through developing the recycling technology.

In this paper, the effect of ground improvement and the countermeasure for the increase of strength in soft ground(wasted fill, marine clay) was studied through utilization of Soilcrete Cement as a matetial of gound improvement. Soil samples were obtained from ○○○ sanitary landfill to assess the applicability of the clay liner using Soilcrete Cement. Several laboratory tests were performed with the samples and skin corrosion tests of steel pipe covered with Soilcrete Cement were performed As a result, Soilcrete Cement is considered to be applicable to the construction site and to be effective for the prevention of the corrosion of the steel pipe.

The use of compaction grouting evolved in 1950's to correct structural settlement of buildings. Over the almost 50 years, the technology has been developed and is currently used in wide range of applications. Compaction grouting, the injection of a very stiff, 'zero-slump' mortar grout under relatively high pressure, displaces and compacts soils. It can effectively repair natural or man-made soil strength deficiencies in variety of soil formations. Major applications of compaction grouting include densifying loose soils or fill voids caused by sinkholes, poorly compacted fills, broken utilities, improper dewatering, or soft ground tunneling excavation. Other applications include preventing liquefaction, re-leveling settled structures, and using compaction grout bulbs as structural elements of minipiles or underpinning. In this paper, on the basis of the case history constructed in this year, a study has been performed to analyze the basic mechanism of the compaction grouting. Also, the effectiveness of the ground improvement and the bearing capacity of the compaction pile has been verified by the Cone Penetration Test(CPT) and Load Test. Relatively uniform compaction grouting column could be maintained by planning the quality control in the course of grouting. And, the Quality Control Plan has been conceived using grout pressure, volume of grout and drilling depth.

Modulus of subgrade reaction is very important parameter for analysis of laterally loaded piles and earth support systems. To determine the modulus of subgrade reactions of piles, The experimental correlations are used between the modulus and the pressure meter test results or the standard penetration test results indirectly. And a direct method of determining the modulus is to practice the lateral load test of piles. But there is a difference between the actual moduli and experimental results. In this paper, the moduli of subgrade reaction based on the lateral load tests are calculated using Chang's method to compare the actual values with experimental correlations. Conclusionally, experimental correlations of only function of SPT-N values underestimate the moduli. And the moduli determined by the experimental correlations for pile analysis are overestimated. So, it is needed to apply the reduction coefficient to the experimental correlations for design of the laterally loaded piles.

Sand Compaction Pile (SCP) method, which uses sand material, is frequently used in Korea. However, the use of sand for SCP faces environmental and economical problems with the shortage of its resources. Therefore, it is necessary to substitute other materials for compaction piles. One of the alternatives is using gravel in lieu of sand. Granular Pile, constituted with sand and crushed-stone, is one of the methods to improve soft clay and loose sandy ground. In this study, modeled pile load tests are performed in test cell. The observations are made on the consolidation and the variation of water table of three different grounds, original, sand pile installed, and granular pile installed ground. In addition, engineering characteristics such as bearing capacity, settlement and drainage are investigated. The test results show that Gravel Compaction Pile (GCP) is more efficient for increasing bearing capacity and reducing settlement than SCP and had similar pore water pressure dissipation to sand. Therefore, the results show that GCP can be a good substitution for SCP.
