Feeding behavior of the Russet Sparrow Passer rutilans was studied in two different types of habitats, shelter belts and isolated forests, in south-eastern Hokkaido, Japan, during the breeding seasons of 1995 and 1996. Predominant foods were determined as Caterpillar, Coleoptera, Diptera, Ephemeropera, Odonate and some other insects. The composition of the nestiling foods were not the same by season, region, and year. Larger foods in size were used by birds in isolated forests more frequently than in shelter belts. Amount of food per feeding was significantly larger in isolated forests than in shelter belts. Although food supply were more abundant in isolated forests than in shelter belts, the feeding frequency did not significantly differ between these two habitats. The nest density was higher in isolated forests than in shelter belts. Results of this study indicate that when the feeding condition is poor, birds tend not show specific food selection behavior, the feeding range is therefore larger, and the feeding interval is longer. Contrarily, the birds show a specific food selection behavior when they are in good feeding condition, the feeding range is therefor smaller and the feeding interval decreases.

Body size of the Russet Sparrow (Passer rutilans) was investigated during the breeding seasons of 1994 to 1996, in south-eastern Hokkaido, Japan. Both male and female arrived slightly earlier in isolated forests than in shelter belts during the study. Wing lengths of males and females were significantly longer in isolated forests than those in shelter belts, but the other body size characteristics were not differ significantly. The results indicate habitat selection of the birds depended on their body constructions, in which wing length as an indicator, body size may be an important factor. Large-sized birds select the better quality habitat than birds of small size.

Hypoxic damage is one of the major causes of islet graft failure and VEGF is known to play a crucial role in revascularization. To address the effectiveness of a cationic lipid reagent as a VEGF gene carrier, and the beneficial effect of VEGF-transfected islets on glycemic control, we used effectene lipid reagent in a transfection experiment using mouse islets. Transfection efficiencies were highest for 4 µg/µL cDNA and 25 µL effectene and cell viabilities were also satisfactory under this condition, and the over-production of VEGF mRNA and protein were confirmed from conditioned cells. A minimal number of VEGF-transfected islets (100 IEQ/animal) were transplanted into streptozotocin (STZ)-induced di-abetic mice. Hyperglycemia was not controlled in the islet transplantation (IT)-alone group (0/8) (non-diabetic glucose mice number/total recipient mice number) or in the IT-pJDK control vector group (0/8). However, hyperglycemia was completely abrogated in the IT-pJDK-VEGF transduced group (8/8), and viable isles and increased VEGF-transfected grafts vascularization were observed in renal capsules. These studies support the usefulness of VEGF-transfected islet delivery using a cationic lipid reagent to achieve euglycemia using a minimal number of islets.

This study aims to develop and examine an efficient integrated reading and writing instruction for elementary school upper grades using chapter books. For the study, 4 chapter books were selected, and an integrated reading and writing instruction model was developed and implemented in one 6th grade class for 12 weeks. To see the effects of the instruction model, various types of data were collected through a pre and post reading and writing tests and questionnaires about affective attitudes. In addition, teacher's journals and students' logs were kept. The results are as follows. The integrated reading and writing lessons using chapter books had significantly positive influence on students' reading and writing ability. It also had meaningfully positive influence on students' emotional domains such as interest, participation, confidence, adventure, and anxiety. When they read and understood long stories in English in chapter books, the students felt a sense of achievement, which encouraged their positive participation and raised their confidence in English. The writing activities before and after reading chapter books were effective in students' reading and writing growth. They were such various activities that maintained students' desire to read sustainedly and demanded their participation mentally as well as physically. But there is a warning that chapter books should be cautiously selected in consideration of students' cognitive and linguistic level.
