본 논문에서는 동시대 예술 사진에서 발견되는 ‘바니타스(vanitas)’ 회화의 영향에 대해서 살펴보았다. 바니타스 알레고리는 17세기 이후 네덜란드를 중심으로 전 유럽에서 전개된 예술적 방법론이다. 19세기 이후 한동안 상징주의에 자리를 내주었던 바니타스 알레고리는 20세기 중반 이후 현대 미술에서 중요한 개념으로 부활하였다. 게르하르트 리히터, 데미언 허스트, 수보드 굽타, 김기라, 윤다미, 이병호, 함경아 등의 작가들은 바니타스 회화의 개념을 통해 동시대의 중요한 화두들을 자신들의 작품에서 표현하고 있다. 현대 시각 예술 전반에서 확인할 수 있는 바니타스 회화의 영향은 동시대 예술 사진에서도 확인할 수 있다. 폴레트 타보르미나, 저스틴 레예즈, 맷 콜리쇼, 오리 거쉬트, 로라 레틴스키, 데이비드 라샤펠, 발레리 벨린, 정현목, 최재은, 나이젤 모리스 등의 예술 사진 작품에서는 바니타스 회화의 전통이 다양한 방법으로 발현되고 있다. 이 작가들은 바니타스 정물화의 사진적 재현에 집중하기도 하고, 바니타스 정물화와 동일한 주제 의식을 현대적으로 재해석해서 표현하기도 하며, 바니타스 정물화가 지니고 있는 인생무상의 개념을 현대 사회의 문제점과 접목하기도 한다. 주로 정물 사진의 영역에서 다루어지던 바니타스 개념은 점차 초상사진의 영역으로까지 확장되고 있다. 동시대 시각예술에서 바니타스 회화의 개념이 부활하는 것은 17세기 유럽의 시대적 상황과 21세기 작금의 시대적 상황이 지닌 유사성에서 기인한다. 물질 중심의 세계관 속에서 더욱 더 소외되어 가는 현대인들의 심리적 불편함 혹은 가치의 혼돈을 다루는데 바니타스 회화의 개념과 형식이 여전히 유효하기 때문이다. 다만, 여러 작가들이 바니타스 알레고리의 주요 도상들을 상투적으로 남발하고 있는 것은 바니타스 회화의 부활이 가지고 있는 한계라고 볼 수도 있다. 앞으로 이러한 한계를 극복하고 새로운 의미와 방법을 제시하는 것이 바니타스 개념을 사용하는 작가들의 임무일 것이다. This study has a purpose of verifying Vanitas allegories utilized by contemporary photographers and variations of the exemplifications. This examines the traditional style and allegorical methodology of Leiden and Dutch Vanitas paintings in the 17th century. Having given its priority to symbolism in the 19th century, Vanitas allegories resurged as an influential concept in contemporary visual art in and after the mid-20th century. The concept has expressed contemporary significance issues in works of contemporary visual artists: Gerhard Richter, Damien Hirst, Subodh Gupta, Kira Kim, Dami Yun, Byungho Lee, and Kyungah Ham. Works of Paulette Tavormina, Justin Reyes, Mat Collishaw, Ori Gersht, Laura Letinsky, David Lachapelle, Hyun -Mok Jung, Valerie Belin, Jae-Eun Choi, and Nigel Morris show the traditions of Vanitas paintings in various ways. Some focus on the photographic reproduction of Vanitas still-life paintings, some reinterpret the message of Vanitas still-life paintings in modern style, or others graft the concept of ‘Vanitas vanitatum’ on today's issues. Employment of Vanitas concept expands its way from still-life photos to portraits. The resurgence of the concept of Vanitas paintings results from the similarity of social phenomena in these days of 21st century to those of Europe in 17th century. The concept and format of Vanitas paintings are still valid to dealing with psychological uneasiness and value confusion of moderns, who are increasingly isolated in the world of materialism. However, this study indicates that the limit of incomplete resurgence of Vanitas paintings appears with many of photographers above who overuse conventional icons of Vanitas allegories. It is necessary that the photographers who utilize Vanitas concepts overcome this limit and suggest original meaning and methods.
