Hypercholesterolemia is one of the well-established risk factors for cardiovascular mortality and morbidity in coronary heart disease. The present study was designed to investigate the effects of different types of extracts (aqueous, 20%-, and 80% ethanol) of Nelumbo nucifera leaf (NL) and Curcuma Longa L. (CL) on hypercholesterolemia in in vitro and in vivo models. Our results in in vitro experiments showed that treatment with various extracts of both NL and CL dose-dependently inhibited lipid accumulation and total cholesterol content. The 20% ethanol extract of NL (NL20E) and the aqueous extract of CL (CLW) showed the highest activity. The in vivo experimental group was fed a high cholesterol diet (HCD) with oral administration of NL20E, CLW, or a mixture of NL20E with CLW(NC; mixed equal ratio) for 8 weeks. The oral administration of NL20E, CLW, and NC (100 or 300 mg/kg/day) resulted in the suppression of the levels of serum total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol, liver lipid level, glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT), glutamic pyruvic transaminase (GPT), atherogenic index (AI), cardiac risk factor (CRF), cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP), HMG-CoA reductase, and thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS). Similarly, the NL20E, CLW, and NC extracts elevated high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol levels and lecithin cholesterol acyltransferase (LCAT) activity. Furthermore, NC showed a remarkable hypocholesterolemic effect by decreasing the levels of hepatic TC, AI, LDL cholesterol, HMG-CoA reductase, and CRE and by increasing the levels of HDL cholesterol. Thus, the results of this study indicate that the NC has combined hypocholesterolemic effects that block lipid accumulation, thus preventing hypercholesterolemia.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determined that the efficacy and comfort of iontophoretic transdermal delivery of lidocaine by comparison of local anesthetic duration, sensory threshold, pain threshold and pain tolerance levels according to four different cleansing regimes. Methods: Forty healthy volunteers were randomly assigned to four groups; oil cleansing group, lotion cleansing group, solution cleansing group and alcohol cleansing group. All subjects were received lidocaine iontophoresis on the forearm using direct current with 4 mA for 10 minutes. All subjects were measured the duration of local anesthesia after lidocaine iontophoresis, also evaluated the sensory threshold, pain threshold and pain tolerance level during iontophoresis. For comparisons of the efficacy and the sensory characteristics of iontophoresis within the groups, an one-way ANOVA was used. Results: The duration of local anesthesia were found significant difference between groups (p<0.001). The anesthetic duration in solution and alcohol cleansing groups were significantly longer than oil and lotion cleansing group by post hoc (p<0.05). Statistically significant difference were noted in respect to all sensory characteristics such as sensory threshold, pain threshold and pain tolerance between groups (p<0.001). The sensory threshold in solution and alcohol cleansing group were significantly lower than oil and lotion cleansing group by post hoc using Duncan multiple range test (p<0.05). The pain threshold and pain tolerance in solution and alcohol cleansing group were significantly higher than oil and lotion cleansing group by post hoc (p<0.05). Conclusion: These results demonstrated that cleansing regimes have affected the efficacy and discomfort of iontophoretic transdermal delivery of lidocaine. These findings indicate that cleansing agents without oil ingredient contributed to more comfort, and more successful achievement of the iontophoretic transdermal delivery.
마황 에탄올추출물의 Tyrosinase 활성 억제 및 Melanin 생성 억제 효과

This study observed the effects of Ephedra sinica (E. sinica ) ethanol extract in SK-MEL-2 cells ontyrosinase activity and melanin generation to identify its whitening activity and searched for changes inthe protein expression of tyrosinase, TRP-1 and TRP-2 which are involved in melanin synthesis. Also,α-MSH, a melanin-stimulating enzyme was applied to skin to induce hyperpigmentation and to identifythe skin whitening effect. The following results were obtained. As a result of measuring its tyrosinaseinhibitory activity in vitro , it showed good inhibitory rates depending on concentration. When its effect ontyrosinase activity and melanin generation in SK-MEL-2 cell was analysed, tyrosinase activity decreased ata concentration of 50 ㎍/mL and with arbutin at 82.2%, and tyrosinase activity decreased 70.4% in E. sinicaethanol extract. As a result of measuring melanin generation, arbutin was inhibited 83.6% in 50 ㎍/mL ,and 64% of E. sinica ethanol extract inhibited melanin. In investigating the effect of tyrosinase, TRP-1 andTRP-2 on protein expression in hyperpigmentation by α-MSH using western blot, E. sinica ethanol extractmade the expression of tyrosinase and TRP2 decrease more significantly than arbutin. Therefore, E. sinicaethanol extract showed good effects in inhibiting tyrosinase activity and melanin generation in SK-MEL-2cells, and inhibited melanin synthesis through inhibition of gene expression. Also, it effectively decreasedthe generation of tyrosinase and melanin increased by α-MSH. Based on the results above, it is suggestedthat E. sinica can be developed as a natural skin care material for use in whitening.

본 글에서는 3·1운동과 임시정부 탄생 100주년을 기념하여 열린 많은 전시 중 주목할 만한 4개의 전시를 그 기획의도를 중심으로 살펴보았다. 대한민국역사박물관에서는 진정한 의미의 한국현대사의 시작이라고 할 수 있는 3·1운동과 임시정부수립에 대하여 서로 다른 3개의 주제를 동시에 선보였다. 서울역사박물관에서는 서울과 평양 두 도시에서 일어난 3·1운동을 도시사적 관점에서 장소성에 천착하여 전시하였다. 독립기념관은 3·1운동 주제관인 “겨레의 함성관”을 전면 개편하면서 선열들의 독립정신을 ‘국민’들에게 강렬하게 보여주었다. 한편 문화재청에서는 서대문형무소역사관 옥사를 전시실 삼아 항일 등록문화재들을 전시하였다. 각각의 전시들은 같은 3·1운동을 주제로 하지만 주최기관의 정체성에서 기인하는 특징을 흥미롭게 보여주고 있었다.

Pelvic actinomycosis is a chronic granulomatous suppurative disease caused by an anaerobic grampositive organism Actinomyces israelii. It is com-monly associated with an intrauterine device(IUD) and can mimick pelvic or intra-abdominal malignant neoplasm. Ureteral obstruction leading to hydronephrosis is a rare complication of tubo-ovarian abscess. We experienced a case of hydronephrosis as a complication of pelvic actinomycotic abscess. The patient was a 46-year-old women presenting with fever and right flank pain. Leukocytosis and pyuria were present and a hydronephrosis was diagnosed by intravenous pyelography. Ultrasonography and a computerised tomography revealed a mass in right adnexum compressing the right ureter. Removal of retroperitoneal abscess and salphingo-oophorectomy were done and the diagnosis of actinomycosis was made by pathologic finding of resected mass. Postoperatively, the patient was treated with second-generation cephalosporin successfully. (Korean J Nephrol 2002;21(2):337-340)
