Clinical Observations were made on 46 cases of group A streptococcal bacteremia, admitted in Severance Hospital from January 1900 to June 1992. Following results were obtained. 1) In age and sex distribution, mean age was 31.7 years old and all age groups were affected. The male to female ratio was 1:1. There was seasonal variation in the prevalence with fewer cases occuring in the summer months(July-October). 2) There were 30 cases (65%) of significant bacteremia, 9 cases (20%) of transient bactermia and 7 cases(15%) of nosocomial bacteremia. And there were 35 cases(76%) of monomicrobial bacteremia and 11 cases(24%) of polymicrobial bacteremia. S. aureus was the most commonly concomitant pathogen in polymicrobial bacteremia. 3) In the clinical symtoms and signs, fever and chilling were most common. The gastrointestinal symptoms were frequently noted. There were 4 cases (9%) of cataneous symptoms. 4) All of our patients had concomitant underlying conditions : Malignant disease was most common (14 case-30%). There were 10 cases (21%) of chronic heart disease, 7 cases (15%) of chronic lung disease, 3 cases(7%) of diabetes melitus. 3 cases(7%) of liver cirrhosis, 3 cases (7%) of pregnancy, 2 cases (4%) of puerperium, and 1 case (2%) of steroid immunosuppressive therapy. And among 14 cases of malignant disease, 9 cases(64%) had solid tumors. 5) The lower respiratory tract was the commonest portal of entry (22 case-48%). There were 6 cases (13%) of hepatobiliary-gastrointestinal tract, 5 cases (11%) of female genital tract, 4 cases (9%) of skin and 1 case of infective endocarditis. We observed 7 cases (15%) of primary (cryptogenic) septicemias and the patients with primary septicemia had a lower mean age (22.2 years old) but no sexual predisposition and no difference in mortality rate. Most patients of primary septicemia had concomitant underlying deseases. 6) The mortality rate was 17%(8 cases) and septic shock/hypotension and confusion were associated with higher rates of mortality.

In this paper, an experimental study was conducted on the performance characteristics of a packed-bed type liquid dehumidifier. The object of this study is to find out the characteristics of the dehumidifier analytically according to the variations of relative humidity and velocity of the process air. The liquid desiccant used in the experiment are aqueous lithium chloride(LiCl) solution. As results, dehumidification rate increases with an increase in velocity and relative humidity of process air, but effectiveness of dehumidification decreases. The dehumidification rate was about 12.39 ~ 34.06 g/min and effectiveness of dehumidification was 18.75 ∼ 33.64%.

In this study, numerical analysis investigations were conducted on the design optimization of a heat exchanger for the cooling of a power generator. A heat exchanger using coolant was selected after investigating the suitability of cooling methods applicable to power generator cooling. The fractional factorial design of the experiment and response surface method were used for the optimization process. Minitab and Design Experts, which are statistical programs, were used to establish the analysis conditions and analyze the results. The heat transfer rate of the heat exchanger, the pressure drop of the coolant, and the efficiency of the heat exchanger were selected as the heat exchanging performance index. The first optimization step was conducted to derive the main design factors that could influence the heat exchanging performance. The main derived design factors were the width and height of the heat exchanger channel and the volumetric flow of the coolant. The second optimization step was conducted to optimize the main design factors derived in the first optimization step. Although the pressure drop somewhat increased compared to the standard condition, the heat transfer rate and efficiency increased by 1.15 kW and 6.28%, presenting the optimized heat exchanger shape and conditions.

HFO refrigerants have recently come to be regarded as promising alternatives to R134a for use in turbo chillers. This study provides results from experiments evaluating the film condensation heat transfer characteristics of HFO refrigerants R1234ze(E) and R1233zd(E) on smooth horizontal laboratory tubes. The experiments were conducted at a saturation vapor temperature of 38.0℃ with surface sub-cooling temperatures in the range of 3~15℃. We observe that the film condensation heat transfer coefficient decreases as surface sub-cooling temperatures increase. In the case of laboratory tubes with a diameter of 19.05 mm, the film condensation heat transfer coefficients of R1234ze(E) and R1233zd(E) were approximately 11% and 20% lower than those of R134a, respectively. Furthermore, our investigation of the effect of tube diameter on film condensation heat transfer coefficients, demonstrates an inverse relationship where the film condensation heat transfer coefficient increases as laboratory tube diameter decreases. We propose experimental correlations of Nusselt number for R1234ze(E) and R1233zd(E), which yield a ±20% error band.

In this study, experimental investigations on the film condensation heat transfer coefficients of R134a, R1233zd(E) and R1234ze(E) were carried out. The goal of present study was to compare the heat transfer coefficients of three different refrigerants mentioned above. And the effect of tube diameter on heat transfer coefficients was also investigated. The saturation temperature and the surface subcooling temperature were 38℃ and 2~16℃ respectively. As a result, it was found that the film condensation heat transfer coefficient of R1234ze(E) and R1233zd(E) were lower than that of R134a about 9.1% and 29.0% respectively. And the larger the tube diameter, the lower the film condensation heat transfer coefficient.
