Entering the twentieth century, corsets began to disappear with the tendency of concentrating on slim bodies and youth. As corsets proceeded to be discarded, they began to be internalized as a means of controlling the body; ‘muscular corset’ takes hold. However, the internalized corset increasingly appears to be externalized again in contemporary fashion. This study investigates how natural body is reconstructed as socio-cultural image drawing on the relationship between the signifier and signified of corset. As for the research methodology this study conducts literature survey to investigate the internalization of corset. This study proceeds to examine the subjects of fashion collections from 1980 to 2010 and samples the outfits which represent the externalization of corset through case analysis. Through the discussion of the study, the relationship of signifier and signified in the externalization of corset is argued as follows: first, by maintaining signifier and signified of the traditional corset as underwear, aggressive eroticism of corset has been observed, second, by perceiving corset as the agency of the body, fetishism of corset dissociates the function of sexual object from corset while distorting the relationship of signifier and signified, third, through embodying the notion of muscular corset literally, the ironical representation of corset as a torturing device of female body deconstructs the traditional relation of signifier and signified of corset.

코르셋의 양면성에 관한 고찰: 포스트페미니즘 시각을 중심으로

This study discusses the ambivalence and ambiguity in the relationship between the women's body and fashion drawings in respect to post-feminism perspectives. Deconstructivist post-feminists, perceiving the body as a passive subject, asserted that women internalize the male gaze by becoming the object of male desire, then manipulate the body to conform to that ideal. In this perspective, corsets assumed the role of the tool for forcing women's body to be obedient, restraining and suppressing the body. On the other hand, in the essentialist post-feminist perspective, which regards the women's body as an active object, insists that fashion, in its essence, is not necessarily about sex, nor is it devised to attract the male gaze. In such a viewpoint, the women's body functions as a vehicle for empowerment; by wearing corset women gain power and embraces the cultural norms of dominant beauty. As investigated in this study, the corset is both a tool for oppressing the women's body, as well as a vehicle for the voluntary expression of femininity. This ambivalence in the perception of the corset in the post-feminist theory represents the double-sided perspective in fashion as being both a subordinate construction and a powerful tool for self-expression.

Subcultural style is the center of subcultural identity and the clothes and adornments are the most visible symbol of membership. The Goth subculture has associated tastes in music, aesthetics, and fashion. The style symbolized the strong subjective subcultural identity held by most Goths and acted as the practical basis to demonstrate their commitment to the subculture. This study investigates the aesthetic and the style of Goth subculture in its heyday of 1980s which has continued to affect mainstream fashion and culture since its birth. In order to inquire the concept of subculture and its style, this study executes literature survey as well as investigates the images of street style magazines to analyze the visual elements. The stylistic and the aesthetic characteristics of Goth subcultural style analyzed in this study are grouped into four categories as follows: first, Victoriana, which embodies the fear of death and the nostalgia for the past using Victorian morning dresses and corsets, second, vampirism, in that some Goths who are fascinated by vampires are costumed in vampire figures to advocate diabolism and decadence, third, sexual ambiguity of male Goths which emphasizes feminine appearance in the pursuit of androgyny, and fourth, sexual fetish of female Goths which represents aggressive eroticism utilizing fetish paraphernalia.

건축적 패션 디자인의 구조적 전략

건축과 패션은 몸을 감싸고 몸에 공간을 제공한다는 측면에서 공통점을 함유한다. 패션 디자이너와 건축가는 모두 아이디어를 채택하여 현실적인 요구 조건을 고려한 후 평면적인 재료를 사용하여 삼차원의 구조로 해석한다. 복식을 휴대 가능한 친밀한 건축으로 볼 때 패션 디자인은 건축과 비견될 수 있다. 나아가 복식과 건축은 상호의존적이며 밀접하면서도 생산적인 교류를 하고 있으며, 패션과 건축의 경계 해체는 두 장르의 관점을 종합하고 혼합하는 경향을 이끌고 있다. 패션과 건축은 각 분야에 관한 관습적 사고를 넘어서서 학제간의 새로운 연계를 구축하고 있다. 패션과 건축의 장르 간 상호작용이 풍부해짐에 따라, 건축가는 패션 디자인에 대한 경험을 건축의 영역에 적용하며 패션 디자이너는 꾸준히 독창적인 디자인을 위해 건축의 재료와 방법을 참고하고 있다. 이러한 상호작용은 하이브리드(hybrid)를 더욱 가속화하는데, 패션과 건축의 관계를 탐구하는 서적과 전시의 증가를 통해 패션과 건축의 상호작용에 대한 관심이 증폭됨을 알 수 있다. 본 연구에서 전통적인 패션 디자이너의 방식보다는 건축가의 전략을 택하는 건축적 패션 디자이너들의 디자인에 나타나는 조형적 특성을 이루는 구조적 전략을 분석한 결과, 유기적 기하학, 공학적 의복설계, 그리고 독립적 공간성의 세 가지로 나누어 고찰 되었다. 첫째, 유기적 기하학의 전략은 복식 구조를 단순한 기하학적 형태로 환원하는데, 인체해부상의 곡선으로부터 구별되는 기하학적 형태로 만들어진 복식 디자인은 몸 위에 걸쳐지면서 편평함을 잃고 섬세하고 흐르는 듯한 유기적인 형태로 변형된다. 여기서 평면적인 패턴 조각은 중력에 의해 늘어지거나 걸쳐짐으로써 완전히 다른 형태를 띠면서 몸을 둘러싸는 삼차원적인 형태로 변형된다. 둘째, 공학적 의복설계는 복식 구조와 볼륨을 탐구하고 구현하는데 서스펜션의 건축적 구조적 원리를 활용하는 디자인과, 규모가 점점 작아지는 방향으로 상세한 모양이 반복되어 비선형적 특성과 점진적 반복 작용이 나타나는 프랙탈 기하학의 조형으로 나누어 분석되었다. 마지막으로, 몸과 거리를 두고 삼차원적인 형태를 유지하는 독립적 공간성을 들 수 있는데, 이는 몸을 위한 단단한 구조를 구축하여 표면 밑의 내부 공간에서 움직이는 몸의 개념을 예시함으로써 건축과의 유사성을 추구한다. 인체 비례를 재분배하는 부피와 구조를 통해 조각적인 외관을 형성하는 독립적 공간성의 추구는 테일러링에 대한 훈련과 조각적 형태에 대한 이해로 가능하였다. 건축적 패션 디자이너들은 일반적인 의복 구성에서 중시되는 기준선이나 형태에서 벗어나 자유로운 상상력을 펼치게 된다. 건축적 패션 디자인에서는 절대적인 기능과 현실적인 접근성을 발견할 수 있다. 즉, 실제적인 복식 구조로부터 장식을 도출하며, 다양한 소재를 접고, 조각하고, 주름잡고, 매듭을 짓는 방법으로 구조와 장식을 겸한다. 이와 같이 건축적 패션 디자인은 복식 구성에 초점을 맞추어 혁신적인 복식 형태를 얻으므로 드레스메이킹의 테크닉이 창조의 과정의 중심이 된다. 즉, 디자인 미학과 드레스메이킹의 기술적 기교의 결합이 이루어진다. 건축적 패션 디자이너들은 드레스메이킹과 테일러링이라는 의복 제작의 두 주류를 교묘하게 상호작용하게 하는 방식으로 복식을 구성하므로 테일러링과 드레스메이킹을 혼합하고 그 경계를 모호하게 한다. 건축적 패션 디자이너들이 채택한 방식은 복식조형에 대한 그들의 태도를 드러낸다. 기본적인 형태를 개개인의 방식으로 의미화하여 건축가의 작업과정과 비슷한 방법으로 작업하는 디자이너들은 불필요한 장식을 피하고 자신만의 전형적 형태와의 연계를 유지하면서 구조 자체에 의미를 내포시킨다. 이들의 디자인은 몸을 감싸기보다는 몸 주위에 자리 잡도록 설계되는데, 장식적 패턴을 피하고, 단일한 색상으로 형태의 통일성을 강조하며, 명확한 형태로 인체해부의 특성을 감추기도 한다. 건축적 패션 디자이너들은 패션의 빠른 주기를 구성하는 변덕스러운 변화에 피상적으로 반응하기보다는 확고한 디자인 미학으로 패션 디자인에 창의적으로 기여해오고 있다. As the boundary between fashion and architecture is getting blurred, the interactions of the two fields are turning out abundant as well as essential. This study investigates the tectonic strategies in architectural fashion design as a novel aesthetic in the 21st century by combining literary survey and case analysis on architecture and contemporary fashion. The tectonic strategies in the works of architectural fashion designers were categorized as follows: organic geometry, technological garment construction, and independent space. Organic geometry transforms basic geometric shapes into subtle organic forms after being thrown on the body. Technological garment construction explores the garment structure and volume by applying the structural principle of suspension and fractal geometry. Independent space refers to maintaining the firm three-dimensionality of garment structure which keeps the distance from the body, assuming the similarity to architecture.

패션에 표현된 몸의 사실성 부재

몸에 관한 미의식은 시대와 문화 뿐 아니라 개인과 사회를 반영하면서 복식의 형태를 결정한다. 나아가 복식은 몸의 은폐, 노출, 왜곡 등을 통해 복식의 도구적기능을 초월하면서 몸의 의미를 재구성한다. 포스트 모더니즘 패션에서 몸이 변화 가능한 대상으로 변모하였음에 따라 몸에 대한 새로운 정의가 요구된다. 패션 디자이너가 구체화시킨 형상은 우리가 시각문화에서 몸을 이해하는 중심이 되므로, 본 연구는 포스트모던 패션에 나타나는 몸을 보는 시각을 바탕으로, 몸을 복식형태 분석의 근거로 삼아 신체부위의 확장을 중심으로 패션에 표현된 몸의 사실성 부재 현상을 파악하도록 한다. 연구방법은 문헌연구를 통해 포스트모던 패션의 몸에 관한 시각을 이론적으로 고찰하며, 패션 및 복식사 관련 서적, 컬렉션지와 패션 잡지에서 얻은 여성복사진 자료를 중심으로 실례들을 내용 분석하는 사례연구를 행한다. 연구범위는 21세기 전환기라 할 수 있는 1996년 S/S 컬렉션에서 2004년 F/W 컬렉션까지 발표된 여성복 디자인으로 몸의 사실성이 부재하는 사례를 추출하여 총 198점의 디자인을 토대로 한다. 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 몸의 사실성 부재는 대량생산을 위한 이상화되고 표준화된 몸으로부터의 이탈을 의미하며, 몸의 대칭과 균형을 기반으로 하는 관습적인 가치의 수용을 거부하기 위해 신체부위를 극단적으로 과장하는 실험의 결과라 할 수 있다. 몸의 사실성 부재는 복식의 관습과 상징을 의도적으로 거부함으로써 복식의 기표와 기의 사이의 부조화로 나타난다. The aesthetic consciousness of the body determines the form of dress, reflecting the time and culture as well as the individual and society. Moreover, dress reorganizes the meaning of the body, while transcending their instrumental functions of concealing, revealing, and deforming the body. As the body in postmodernism fashion is being considered as a manipulatable object, the needs for the redefinition of the body has arisen. Using the body to analyze the clothing form, this study develops a framework by which to classify the absence of corporeality in women`s fashion focusing on the extension of the body parts. As for the research methodology this study conducts literature survey to investigate the perspectives on the body in postmodernism fashion. This study proceeds to examine subjects of the fashion collections of the turn of the twenty-first century which are from the S/S 1996 to F/W 2004 and samples the total of 198 outfits which represent corporeal absence through the case analysis. The absence of corporeality denotes the deviation from the idealized and standardized body for mass production. It tends to experiment with extreme exaggeration of the body form which refuses to subscribe to the traditional values that build on the balance and symmetry of the body. The absence of corporeality opposes the sartorial convention and symbolism which results in the discord between signifiant and signified of clothing.

복식과 회화에 표현되는 몸의 재현 프란시스 베이컨의 -작품과 레이 카와쿠보의 컬렉션을 중심으로-

In examining the relationship between fashion and art which are intimately interrelated, the body is a suitable subject in that it is the common object of representation. This study investigates and compares the images of the body in Francis Bacon`s paintings from 1940s to 1970s and the formative aspect and aesthetic value of the abstract body images in Rei Kawakubo`s designs since 1980s. The figures in Bacon`s paintings are confusingly and atypically deformed as well as distorted, which are the combinations of the anatomies without references, not so much represented objects as experienced sense. Kawakubo`s designs attempt to deform the body, moreover, she transforms the body; represent abstract forms without association with any other figures that exist, emphasizing sculptural or architectural shapes of garment. She suggests extensive visual language of dress by challenging the norms of beauty. The body in Bacon and Kawakubo`s works is dispersive as well as complex in that the body images are deconstructed, fragmented, and exaggerated. Respectively, they articulate the perception of the body in postmodernism era by destroying the myth of subject; furthermore establish the aesthetics that transcend conventional ideals by reevaluating as well as refusing the standards of beauty.
