Vol.2017 No.1

Periodic markets, which have been playing the role of the central place in various activities of the Korean rural societies, are undergoing a change of their nature in accordance with the drastic economic growth since 1960's. In this paper, the writer attempted to understand the developmental history, general characteristics and spatial structures of periodic markets. This study was mainly based upon various kinds of literature and statistics, and special attentions were given to the Sam-Nam area, composed of the southern six provinces. The result can be summarized as the following. The beginning of the periodic markets in the traditional rural society can be traced up to the nonperiodic markets of the Koryo Dynasty, that is, Hyang-shi. Some time prior to the middle of the Lee Dynasty, these markets appear to have developed into such periodic markets as those of today, and the total number of the markets in entire Korea reached above one thousand in 1770. Korean periodic markets were fluctuation in their number under the inffluence of social and economic conditions. Their number decreased slightly since 1770 to approximately 847 shortly after the beginning of the 20th century, but increased again since then until 1962, when South Korea alone had 1,093 markets scattered throughout the country. During the last 10-year period, the markets show a tendency of decrease. Periodic markets of the Sam-Nam area show a high density along the lowlands of large rivers. Such lowlands have a high value of threshold population. According to the result of the analysis based upon the Christaller's central place theory, the lowlands along the Naktong River have three hierarchial levels of markets with k-value of 1,3 and 8, and the lowlands of the Kum River, the same three levels with k-value of 1,2, and 6. However, the distributional pattern of the periodic markets is changing because of the increasing tendency of peasant's utilization of the larger intermediate and regional markets rather than the smaller ones, which are located close to them. It was made possible by the enhancement of the peasant's standard of living and the improvement of public transportation means since late 1950's. As a result, it is expected that the traditional periodic markets gradually disappear, and only the higher central markets will survive and grow as the central place with multiple services.
Data for EIA and Its Presentation in Korea
Vol.2 No.2
Increasing concern for the environment in Korea has led to the demand that major policies and large-scale development projects be subjected to detailed impact assessment. This paper reports on the state of data related to the prediction of the environmental impact (EIA) to emphasize the importance of data quality. Environmental impact statements (EIS) consulted with the Ministry of Environment of Korea were analyzed from 1981 through 1992. Many of assessors used existing data and collected supplementary data from field survey. Most of the results of EIA are presented directly or summarized on maps and as graphics. For the national purpose, large source of quality-controlled data such as atmospheric data have been developed, However, there are the deficiency in data to analyze the impact of human activity, and data gaps and incompatibilities among systems. Consequently, the development of data bank systems including computer database and remotely-sensed satellite data is required to improve the quality of data which are relevant to EIA. The data bank system should be organized meaningfully in minimum time with a least cost, and measurement standards must be made explicit. Geographical information systems (GIS) are applicable to the graphic presentation or to the impact prediction model.
