Vol.15 No.2

The purpose of this paper is to measure the amount of new demand and provide useful implications for developing distribution strategies by products to cope with the changes such as bancassurance and fierce competition among channels. Face-to-face interview and homogeneity analysis are employed. The implications are summarized as followed: Firstly, it may recommend to use the traditional channel as a main channel and also develop the direct marketing as a supplementary channel in the automobile market. Secondly, it is need for insurance companies to have a professional capacity of the traditional channel in the whole life market in which a competition between the life insurance companies and banks increase. Thirdly, it is expected to expand the market size of health insurance enormously. It may suggest that insurance companies need to establish a channel providing professional services such as diversified benefits and health risk control in order to get competitive advantages in the market. Finally, the most competition between insurance companies and banks may be observed in the personal annuity market. It may recommend for insurance companies to utilize their product advantages already held.

Vol.6 No.-

On October 11 of 1996 Korea becomes a 29th momber of the Organisation of Economic Co-operation and Development(OECD) which is a "prestigious club" of developed countries discussing economic policies of its member countries. Due to the increase of the GNP following the rapid economic development, the Korean insurance business has recorded an annual growth rate of 30%, This growth, however, is based more or less on quantity rather than quality, and thus, the economic agents such as insurers, agents, solicitors and policyholders, are far less mature and their behaviors less sophisticated compared with those of developed countries. Therefore, Korea has been focusing on quality advancement of the insurance industry in implementing governmental insurance policies. By joining in the OECD, Korea can achieve following goals; (1) continuing deregulations to promote antonomy, responsibility and fair competition within the industry; (2) updating insurance-related laws and regulations to enhance liberalization and globalization; (3) helping consumers to better understand insurance by protection the rights of policyholders and strengthening other insurance services. However, as a member of the OECD, Korea should take various responsibilities such as complying with the basic principles of the OECD, which are progressive liberalization, non-discrimination and national treatment, and liberalization codes regarding current invisible operations and capital movements. In order for insurance-related parties to better understand the OECD and cope with changes in the Korean insurance industry following the accession to the OECD, this article presents the basic characteristics and principles of the OECD and some important items of Liberalization Codes which could affect the Korean insurance industry most. In addition, some strategies that can be implemented by Korean insurance companies are proposed.

Vol.17 No.2

This study analyzes the characteristics of the Korean silver class and the effects of the changes in the characteristics of the Korean silver class on the Korean silver industry. Till now, Korean silver class has been regarded as a uniform and monolithic group classified only by age and the Korean silver industry has been neglected as an unprofitable market. However, as the population of the Korean silver class with higher educations increases rapidly and the economic power of the Korean silver class improves greatly, the Korean silver industry emerges as a potential market for a good chance of success. Furthermore, the silver class begins to be recognized as a diversified group with very different needs. This study shows that the Korean silver class has various needs according to the health condition, age, family status, the level of wealth, etc, and therefore, Korean insurers should consider those characteristics of the Korean silver class in order to enter into the Korean silver industry successfully.

Vol.11 No.-

The objective of this study is to present important factors to be considered to establish the direction of the future employee benefit system in Korea based on the analysis of the well-developed employee benefit system of the U. S. A. In the U. S. A, the employee benefit system has been well developed due to the reconciliation between the strong willingness of employers to introduce and expand employee benefits programs and favorable tax treatments by the United States government. The remarkable point is that the United States government has limited its role to creating useful environment for the development of employee benefits programs by policy-making such as granting favorable tax treatments whereas employers and employees have played an active role in designing, developing and expanding employee benefits programs by working together. Therefore, in establishing the direction of the future employee benefit system in Korea, focus should be on the construction and expansion of employee benefits programs through voluntary consultation between employers and employees, the expansion of more favorable tax treatment by the government and the development of various employee benefits programs in order to meet diversified needs of employees. In addition, environmental changes such as the advent of an aging population, the balance of the work and family due to the increase in working single-parent families and dual-income families and the introduction of flexible benefits plants or cafeteria plans to enhance the flexibility of employee benefits programs should be considered.
