Many of the 19th-century English writers were critical of the Industrial Revolution These writers, convinced their industrial society was far from true human life, had formed a critical tradition against industrial civilization throughout the nineteenth century. Matthew Arnold and William Morris were two of the major thinkers in the tradition. Arnold attacked the irresponsible materialism and narrow individualism with which Victorian society had been suffused after the Industrial Revolution. He tried to improve his vulgar society through an ideal of 'culture' as the harmonious perfection of humanity. Arnold's disinterested vision and earnest practice, however, was not free of idealism and ideological defects. Morris, who hated modern industrial civilization more than any other nineteenth-century writer, reinforced the critical tradition in a practical dimension. He suggested socialist revolution as a possible way to sweep away all the vices of industrial society and achieve the true human life in our world. However, Morris's utopian vision was not supported by deep comprehensive insights into human nature, which was necessary for the critical tradition to keep fighting against the increasing destructive forces of industrial civilization.

본 연구는 최근 국내 도입이 추진되고 있는 궤도교통수단인 트램이 일반교통류와 도로를 공유했을 때 발생할 수 있는 문제를 예상하고, 트램운영의 효율성과 안정성을 확보할 수 있는 신호운영 전략과 통합 신호운영이 가능한 신호제어기 시작품을 개발하는데 연구의 목적이 있다. 통합 신호운영을 위해 고정식 트램 우선신호와 능동식 트램 우선신호를 포함한 3단계의유기적인 통합 신호제어 전략을 수립하였고, 각 단계별 전략수행을 위한 신호운영 알고리즘을 개발하였다. 개발된 신호제어알고리즘을 S/W로 구현하고, 표준 신호제어기에 기반한 H/W로 제작하였고, 이를 평가하기 위한 통합 신호제어 시뮬레이터(Hardware in the Loop Simulation system: HILS)를 개발하였다. 미시적 시뮬레이션 프로그램을 통해 통합 신호제어 전략의효과와 개발된 통합 신호제어기의 성능을 평가한 결과, 본 연구를 통해 개발된 신호제어 알고리즘으로 산출한 교차로 신호시간이 트램차량의 신호교차로 정지수와 통행시간을 감소시켰음을 확인하였고, 트램 우선신호에 따른 일반차량의 지체증가가 거의 나타나지 않음을 확인하였다. 또한 통합 신호제어 시뮬레이터를 통해 개발된 통합 신호제어기의 H/W와 S/W의기능 수행 여부을 확인하였다. In recent years, tram has been the focus of a new mode of public transportation that can solve traffic jams and decreasepublic transit usage and environmental problem. This research is in the works to develop a tram signal controller and signalcontrol strategies, and aim to resolve the problem of what could happen if a tram system was installed in general road. Wedeveloped the hierarchical signal control strategies to obtain a minimum tram bandwidth and to minimize vehicle delay, inorder to perform a priority control to include passive and active signal priority control strategies. The strategies wasproduced for S/W and H/W, it is based in standard traffic signal controller. We conducted a micro simulation test toevaluate the hierarchical signal control strategies, which showed that the developed optimization model is effective toprevent a tram's stop in intersection, to reduce a tram's travel time and vehicle's delay.
