        Phonological Aspects of American and British Englishes Embedded in Korean English: A Perspective of Linguistic Realities

        This paper explores the rationale behind the shift from Quirk’s deficit linguistics to Kachru’s liberation linguistics in English widely used in Korea. Despite the Korean government’s efforts to enhance communicative competence aligned with Inner Circle-oriented American Standard English, the study questions the perception of Korean English being solely dominated by American English from sociolinguistic perspectives. To delve into both psychological and empirical perspectives on English in Korea, a questionnaire survey involving 100 Korean college students is employed. The focus is on assessing the extent of influence from both American English and British English on Korean English. Additionally, the study examines how linguistic realities, disregarding sociolinguistic or functional aspects, contribute to the current state of Korean English. The analysis of survey data reveals that Korean linguistics, especially phonology, plays a role in shaping the dynamics of Korean English, supporting Kachru’s liberation linguistics. This contributes to the shift from the stage of aspiring to be more native-like American English to the stage of World Englishes, establishing itself as a variant of English in its own right.

        Evaluation of sensitivity of soil respiration to temperature in different forest types and developmental stages of maturity using the incubation method

        To calculate and predict soil carbon budget and cycle, it is important to understand the complex interrelationships involved in soil respiration rate (Rs). We attempted to reveal relationships between Rs and key environmental factors, such as soil temperature, using a laboratory incubation method. Soil samples were collected from mature deciduous (MD),mature coniferous (MC), immature deciduous (ID), and immature coniferous (IC) forests. Prior to measure, soils were pre-incubated for 3 days at 25°C and 60% of maximum water holding capacity (WHC). Samples of gasses were collected with 0, 2, and 4 h interval after the beginning of the measurement at soil temperatures of 5, 15, 25, and 35°C (at 60% WHC). Air samples were collected using a syringe attached to the cap of closed bottles that contained the soil samples. The CO2concentration of each gas sample was measured by gas chromatography. Rs was strongly correlated with soil temperature (r, 0.93 to 0.96; P < 0.001). For MD, MC, ID, and IC soils taken from 0-5 cm below the surface, exponential functions explained 90%, 82%, 92%, and 86% of the respective data plots. The temperature and Rs data for soil taken from 5-10 cm beneath the surface at MD, MC, ID, and IC sites also closely fit exponential functions, with 83%, 95%, 87%, and 89% of the data points, respectively, fitting an exponential curve. The soil organic content in mature forests was significantly higher than in soils from immature forests (P < 0.001 at 0-5 cm and P < 0.005 at 5-10 cm) and surface layer (P = 0.04 at 0-5 cm and P = 0.12). High soil organic matter content is clearly associated with high Rs, especially in the surface layer. We determined that the incubation method used in this study have the possibility for comprehending complex characteristic of Rs.

        도시 및 농어촌 초등학생 학부모의 음악교육에 대한 태도 및 교육지원행위에 관한 연구:공교육 및 사교육의 차이를 중심으로

        본 연구는 도시와 농어촌 지역 초등학생 학부모들이 음악교육에 대해 갖는 태도와 교육지원행위의 차이점을 파악하고, 공교육과 사교육의 차이를 중심으로 음악교육 지원에 긍정적 영향을 미치는 요인을 파악하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 학부모 172명을 대상으로 학부모의 음악교육에 대한 태도 및 교육지원행위의 차이점을 양적 연구 도구를 사용하여 분석하고, 음악 교육지원을 위한 긍정요인을 알아보기 위해 6명의 학부모를 대상으로 심층 인터뷰를 실시하여 다음과 같은 결론을 얻었다. 첫째, 지역에 따라 음악 사교육 및 공교육에 비용을 지불하는 학부모 비율에 유의미한 차이가 있었다. 둘째, ‘학교 음악교육에 대한 만족도’, ‘연간 음악 공연 관람 횟수’, ‘교내외 음악 활동 개수’에서 두 지역 간 유의미한 차이가 나타났다. 셋째, 학부모들은 저렴한 비용, 꾸준함, 즐기는 분위기가 공교육의 긍정요인이라고 생각하는 반면, 효율성과 효과성을 사교육의 긍정요인으로 생각하는 것으로 나타났다. This study aims to identify differences in parental attitudes and involvement in music education in urban and rural elementary schools, and to explore factors that have a positive impact on music education support, focusing on differences between public and private music education. Results from a survey of 172 parents were analyzed by quantitative research tools to identify differences in parents' attitudes toward music education and parental involvement. In-depth interviews were conducted with 6 parents to find out positive factors for music education support. First, there was a significant difference in the ratio of parents who pay for private education and public education between two areas. Second, there were significant differences between the two regions in ‘satisfaction with school music education’, ‘the number of concerts attendance per a year’ and ‘the number of music activities inside and outside of school.’ Third, parents think of low cost, consistency, and enjoying atmosphere as positive factors for public education, while efficiency and effectiveness as positive factors for private education.

        Effect of iron on the proteolytic activity of live Uronema marinum (Ciliata: Scoticociliatida) measured by fluorescence polarization

        Effect of iron on the extracellular proteolytic activity of live Uronema marium was determined by fluorescence polarization (FP) method. Supplementation of 0.5 and 5.0 μM iron significantly increased caseinolytic activity of live U. marinum. In contrast, supplementation of 50 μM iron showed no significant differences in FP values compared to the control. The present result suggests that iron in cultured water or skin tissue of olive flounder may influence on the penetration and establishment of U. marinum, correlating with modulation of extracellular protease activity of the ciliates.

        한국대학생의 영작 능력과 문법 지식 간의 상관관계 연구

        This study aims to figure out the relationship between writing competence and grammatical knowledge. Recently, the importance of practical English competence has been emphasized more and more, and we can see a movement towards the improvement of English writing skills. Compared to other language skills, writing has not been given much attention by instructors because giving writing instructions is not easy, and the assessment of writing is also not a simple process. Therefore, learners have not had many opportunities for practicing their writing skills. When it comes to writing, learners need to generate ideas, organize their thoughts, choose the proper vocabulary, and complete the writing assignment with coherence. In addition, there are many aspects of writing such as spelling, mechanics, organization and content. Learners are required to master various characteristics of writing to complete their essay. Among those factors, learners have difficulty in applying grammatical rules, leading to a lack of motivation for writing. Therefore, the objective of this study is to highlight the relationship between writing competence and grammatical knowledge through correlation analysis. For the study, 108 students who took a writing course at university were asked to take a grammar test, and they completed ten writing activities over the course of one semester. An analysis of correlation was conducted using SPSS 21 Version and further discussion was introduced. 본 연구는 영작문 능력에 영향을 미치는 다양한 요소들 중에 문법 지식과의 상관관계가 있는지 알아보기 위해 진행되었다. 최근 실용적인 영어 역량에 대한 요구가 증가하고 있고 영어쓰기 능력을 향상시키고자 하는 움직임이 나타나고 있다. 학습자에게 다른 언어기능과 비교했을 때 작문은 상대적으 로 학습기회가 적었고 학습자가 글을 쓰기 위해 준비해야 하는 다양한 요소를 학습하지 못해 어려움을 겪었다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 특히 학습자들이 어려워하는 문법지식에 초점을 두어 문법 지식과 영작문 능력 간의 상관관계를 알아보고 그에 따른 결과를 제시하고자 한다. 연구 참여자는 부산 소재 대학교에서 작문 수업을 듣는 108명으로 구성되었으며 문법 지식을 측정하기 위한 시험을 실시하였고, 영작문 능력을 측정하기 위해 한 학기에 걸쳐 작문 활동을 하였던 열 편의 작문 자료를 바탕으로 결과를 분석하였다. 작문 활동은 유형에 따라 통제작문 2회와 유도 작문 2회, 자율 작문 6회로 실시하였다. 자료 분석을 위해서 SPSS 21 Version이 사용되었고 상관관계 분석을 활용하였으며, 영작문 능력에 따라 상 수준의 집단과 하 수준의 집단으로 나누어 상관관계 양상을 세부적으로 분석하였다. 마지막으로 작문유형에 따라 상관관계의 정도가 차이를 나타내는지를 분석하고 그 결과에 대해 논의하였다. 연구 참여자들의 작문 활동의 점수와 문법 지식 간의 상관관계는 높지는 않았지만 어느 정도의 상관관계 (r=.568)는 갖는 것으로 나타났다. 두 집단으로 나누어 분석한 결과 하 수준의 집단에서는 높은 상관관계 (r=.718)가 나타났고, 작문유형과 문법 지식의 상관관계 역시 모든 수준의 집단에서 상관성이 높지 않은 것으로 나타났다.

        COVID-19 팬데믹 전․후의 대학 교양영어 연구 동향 분석 - Topic Modeling 활용 -

        This study compared research trends in universities general English program before and after the COVID-19 pandemic. After analyzing 248 articles from KCI using frequency analysis, centrality analysis, and topic modeling, this study found consistent keywords indicating a focus on learning objectives, effectiveness analysis, satisfaction surveys, and level-based learning before and after the COVID-19 pandemic. Centrality analysis revealed keywords like “teaching, research, analysis” before COVID-19 and “satisfaction, study, level, activity, effect” after COVID-19, indicating a shift towards learner satisfaction, level-based learning, and effectiveness analysis due to the transition to online learning. Topic modeling revealed shifts in research trends: Pre-COVID-19 focused on effective teaching methods, evaluation techniques, and cultural content, while Post-COVID-19 prioritized online teaching methods, web-based platforms, and selfdirected learning. Future research should address self-directed learning, attitudes and goal setting, closing learning gaps in online/blended learning, and developing effective online assessment tools and evaluation strategies. This study provides valuable insights and directions for further research in general English programs.
