Learnability Effects on the Placement of English Stress in Morphologically Derived Words

        이신숙 한국응용언어학회 2007 응용 언어학 Vol.23 No.1

This paper investigated Korean learners’ acquisition of English stress in morphologically derived words in order to find out whether the learners acquire English word stress as a lexical phenomenon or as a rule-governed phenomenon and whether they benefit from training on the English stress system. For that purpose, 29 university students’ perception and production of primary stress in 32 real and 32 nonce words were examined. The results seemed to indicate that the learners learn stress placement in English not only as a rule-governed phenomenon but also as a lexical phenomenon. Importantly, the participants’ performance on stress placement significantly improved in both perception (pre-test 76.38% vs. post-test 89,01%) and production (pre-test 55.39% vs. post-test 82.38%) as a result of four sessions of training. The results also revealed that the precedence of perception over production was confirmed in L2 stress acquisition, but the learners’ pronunciation difficulties were related to their imperfect perception of the target sounds only at the post-test. Moreover, suffix class (class 1 vs. class 2), and lexical category (noun vs. adjective) were shown to play a role in accounting for the overall results, even though there was no effect of word type (real vs. nonce). Patterns of lexical variation were also described and pedagogical implications for L2 English stress were drawn based on the results.

Perception and Production of consonant Clusters by Korean Learners of English

        이신숙,초미희 한국영어영문학회 2005 영어 영문학 Vol.51 No.5

This paper examines the relationship between perception and production of English consonant clusters by Korean learners of English in order to investigate whether L2 learners' (or foreign language learners') pronunciation abilities lag behind their perceptual abilities or whether their pronunciation difficulties are closely related to their perceptional defect of the target sounds. Overall, the results of the experiment have shown that the correct percentage of production (62%) was a little bit higher than that of perception (58%). This result supports the findings obtained by Sheldon and Strange (1982) with Japanese learners' acquisition of English /l/ and /r/, in that Japanese learners' production skills preceded their perceptual skills. However, it has been shown that this unexpected result interacts with syllable positions, consonant cluster types, as well as the number of clusters. Moreover, the markedness hypothesis has been shown to be influenced not only by the number of clusters but also by the types of clusters, as the error rate of biconsonantal clusters was much higher than that of triconsonantal clusters in the word-initial position in production due to the presence of more marked biconsonantal fricatives. Furthermore, it has been suggested that some of second (foreign) language learners' perceived forms and/or lexical forms of the foreign words may not be target-appropriate and that both perception and production may develop gradually. The paper has also investigated the learner variability in terms of the perception and production relationship. Specifically, the participants are subdivided into four different groups, depending on their perception and production abilities and a schematic optimality-theoretic analysis of the learner variability patterns has been offered in terms of the interactions among faithfulness constraints in perception and production, along with markedness constraints. In specific, it has been shown that for the learners whose production abilities precede their perception abilities orthography influences the lexical representation of a target item, and consequently recognizing the role of orthography in second (foreign) language acquisition. The Perceptual Interaction between Schwa Deletion and English Phonotactic Constraints

        이신숙 한국언어학회 2011 언어 Vol.36 No.3

Lee, Shinsook. 2011. The Perceptual Interaction between Schwa Deletion and English Phonotactic Constraints. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 36-3, 699-733. This study explored the perceptual interaction between schwa deletion and English phonotactic constraints by conducting syllable-count experiments on native English speakers and Korean and Japanese learners of English, using English nonce word stimuli. The results of both response accuracy and latency showed that English speakers were abel to discriminate between legal and illegal onset clusters in English resulting from schwa deletion, regardless of the number of the syllables of the stimuli. However, Korean and Japanese learners of English were not sensitive to English phonotactic constraints on legal vs. illegal onset sequences created by schwa deletion. Similarly, English speakers' perception of illegal onsets resulting from schwa deletion conformed to the predictions of the sonority-based onset markedness in that their perception of onsets of sonority rises was more accurate and faster than sonority levels and falls in order. On the contrary, Korean and Japanese learners of English displayed a partial sensitivity to the onset-markedness, as the mean accuracy of sonority plateaus was higher than that of sonority rises and as the number of the syllables of the stimulus items also affected the general results. Overall, the results indicate that English phonotactic restrictions as well as the sonority-driven onset-markedness play a role in the perception of onset sequences resulting from schwa deletion. The implications of the results for speech perception, markedness, and lexical representation were further discussed. (Korea University)

The interface between perception and production in L2 English vowels

        이신숙,초미희 한국현대언어학회 2018 언어연구 Vol.34 No.3

The study explores the interface between perception and production in L2 English vowels focusing on the precedence relationship and the correlation between perception and production. To that end, 34 Korean EFL learners identified 12 English vowels presented in the bVt word structure and their productions of the same English vowels were identified by native English speakers. The results revealed that overall the precedence relationship of perception over production was attested but not across all the target vowels. The results also showed that similar error patterns were observed in perception and production for the same vowels. However, no correlation was found between perception and production, suggesting that L2 speech perception and production may not develop in tandem. The findings of the study are discussed in light of L2 learning, especially in light of the development of L2 perception and production skills.
