Ca(NO₃)²·4H₂O and (NH₄)₂·HPO₄were used in this work as starting materials. The hydroxy apatite powder was prepared by the precipitation method and precipitates were sintered at 1100℃∼1300℃ for 1hr. The effects of the ratio of calcium to phosphate in raw materials and sintering temperature on the mechanical properties of hydroxy apatite were investigated in order to determind the optimum conditions of method for preparing dense, sintered hydroxy apatite as a implant materials. Hydroxy apatite prepared by precipitation method was Ca-deficient hydroxy apatite with Ca/p mole ratio less than 1.67. As the Ca/p mole ratio in the initial raw materials was increased, the specific surface area of precipitates was increased and particle size of those was decreased. In the Ca/p mole ratio of 1.55, the decomposition of hydroxy apatite began at 800℃. Above the Ca/p mole ratio of 1.75, the reason for incomplete densification may be the formation of aggromerates. Thus, in order to increase the strength of hydroxy apatite was impregnated MMA. MMA impregnated hydroxy apatite had remarkably high relative density and low apparent porosity.
