The Rainbow에 나타난 Narrative Technique과 문체의 특징
李錫長 한국영어교육연구학회 2001 영어교육연구 Vol.- No.23
In The Rainbow, Lawrence extended the domain of Ursula's self-awareness by treating profoundly the analytical technique of modern consciousness. He also made use of a cyclic technique of image in order to describe the action and emotion of the main characters, of which the repetition and cumulation came into being from the imitation of the changing process in the natural world and of its rhythm. Lawrence's description of blood and flesh introduced the rhythmical cadence which was in accord with his syntax of artistic language, and this cadence arose from a variety of rhythm in the natural world. Lawrence frequently made use of physical and chemical images such as combustion and consummation in order to describe the non-human element or the element of process of characters. The technique which shows the actions streaming out of the language of process and down the surface of consciousness reaches the climax in the last moonlight scenes of the Ursula-Skrebensky story. The mimetic technique which describes the repetition of tension and release toward a certain apex is attended with a unique swelling cadence. The opposing terms such as the vertical and horizontal directions or the centrifugal and centripetal forces stand for the nature of polarity based on Lawrence's dualism.
