In Korean society the abuse of animals such as deserted animals, euthanasia, mass cull due to foot-and-mouth disease raise the issue. This paper investigates the relationship between humans and animals and makes a search for the responsibility, rights and care of animals. Feminists have responsed to the pain of animals and participated in the rescue of animals on the basis of the critical mind that the western development and androcentrism transformed and distorted the relationship between women, nature, and animals. The method of the research conducted both the investigations of the literature research and the field work. The field work carried out the participant observation and the interviews with the manager Lek and the members of the staff in the case of thailand. Thai people have respected elephants, but they have regarded elephants as the means of making money since the modern age. Therefore, elephants have suffered from logging, trekking, circus, begging, and business. Lek, the founder of ENP, has rescued the injured elephants on the basis of emotional solidarity with animals and the ecological sensitivity of hill tribe and Buddist culture. Her insight heals and restores the relation between animals and humans, distorted by the violence and domination of the humans. The care of animals needs the responsibility of humans. When humans listen to the animals’ need in their position, the bond can be strengthened and the relationship can change equally.

This study explores how the sexual discourse of the elderly has been constructed and circulated in Korean society from a feminist perspective. The sexual discourse resists the sexual taboo and prejudice against the elderly in traditional culture and insists the sexual right for the elderly. It however needs to be critically questioned whether the elderly women’s experiences and sexual desire are reflected in this discourse of sexuality of the elderly. This study analyses the sexual discourse of the elderly through the various materials of media, such as newspapers, magazines, movies and TV programs. As a result of the research, it is found that the sexual discourse of the elderly has mainly focused on the men’s sexual activities and biological function in terms of sexual health. It ignores the multiplicity of the sexuality in the context of relationships including emotional interests, mutual interaction and gender differences. While the men’s sexual desire becomes more recognizable and active until the old age, it even justifies the commercial sex and sexual violence performed by man. In short, male-oriented sexual discourse of the elderly contributes to reenforce the male-dominated sexual culture in Korean society. Deconstructing the discourse of sexuality of the elderly from the elderly women’s position means to produce the counter sexual discourse considering sexuality as multiple pleasure, relationship, intimacy, slowness, and vitality that is able to be a challenge against androcentric and heterosexual culture.

This research considers the discourses of fatherhood through media analysis, recognizing the change in child-rearing attitudes of men in Korean society. These discourses stress that the paternal involvement affects the growth of children in terms of the entire person’s education. However, the discourses can be burdensome and produce a backlash by making men manage both work and family on the individual level, rather than raising the value of care. The discourses also result in discrimination against diverse families, by reinforcing the ideal of the nuclear family and the normal family, what is regarded as ‘happy family’. In this context, alternative discourses should be reconstructed, beyond the family egoism and exclusive care. First, the discourses should create an atmosphere to take account of child-rearing in the labor culture, and stand up for childcare policy. When child-rearing is interpreted on the institutional level, the double burden can be solved. Second, these discourses should go beyond the genetic bond and take care of underprivileged children and protect against violence. In the process, the discourses can change the androcentric culture of competition, domination, and violence, and correct social injustice by expanding the value of care.

This paper suggests that we should do feminist studies on death as well as on the area of reproduction technology from the point of view of bioethics. This paper examines cases of euthanasia and the process of women patients" decision on death in the context of the relationships among doctor, family members and women patients. It also discusses the concrete and specific contexts of women patients. Women patients are unequal in the relationship of a patient to doctor-as-an-expert, and also are vulnerable in the relationship of family members as proxy. However, to represent women patients as victims of the internalized image of self-sacrifice results in the exclusion of women patients from the decision of death. Women patients make the best choice for themselves in consideration of others. To reveal women"s sociocultural context in such a decision on death shows us women"s agency negotiating with and changing the patriarchal medical environment.

This research analyzed the gendered context in the travel through old women’s experiences and explored the plans to raise its accessibility. This research investigated what has restricted travel for old women’s lives and how old women have constructed relationships with others and experienced the change of self-recognition through in-depth interview. Under the gender segregation, women have much less chances for travel than men. Middle-class housewives participated in family travel as taking the gender role but they are in conflict with gender role in the travel, except for the family travel, due to care and expenses. Nevertheless, the women experienced the independence and liberation, and they are empowered by being healed and comforted through the travel with friends. Everyone has the right to travel, but the research participants are marginalized from travel, due to economic resources, the division of time, English ability and searching for information. Research participants tried to overcome the physical aging, but they planned the travel under the autonomy. They didn’t plan travel subjectively by relying on the package tour. Plans of intergenerational women’s travel, consulting about free travel, information and English education, and care travel should be supported to raise the accessibility of travel for old women.

The sexual discourses on old people in Korean society have been too biased towards the male-centric domain to reflect the voices of old women. This research aims to produce the alternatives of sexual discourse by considering sexuality and love of old women represented in the movies. This research inquired the sexual agency of old women in the 20 movies screened in Korea on the theme of old people’s sex and love from 2008 to 2011. In the movies, the myth of old couple as ‘lifetime companion’ shows the side effect of gender segregation. This represents the reality that old husbands depend on wives and cannot survive after death of wives. On the one hand, it is natural that women should play the gender role to look after husbands, it is well appreciated caring of men as devoted love in the movies. Meanwhile, old women were represented as not only the victims, sexually ignorant and passive existence, but also resisting existence against the sexual norm of the patriarchy and positively express their desire. Old women were rewarded when they adapted themselves to the patriachal sexual norm but represented as dangerous women when they desired younger men. Nevertheless, Old women make a decision in the independent and subjective way beyond the myth of romantic love and they show the way of gender-equal love and sexuality, based on consideration and respect. This suggest the alternatives of the present sexual discourse on old people to ignore the women’s pain and objectify women for sexual pleasure of men.

Who has cared for the disabled in Korean society and how has the care been supported by institutional framework? The aim of this paper is to examine the gender role and the responsibility expected from the mothers of the disabled children in the media and to consider the care system for the disabled in Korean society. This research analysed the articles from the newspapers and the magazines and the multi-media data from the movies and broadcasting from January 2005 to April 2010. In the discourses of the motherhood, the mothers of the disabled are represented as the people who feel overwhelmed by pressure for care. In Korean society, women care for the disabled children as mother’s role and responsibility. While this discourse sympathizes with mother’s pain and praises the maternal love, people do not discuss how to share the caring role. However, these women reveal the passive and self-giving image, and at the same time they are represented as the helper in the myth of disability conquest and the resister of disability discrimination. Nevertheless, they should continue to care for the adult children, change the plan of life, and are in conflict with the family members. While the care for the disabled child is the responsibility of the mother, the care is devalued in Korean society. The systematization of care for the disabled means the share of mother’s care in the level of the society. The capability approach and independent life movement can be the alternative of care. Also, we should produce the discourses that the care for the disabled does not set limits to the motherhood and the value of care is socially extended.
Vol.5 No.1
Tourism has been criticized for making a profit by destroying the local environment and culture, as well as exploiting the labor of the locals. The business of ecotourism sets a high value on the relationship between visitors and local people, and it pursues equal profit sharing with local people. '3 Sisters Adventure Trekking', a Nepali company of ecotourism, has taught and employed female trekking guides. This research project considers how local women s relationship are constructed in Nepali ecotourism and how women s friendship and solidarity influence their lives, focusing on '3 Sisters'. Both literature research and in-depth interviews were implemented. Although women managers started as a family business, they dedicated themselves to the empowerment of women and raising awareness of their situation by taking care of women in need and offering education and labor. Students of EWN and guides make women managers good role models and help one another by learning and working together. Nepali ecotourism examined through '3 Sisters' produces an independent space for women based on women s friendship and solidarity.
