경량화용 Al/CFRP 원형부재의 적층각에 따른 충격압궤특성
이길성(Kilsung Lee),양인영(Inyoung Yang) 대한기계학회 2005 대한기계학회 춘추학술대회 Vol.2005 No.5
An aluminum or CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics) tube is representative light-weight materials but its axial collapse mechanism is different from each other. The aluminum tube absorbs energy by stable plastic deformation, while the CFRP tube absorbs energy by unstable brittle failure with higher specific strength and stiffness than those in the aluminum tube. In an attempt to achieve a synergy effect by combining the two members, aluminum/CFRP circular tubes were manufactured, which are composed of aluminum tubes wrapped with CFRP outside aluminum circular tubes with different fiber orientation angle of CFRP, and impact collapse tests were performed for the tubes. The collapse characteristics of the tubes were analyzed.

The purpose of this study was to develop lightweight hat shaped section side members which absorb the most of the energy during the front-end collision of vehicle. The hat shaped section members consist of the spot welded member which was utilized to an actual vehicle, the CFRP member and the hybrid member for lightweight of vehicle structural member. The spot welded member was made of SCP1 cold rolled steel sheet and the CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced plastics) member was made of CFRP prepreg sheet. The hybrid member was manufactured by combination of aluminum and CFRP. The hat shaped section members were tested under static axial loading by universal testing machine. Energy absorption capability and collapse mode of the members were analyzed and compared.

Aluminum members under axial load absorb energy through sustained plastics deformation. However, CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics) members absorb energy through uneven brittle failure. On the other hand, CFRP has higher specific stiffness and specific strength as compared to aluminum members. This study examines collapse characteristics of aluminum composite compound structural member. Since CFRP is an anisotropic material, its collapse characteristics change according to orientation. Therefore, CFRP collapse characteristics have been evaluated against orientation angle and thickness. Collapse mode of the combined CFRP aluminum member has been determined by orientation angle of the CFRP where it was steadily collapsed under high load. In addition, it was demonstrated that energy absorption is dependent upon orientation angle and thickness.

Aluminum materials have been widely used in various vehicle structures. If composite materials are applied to vehicle structures, it is expected that not only the weight of the vehicle is decreased but also it absorb large amounts of energy. Aluminum tubes are lower than CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics) tubes in the collapse load but absorb energy by stable plastic deformation. On the other hand, CFRP tubes are higher than aluminum tubes in the collapse load but absorb energy by unstable brittle failure. The combination of aluminum and composite may result in stable deformation and excellent energy absorption efficiency. The compressive axial collapse tests were performed to investigate collapse characteristics of Al/CFRP compound tubes which are aluminum tubes wrapped with CFRP outside the aluminum circular and square tubes. Based on collapse characteristics of aluminum tubes and CFRP tubes respectively, the axial collapse tests were performed for Al/CFRP compound tubes which have different CFRP orientation angles. Test results showed that Al/CFRP compound tubes supplemented the unstable brittle failure of CFRP tubes due to ductile nature of inner aluminum tubes. In the light-weight aspect, Absorbed energy per unit mass of circular tubes was higher than square tubes'. Absorbed energy per unit mass showed highest when CFRP orientation angle was 90 degrees.

This study is to investigate the collapse characteristics of CFRP(Carbon-Fiber Reinforced Plastics) side member on static tests. Currently, stacking condition related to the collapse characteristics of composite materials is being considered as an issue for the structural efficiency and safety of automobiles, aerospace vehicles, trains, ships even elevators during collision. In particular, CFRP composite materials have found wide applicability because of their inherent design flexibility and improved materials properties. The most important objective in designing automobiles is Currently to focus on environment-friendly aspect and safety performance aspect. In this study, CFRP side members with single-hat-section shaped were manufactured. The axial static collapse tests were performed for the members using universal testing machine, and the collapse mode and energy absorption capability were analyzed according to stacking condition.

The impact collapse characteristics of the members were analyzed.

In this study, the Al/CFRP structural members which are composed of square shaped aluminum members wrapped with CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics) outside were manufactured to get a synergy effect when the Al/CFRP member is combined with the advantages of each members, such as energy absorption by the stable folding deformation of the aluminum member and by the high specific strength and stiffness of the CFRP member. The impact collapse tests were performed for the Al/CFRP members. Because the CFRP is an anisotropic material whose mechanical properties, such as strength and elasticity, are changed with its fiber orientation angle, special attention was given to the effects of the fiber orientation angle of CFRP on the collapse characteristics of the Al/CFRP members.
