        Substance P and Calcitonin Gene-Related Peptide in the Glands of External Auditory Canal Skin

        Objectives. The earwax (cerumen) that covers external auditory canal (EAC) skin contains a mixture of ceruminous and sebaceous gland substances, such as lipids, peptides, and proteins. The components secreted from the ceruminous gland that is a modified sweat gland form cerumen and contain several antimicrobial factors. Since substance P (SP) and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), known as a secretagogue, have been found in sweat glands, our purpose was to determine the expression of SP and CGRP in the glands of EAC skin. Methods. Sections of normal human EAC skins were immunostained for the presence of SP and CGRP using polyclonal antibodies. Immunoreactivity was detected using an avidin-biotin peroxidase complex method. Results. SP staining was found in ceruminous gland acini and myoepithelial cells. But the SP staining was not found in the sebaceous glands and epidermal region. CGRP was strongly stained in the ceruminous gland and weakly in the sebaceous gland cells. Interestingly, most prominent staining of SP and CGRP was noted in the myoepithelial cells of the ceruminous gland. Conclusion. The findings in this study suggest that SP and CGRP are expressed in the glands of the EAC skin and secreted in the process of ceruminous gland secretion.

      • Immunohistochemical Localization of Alpha-Atrial Natriuretic Polypeptide in the Human Nasal Polyp

        Background and Objectives:Alpha-atrial natriuretic polypeptide (ANP) is a peptide which is involved in the regulation offluid and electrolyte homeostasis. The purpose of this study is to localize ANP in the human nasal polyps by immunoperoxidaseand immunofluorescence methods. Materials and Methods:Polyps were obtained at routine polypectomy under local anesthesia,Sections were processed for immunocytochemical demonstration of ANP using the avidin -biotin -peroxidase complex(ABC) procedure and the FITC immunofluorescence technique. Results:ANP was detected in the surface epithelium ofnasal polyps. These apical cells stained deeply with ANP. In the stroma, ANP was confined to acinar cells in the mucosal glands. No immunoreaction was detected in either the goblet cells or the fibroblasts. Conclusion:The large number and wide spreaddistribution of ANP-immunoreactive cells in nasal polyps imply that ANP could be involved in their pathophysiology.

        A high jugular bulb is often discovered as an incidental finding that is asymptomatic. The incidence of high jugular bulb protru-ding into the level of oval window is rare. Conductive hearing loss in asociation with this anomaly may occur, but has been ch-anisms to explain the conductive hearing loss include contact of the jugular bulb with tympanic membrane, interference with the ossicular chain, and obstruction of the round and oval window niche. The operative findings, radiographic and audiometric data that support these mechanisms of couductive hearing loss are presented. (Korean J Otolaryngol 2002 ;45 :1184-7)

        PVDF/YBCO 삼단자 소자의 전계효과

        As an application of the High-$_C$ superconducting YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-\delta}$ (YBCO) thin film, a three-terminal device of PVDF (polyviny-lidene fluoride)/YBCO was success-fully fabricated and its electric field effect investigated. The 90-nm YBCO thin film was deposited by using pulsed laser deposition and the PVDF film was spin-coated on top of the superconductor. After fabrication, the superconductor's critical temperature was degraded to 81 K. The $\beta$ phase of the PVDF film, which has a larger dielectric constant than the other phases, was selectively formed and was characterized by using X-ray diffraction. Leakage current measurement show that submicron PVDF films had leakage currents at a few volts and that the PVDF film's proper thickness was $\sim$ 1 $\mu$m. As the gate voltage was increased, the critical temperature of YBCO decreased, indicating that the holes in the YBCO channel could be controlled by the electrical field effect of the PVDF gate. This is the first demonstration of a field effect device of PVDF/YBCO. 고온초전도 조셉슨 소자의 특성제어를 위해 PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride)/YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-\delta}$ (YBCO) 형태의 삼단자 소자를 제작하고 전계효과특성을 측정하였다. 펄스레이저 증착법으로 YBCO 박막을 제작하였고, 포토리소그라피법으로 패턴 후 YBCO 채널위에 PVDF 물질을 스핀코팅 하였다. 전계효과와 박막특성을 고려한 YBCO 박막의 두께는 90 nm이며, 임계온도는 80 K이었다. X선 회절측정과 누설전류 측정으로, 1 mmol의 농도로 제작된 PVDF 박막이 \beta$ 상으로 우선배향되어 있었으며 최소의 누설전류를 얻음을 알 수 있었다. 제작된 PVDF/YBCO 소자의 게이트 전극에 인가된 전압이 15 V인 경우 초기 임계온도 값과 1 K, 20 V인 경우 약 1.3 K의 변화가 있음을 알 수 있었다. 이는 PVDF의 전계효과로 YBCO 채널 내에서 존재하는 정공들을 조절할 수 있음을 증명하는 것이다.

      • Heterogeneous enantioselective hydrogenation over chirally modified Pt catalysts

        Homochirality of life on Earth has significant implications in the production of pharmaceutical compounds because the two enantiomers of chiral drugs can have different physiological impacts when they are ingested. Enantioselective heterogeneous catalysts can provide significant advantages in terms of easy separation from products and high reusability. The heterogeneous catalysts require chiral sites for enantiospecific interactions between reactants and metal particles. These can be easily created by the adsorption of a chiral compound onto the surfaces of metal particles. In this talk, I will present catalytic performances of heterogeneous Pt catalysts for enantioselective hydrogenation of α-ketoesters. The Pt catalysts have been successfully modified by cinchona alkaloids. In addition, I will discuss the influences of structural properties of supports and Pt content on the enantioselectivity of heterogeneous Pt catalysts.

        인간의 외이도 피부에서 비만세포 분포의 특징

        Background and Objectives:Mast cells are abundant at environmental barrier sites enabling quick reactions to any harmfulevents. Host defense in the skin may be occupied by the secretions from gland cells of the external ear canal skin. The aim ofthis study was to localize mast cells in the canal skin and compare it with that found in the ceruminous and sebaceous glands.Materials and Method:The distribution of mast cells (tryptase, chymase) in the external auditory canal skin of the humanwas observed histologically by means of immunostaining with ABC complex method after fixation with 4% paraformaldehydesolution. Results:Mast cells were confined mainly to a dermal layer just beneath the outer layer of keratinizing stratifiedsquamous epithelium. The mast cells also distribute densely in the deeper layer of the dermis of the canal skin more than in thesuperficial layer. Most of the mast cells were found adjacent to ceruminous glands though some lay scattered in the region ofsebaceous glands. Conclusion:These findings of increased mast cell localization in the deep dermis rather than in thesuperficial dermis, as well as their concentration around the ceruminous glands, raise the possibility of an interaction betweenglands and mast cells.       • Electrical Characteristics and Microwave Properties of MgO Bicrystal Josephson Junction with Polyvinylidene Fluoride Gate Electrode

        We have fabricated a high-Tc superconductive transistor with polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) gate electrode on MgO bicrystal Josephson junction by spin-coating method. The PVDF ferroelectric film is found to be suitable fur a gate electrode of the superconductive transistor since it has not only small leakage current but also high dieletric constant at low temperature. For the application of superconducting-FET, we investigated millimeter wave properties (60 GHz band) of the Josephson junction with PVDF gate electrode.
