Acupuncture, an over 2500 years old therapeutic method stemming from traditional oriental medicine, is nowadays wide open to modern medical science. With the widespread usage of acupuncture, the number of article about biomechanical or therapeutic effects of acupuncture from animal experiments and clinical trials is largely reported. In a previous study, we have reported that Joksamlee(ST36) acupuncture increases serum protein and glucose but decrease serum lipid and cholesterol. For further study, we was examined effects of Shenshu(B23) and Samumgyo(SP6) acupuncture stimulation on differential blood components in growing and adult male rate. 24 male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned into three groups; A1 (B23 and SP6 acupuncture in adult rats) group, A2 (B23 acupuncture in growing rats) group, and control group. The results obtained were as follows; 1. Body weight was significantly decreased in A1 and A2 groups. 2. Serum TP level was not changed, but albumin level was significantly increased in A2 group. 3. Serum glucose level was significantly increased in A1 group. 4. Serum TG level was significantly decreased in A2 group: PL level was significantly decreased in both A1 and A2 groups; FFA level was not changed. 5. Serum T.CHO, HDL-C and LDL-C levels were not changed in both A1 and A2. 6. Serum amylase activity was significantly increased in A1 group.

This study was investigated the effect of the Kinesio taping on muscle power and muscular endurance in quadriceps femoris. Twenty-three subjects, 14 male and 9 female, were included in this study. Peak torque et al at 60℃/sec, average power and average power to BW ratio et al at 180℃/sec were neasured by using a Cybex 1000(Orthotron KT2) and compared between before- and after-taping. The results were as follows; 1. Isokinetic muscle power measures-peak torque, peak torque to BW ratio, work/repetition, work/repetition to BW ratio, average power/repetition, average power/repetition to BW ratio-, in total was increased following kinesio taping. 2. There were significant differences in the isoisokinetic muscle power measures-peak torque, F/E ratio, work/repetition, work/repetition to BW ratio- of male, and F/E ratio of female. 3. isokinetic muscular endurance measures-initial peak torque, initial peak torque to BW ratio, total work done-, in total was increased following kinesio taping. 4. There weren't significant differences in the isokinetic muscular endurance measures of male, but there were significantly in the initial peak torque, initial peak torque to BW ratio, total work done, total work done to BW ratio, average power, average power to BW ratio of female. 5. There were significant differences in the isokinetic muscle power measures among sex groups. 6. There were significant differences in the isokinetic muscular endurance measures among sex groups. This study showed that the application of the Kinesio taping in quadricepsfemris enhanced muscle power and muscular endurance.

Peripheral nerve injuries are a commonly encountered clinical problem and often result in severe functional deficits. To understand the effects of various therapeutic measures on functional recovery after peripheral nerve injury, we made a crush injury to the sciatic nerve of 114 Sprague-Dawley rats, and one of the three therapeutic measures; exercise, electrical stimulation, and laser irradiation, was applied. And then, we analysed the sciatic nerve functional index (SFI) once a week following the injury. It was shown that sciatic nerve crush injury developed characteristic gait changes dropping the sciatic function index (SFI) value, and then this value was slowly recovered. Two to three weeks following the injury was the most important periods for the functional recovery regardless of the therapeutic measures applied. At the stages of recovery, laser irradiation has better effects than electrical stimulation, and exercise training. These results suggested that application of various therapeutic measures after nerve injury is effective in the functional recovery, and the appropriate selection of therapeutic measure according to the clinical stages may be important for the optimal functional recovery.

The purpose of this article is to standardize the normal values of elbow and wrist joints connected the shoulder joint in Part I range of motion in Korean adults. The elbow joint range of motion is flexion, pronation, supination and wrist joint range of motion is extension, flexion, ulnar deviation, radial deviation. These were measured on 170 subjects by a goniometer and related to sex, age and dominance of extremity. The range of age is 3rd decade to 7th and total mean age is 41.87±14.71. The results are as follows: 1) The mean values of elbow joint range of motion are 136.18±4.66˚ in flexion, 85.71±9.97˚ in pronation, 110.06±13.17˚ in supination and wrist joint are 62.59±10.18˚ in extension, 62.38±11.40˚ in flexion, 50.24 ±9.76˚ in ulnar deviation, 23.06±6.58˚ in radial deviation. 2) The range of motion was wider in 3rd and 4th decade than more decade but it was no significant in accordance with the age in elbow and wrist joints. 3) There is no significant difference related to the dominance of extremity in elbow and wrist joints. 4) The range of motion was wider in female adults compared with male adults in all directions of elbow and wrist joints

The purpose of this study is to suggest the easy exercise program for elderly stroke patients. Then non-physiotherapist relative to medical service facilities may be able to apply in management of stroke patient's functional activity. The subjects were seventeen hemiplegic elderly patients participating in day service exercise program at Eun-Chun day care center for three months. Exercise program consisted of passive, balance, and mat exercise which was performed 30min/session, 3days/week. The effects of the exercise program ware evaluated by activity index (AI) and modified Barthel index (MBI). Exercise program could prevent stroke patient's complication and maintain their function. Further it could improved their motor ability, particularly fine movement. We believe that exercise program used this study will be utilize by non-physiotherapist in home and social service facilities.

The purpose of this study was to determine if there were any beneficial effects of massage or microwave diathermy regarding delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) and indices of muscle damage. Twenty-one adult women, randomly divided in two treatment groups and a control group, performed eccentric stepping exercise with the quadriceps until exhaustion. The treatment groups additionally performed massage or microwave diathermy after the stepping exercise. Pressure pain threshold measure for DOMS and muscle enzymes in the blood were obtained before, and 0, 24, 48 and 72 hours after exercise. The results were as follows; 1. Eccentric exercise caused DOMS and elevations of muscle enzymes in the blood, with peak values exercise levels by 24 hours after exercise and GOT and CRP by 72 hours after exercise. DOMS and CK activity remained elevated 72 hours after exercise. 2. DOMS and blood muscle enzymes response to eccentric exercise were reduces by massage or micro diathermy therapy. DOMS was significantly decreased at 72 hours after exercise by massage and microwave diathermy. CK activity was significantly decreased at 72 hours after exercise by microwave diathermy. There was the significant reduction in LDH at 48 hours, GOT at 24, 48, 72 hours. and CRP at 24, 48 hours after exercise by massage and microwave diathermy. These results indicate that massage or microwave diathermy is had effect on recovery from exercise-induced muscle damage. In our's suggestion. microwave diathermy is particularly more appropriate therapeutic modality because it is more simple and economic than massage.
