This paper examines relation between growth of adult top shell and their selectivity over different marine algae. For the study the top shell density and the algal species in different depth were surveyed by SCUBA. To test selectivity over different types of algae, five algal species including Ecklonia cava, Undaria pinnatifida, Ulva spp, Gelidium amansii and Sargassum spp were provided to top shells in indoor water tank condition. In the field survey, the wet weight of Ecklonia cava was significantly (r = 0.612, p < 0.05) correlated to the shell length (SL) of top shell. In the indoor water tank experiment conducted over 12 hours after sunrise, adult top shell (SL > SL 4.5 cm) tended to select Ecklonia cava and Undaria pinnatifida, which are common and abundant algal in the subtidal waters in Jeju Island. Our field survey and the indoor experiment suggest that E. cava and U. pinnatifida could be food preferred by adult top shell in its habitat.

We examined the characteristics of egg and larval distributions and catch changes of anchovy in relation to abnormally high sea temperature in the South Sea of Korea in summer 2015 and 2016. The densities of anchovy eggs and larvae in the southern coastal region were lower in July-August 2016 than in July-August 2015. In particular, anchovy eggs and larvae (approximately 5 mm TL) were rarely observed in the coastal region in August 2016 due to the abnormally high SST (up to 28°C), which was above the optimum spawning temperature of anchovy. The catch of non-swimming stage (< 2 cm TL) larval anchovy was lower in July-August 2016 than in July-August 2015. The decreased catch of larval anchovy in July-August 2016 could be attributed to decreased spawning density in June-July 2016. In contrast, the catch of swimming stage ( > 2 cm TL) anchovy was increased in July-August 2016. In the summer of 2016, prominent sea temperature near the southern coast of Korea and sea temperature higher than 30°C in the offshore region of the South Sea of Korea could greatly enhance the retention of swimming anchovies in the coastal fishing grounds.

본 연구는 남해 중부 연안역에서 2016년 4~8월까지 자어 군집구조의 월 변화를 조사하였다. 조사기간 동안 총 42종의 자어가 출현하였다. 우점종 중 멸치 (E. japonicus)는 여름보다는 봄철에 우점하였고, 용서대 (C. abbreviates)는 봄철에만 출현하였으며 수조기 (N. albiflora)는 여름철에만 출현하였다. 자어 군집은 계절별로 4~5월 (봄)과 6~8월 (여름)의 그룹으로 유의하게 나눌 수 있었고, 여름철은 또다시 6~7월과 8월의 두개의 유의한 그룹으로 나눌 수 있었다. 2016년 8월 조사해역에서는 이상 고수온 현상이 발생하여 표면수온이 28℃까지 상승하였고, 멸치와 수조기 자어의 출현량은 산란 적정수온을 넘은 수온으로 인해 급감하였다. We examined monthly variations in community structure of larval fish assemblage in the coastal waters of south-central Korea in spring and summer, 2016. A total of 31 taxa of larvae were collected during the study period. Engraulis japonicus larvae were predominated in spring than summer. The larvae of Cynoglossus abbreviates, a spring spawners, were exclusively collected in spring, while those of Nibea albiflora, a summer spawners, were exclusively caught in summer. Due to those seasonal differences in abundance of the dominant species, larval fish community was divided into two main seasonal groups (i.e. April~May and June~August). In addition, summer group was divided into two significant subgroups (June~July and August). During August, the larvae of E. japonicus and N. albiflora sharply decreased in abundance due to abnormally high sea water temperature that was raised up to 28°C, with the temperature being out of range of their optimum spawning temperature.

Our aim was to compare the community structure of fish in the coast of Wando Island between 2001 and 2013. Us-ing a gape net with wings, we collected 61 taxa, wherein the most dominant species was Engraulis japonicus. The sea temperature in the middle layer of the survey station in 2001 (after June) was obviously higher than that in 2013, which was < 20°C. Except for Thryssa kammalensis in 2013, the log transformed individuals of seven dominant species, selected using a SIMPER (similarity-percentages procedure) analysis, decreased. Decreases in the individu-als of Gobiidae spp., the warm-water species Trichiurus japonicus and Conger myriaster, and the migratory species Syngnathus schlegeli, Setipinna taty and Sardinella zunasi, which arrive in the southern coastal waters of Korea dur-ing summer-autumn, could be due to decreasing sea temperature in 2013. Thus, fish species diversity, estimated from rarefaction and k-dominance curves, declined in the coastal waters of Wando Island from 2001 to 2013, resulting in a significant difference in fish community structure
봄어기 여수 연안 이각망에 어획된 어류 군집구조의 연도별 변화

We examined the inter-annual changes in the community structure of fish in the Yeosu coast during the spring fishing period (May June) from 2008 to 2015. Using a both sides fyke net, we collected 74 taxa, of which the dominant species was Trachurus japonicus. In the years 2009-2010 and 2015, when the relative abundance of T. japonicus decreased, the fish species diversity increased, as estimated from the rarefaction curve and beta-diversity, resulting in a significant difference in the fish community structure between two year groups: one comprising 2009-2010 and 2015 and the other comprising 2008 and 2011-2014. T. japonicus may be a keystone species that plays a critical role in temporal changes in the community structure of fish caught by fyke nets along the southern coast of Korea. Obvious modes in the length-frequency of T. japonicus smaller than fork length (FL) 10 cm were observed continually during the study, while the frequency of T. japonicus bigger than FL 15 cm declined rapidly after 2010. The new recruitment of smaller T. japonicus before and after 2010 appeared beginning in June and May, respectively.

Postlarval and juvenile anchovies were collected using a gape net with wings in the coastal waters of Yeosu in July and August 2015, and their gut contents were analyzed. The size range of the postlarvae was 11.0-24.2 mm (notochord length) and that of the juveniles was 25.1-37.4 mm (standard length). Guts were empty in 64.5% of postlarvae and in 51.7% of juveniles. The dominant prey organisms in the guts of both postlarvae and juveniles were copepoda. Calanoida were important prey organisms for postlarvae and were dominated by nauplii of Paracalanus sp. and Calanus sp. as well as unidentified copepod naupill. Calanoida were also important in the diets of juveniles, whose gut contents were dominated by Paracalanus sp. and Cirripedia. Gut compositions were significantly different (P<0.05) among three body size levels in postlarvae and juveniles. As the body size of the postlarvae and juveniles increased, Calanoida constituted a larger proportion of the gut contents, while the proportion of copepod nauplii decreased.

A single juvenile specimen of Thunnus alalunga (8.4 mm in standard length) of the Scombridae was collected from the southeast sea of Jeju Island (127.7˚E, 33.0˚N) on August 18, 2011. It was identified as T. alalunga based on the following combination of morphological characters: snout elongated; melanophores focused on the dorsal spiny region, but no melanophores on the dorsal soft fin base, anal fin base or caudal region.

The aim of this study was to compare community structure of larval fish species in the northern East China Sea during normal meteorological conditions in autumn 2009, during the El Nino period in 2009-2010, and during the La Nina period in 2010. Fifty taxa were recorded during the study period; the most dominant species were Benthosema pterotum and Gobiidae spp. In October 2008 during the normal period, warm water from the Tsushima Warm Current (TWC) intruded more into the surface and middle layers, and cold water affected by the Yellow Sea Cold Water (YSCW) intruded into the bottom layer. In October 2009 during the El Nino period, intrusion of the China Coastal Water (CCW), which has low salinity (<32.2 psu), was more apparent than intrusion of the TWC or YSCW. In October 2010 during the La Nina period, intrusion of the TWC and CCW was relatively weak, resulting in the lowest temperature and highest salinity observed during the study period in the eastern part of the study area. Hierarchical cluster, one-way ANOSIM (analysis of similarities), and SIMPER (similarity-percentages procedure) analyses provided two main results. First, the abundance of the most dominant larval fish species in autumn of the normal period was greater than that in autumn of the El Nino/La Nina periods, resulting in a significant difference in ichthyoplankton community structure between the periods. The abundance of Benthosema pterotum increased in the normal period, possibly influenced by the intrusion of cold water from the YSCW; the abundance of species residing in Korean waters (e.g., Gobiidae spp.) probably decreased during the El Nino/La Nina periods. The second finding was that the abundance of subtropical larval fish in autumn of the normal period was generally larger than that during autumn of the El Nino/La Nina periods. This could have been induced by the stronger intrusion of warm water from the TWC during the normal period. Although differences in oceanographic conditions between El Nino and La Nina periods were observed, the differences in ichthyoplankton community structure between the two periods were not significant
