Vol.19 No.1

Purpose: This study was done to develop a valid and reliable Classification System for Critical Care Nursing (CSCCN) to be used in Intensive Care Units (ICUs). Methods: Head nurses and staff nurses of 17 ICUs in 6 hospitals classified 307 patients to verify interrater reliability. To verify construct validity, the staff nurses classified 404 patients according to CSCCN comparing difference in medical department and type of stay in ICU. For conversion index, 78 patients from 4 ICUs of 'S' hospital were classified and nursing time was measured by 107 nurses and 18 nurse aids using stopwatches. Results: The developed CSCCN has 11 categories, 76 nursing activities and 101 criteria. The reliability was verified as having high agreement (r=.946). The construct validity was verified comparing differences in medical department and type of stay in ICU. According to scores, four groups in the CSCCN classification were identified. According to the conversion index, one score on the CSCCN means 7.2 minutes of nursing time. Conclusion: CSCCN can be used to measure diverse and complex nursing demands including psycho-social aspects of ICU patients and convert nursing demands to numbers.

Light Verb Constructions in English: Cognitive and Discourse Perspectives

Vol.23 No.4

The term ‘light verbs’ such as have/give/take/do/make in ‘have a swim’, ‘give the show a miss’, ‘take a dive’, ‘do a favor’ and ‘make a decision’ was at first coined by Jespersen(1954). Since then there have been two groups of researches competing in respect to English light verb constructions (LVC, in short). One is to propose that the light verbs which head these constructions do not largely contribute to the meaning of the complex predicate (Jackendoff 1974, Cattell 1984, Baker 1988, Grimshaw and Mester 1988, Culicover and Jackendoff 2001, among others). The other is to suggest that somehow they put their own meanings to the construction with their contents a little bit lightened (Wierzbicka 1982, Dixon 1991, Brugman 2001, among others). This dissertation is in favor of the latter position, focusing on some problems which have been ignored or overlooked by current studies. In order to deal with the issues, I adopt two perspectives, cognitive and discourse perspective. Especially, three problems will be highlighted throughout this dissertation. The first one is about allowing a variety of forms of deverbal nouns (DVNs, in short) in ‘true light verb’ (TLVs, in short) constructions, which are defined to preserve the fixed form (‘a + V’), unexpectedly taking other determiners or breaking their frozen status structurally. As DVNs of TLVs have been treated as unstable NPs in that they rarely undergo syntactic operations such as wh-movement, passivization, pronominalization, and occurrence with definite articles, as suggested in Kearns (2002), many spoken data observed in corpora such as COCA, BNC, WebCorp. which threaten their frozen structural status, need to be explained. The second is about the insufficient analysis of DVN’s own productivity for LVCs in that the appearances of new action verbs in LVC that have generally not been accepted as a member of the DVNs have continually been introduced newly to LVCs in English. Regarding these two issues, I adopt cognitive mechanisms such as Conceptual Metaphor, Unitarization and Reification. With Conceptual metaphor, it is demonstrated that humans consider even their actions as something possessed and produced, proposing the conceptual metaphors for TLVs AN ACTION IS A POSSESSION, for Vague Action Verbs (VAVs, in short) AN ACTION IS A PRODUCT. In order to explain the conceptualized path for the various structural forms of DVNs in LVCs, I use other mechanisms such as Unitarization and Reification. In terms of Unitarization, I suggest that people can view an action as a unit by way of considering one action as a representative for the members of its set, which provides a motivation for the process of Unitarization. On the other hand, for Reification, I adopt Radden and Dirven’s (2007, R & D, in short) proposal that almost all the abstract nouns are regarded as a thing converted from a relation such as verbs or adjectives by way of ‘reification’, and then apply it to the generation of DVNs of LVCs. In contrast with R & D, this study argues that the reification applying to DVNs in LVCs can be classified into four types along the gradient scale with degrees of ‘nouniness’ based on the tests for the grammatical environments preferred for NP: ‘immature reification’ (IR, in short, eg. ‘getting up’): ‘semi-reification’ (SR, in short, eg. ‘a lie-down’), ‘activated reification’ (AR, in short, eg. ‘a walk/walks’) and ‘mature reification’ (MR, in short, eg. ‘marriage’) types. The tests given for dividing types of reification include topicalization, referentiality, co-occurrence with determiners as well as passivization, pronominlization, etc., the latter of which were suggested by Kearns (2002). It should be noted that among these types, SR, AR and MR types are systematically related to DVNs of LVCs under discussion. The third issue is about indifference toward differences of subtle meanings between LVCs and hea...

Vol.60 No.12

We investigated students' perceptions of the "Science Orientation for Students (SOS)" program, in which 196 high-school students participated in various science and math activities for 3 days. The students had high abilities at science and mathematics, as well as high levels of science attitude and motivation for learning science. The SOS program did not change students' science attitude and motivation for learning. However, some of the subcategories of science attitude and science motivation, such as "leisure interest in science," "adoption of scientific attitudes," "career interest in science," and "self-determination," were affected positively by the SOS program. As the most preferred subprograms, the students chose activities that included lectures, experiments and laboratory tours because they could explore more scientific content through those activities. They selected group discussion and writing as the second most preferred subprogram because they could experience the scientific process firsthand through cooperation with friends. In addition, more than half the students formed more positive attitudes for science. The results of this study can be used to improve SOS programs by implementing specific programs for students who have high abilities in science and mathematics.

Kim Il-yeop and Christianity: The Influence of Christianity on the Life and Identity of Kil Il-yeop

2015 THE REVIEW OF KOREAN STUDIES Vol.18 No.2

Kim Il-yeop is considered to have been a pioneering female writer in the history of modern Korean women’s literature, beginning in the 1920s; she was Korea’s first female editor and publisher of a magazine for women, Sinnyeoja. She was one of the first generation of Korean “new women” and “modern female writers.” More importantly, however, Kim Il-yeop had a close relationship with Protestant Christianity and was at one time in her life a devout Christian. This paper investigates what in fact Christianity meant to Kim Il-yeop in her own life, in other words, how exactly she understood the Christian religion and in what ways she experienced and practiced it. Christianity shaped the landscape of her childhood, which included a Christian home, a Christian education, and her father’s embodiment of a fine Christian character as a pastor. Concerning her personality in her childhood, Kim Il-yeop herself attributed her fine and optimistic character to her Christian faith. On the other hand, however, she characterized Christianity as a religion of “repressive ideas” whose doctrines operated as a moral force that compelled strict self-regulation. More importantly, Kim Il-yeop understood herself through her identity as a pastor’s daughter and according to the expectations of her father. She experienced and understood Christianity and the true Christian life through her father. Her father’s influence on her derived primarily from the lessons she learned in observing his sincere religious life, rather than Christian doctrine. Kim Il-yeop understood the lessons of his Christian life more broadly and practiced them in her religious life after she became a Buddhist monk. Later on in life, Kim Il-yeop began to present a growing skepticism about Christianity, and this resulted in the weakening and final rejection of her Christian faith. She ultimately repudiated all the beliefs and claims she had accepted before. The motivation behind her repudiation of Christianity was the fact that she was interested in “free love” and even enjoyed romantic relationships during her youth. Indeed, her life as a new woman went against strict and conservative Christian norms and ethics. Kim Il-yeop’s repudiation of Christianity was in a broader sense related to the traditional and patriarchal Christian churches of Korean Christianity at that time. For her, Christianity itself never became a real power and source of energy with which she could handle the reality and difficulty of life, and in the end, she failed to save her faith.

In Light in August and Absalom, Absalom!

Vol.23 No.-

This essay classifies Faulkner's women characters into "earthmothers" and ''ghosts.'' Regardless of class or race, his women must be considered in view of then femaleness. The earthmother, like Lena, has female qualities - fertility creativity and sexuality. On the other hand, in the case of the ghost, her sex is ignored by male characters and she lives a deathlike life. In either case female caharacter has a special meaning in Faulkner's novels. Lena, in Light m August, may be a minor character, but thematically she is of major importance. The novel consists of the triad of action - the Christmas, Hightower and Lena's story. Christmas is a tragic hero, and Lena illimines him and the male-dominated society by contrast- Lena, as a feminine ideal, accepts life; whereas Christmas resists the feminine principle and therefore life. Faulkner himself says that this novel begins with Lena's image and that this novel is Lena's story. Likewise Absalom, Absalom! can be read as Rosa's story, not merely as Sutpen's myth. Rosa, as a lost child and woman, lives neglected by male society, that is, by her father and by Sutpen. After 43 year-long silence, she tries to tell ''her story(women's history)" to the new generation, Quentin. The male society, however, attempts to silence her story or interpret it into the male discourse. Once again they transform her into a ghost. In this sense Rosa is a symbolic character of Southern history m which the patriarchal system has surpressed female sex and female discourse. In conclusion, in Faulkner's novels, the archetype of the women is an earthmother, but the male society transforms her into a ghost. Using this View of Faulkner's women characters, this essay approaches two of his novels from a new perspective, the perspective gained by a feminist reading.
