        Severe Fever with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome

        Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is a newly emerging infectious disease, caused by a novel species of Phlebovirus of Bunyaviridae family, in China, South Korea, and Japan. SFTS is primarily known as a tick-borne disease, and human-to-human transmission is also possible in contact with infectious blood. Common clinical manifestations include fever, thrombocytopenia, and leukopenia as initial symptoms, and multiple organ dysfunction and failure manifest with disease progression. Whereas disease mortality is reported to be 12% to 30% in China, a recent report of cumulative SFTS cases indicated 47% in Korea. Risk factors associated with SFTS were age, presence of neurologic disturbance, serum enzyme levels, and elevated concentrations of certain cytokines. Diagnosis of SFTS is based on viral isolation, viral identification by polymerase chain reaction, and serologic identification of specific immunoglobulin G. Therapeutic guideline has not been formulated, but conservative management is the mainstream of treatment to prevent disease progression and fatal complications.

        Diffusion Tensor Imaging and Quantitative Magnetic Resonance Volumetric Assessment in the Diagnosis of Hemimegalencephaly: A Case Report

        A 27-year-old female presented with repeated seizures. As the left frontal lobe volume was enlarged in comparison with the right frontal lobe, hemimegalencephaly was suggested. Abnormal white matter fiber tracts running from the left frontal lobe to the fornix and hippocampus were found on diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). We performed quantitative measurements of brain volume and confirmed hemimegalencephaly. DTI and MRI-based volumetry techniques could be useful to objectively diagnose hemimegalencephaly.

        GABA 유산균 발효물에서의 항산화 활성

        In this study, antioxidant activity was investigated in yogurt fermentation using GABA lactic acid bacteria(LAB). In DPPH radical scavenging ability, the control group was 26.71%, the 0.5% GABA LAB culture added group was 50.56%, and the 1% added group was 65.44%. The 2% addition group was the highest with 73.55%, which was significantly higher in proportion to the amount of LAB extract added. In ABTS radical scavenging activity, the control group was 44.01%, and 0.5% to 58.71% of GABA LAB culture extracts, 74.19% to 1%, and 82.41% to 2%. ABTS radical scavenging activity was also significantly increased (P < 0.05) in proportion to the LAB culture extract addition concentration. In the reducing power by FRAP, the control group was 0.43, 0.5% at 0.52, 1% at 0.85, and 2% added group was 1.13, which was the highest in the 2% group. The FRAP value of the control group and the 0.5% group was not significant, and the FRAP value increased significantly as the amount of GABA LAB culture extract increased (P <0 .05). The total polyphenol content was the lowest at 327.54 µg/mL in the control group, and the highest polyphenol content was 368.06 µg/mL in 0.5% to 345.86 µg/mL, 1% to 359.03 µg/mL, and 2%. The flavonoid content was 381.16 CE µg/mL, 416.02 CE µg/mL, 440.04 CE µg/mL and 469.38 CE µg/mL in the control group and 0.5, 1, 2% added GABA LAB culture extracts, respectively. The concentration of GABA LAB culture extract increased significantly (P <0.05). As a result, GABA extract has been identified as a high antioxidant activity in lactic acid bacteria fermented yogurt has the potential to be used as a variety of functional products.

        2016년도 전라북도 지역 법의부검에 대한 통계적 분석

        This study aimed to obtain basic regional data of legal autopsy cases observed in the Jeollabuk-do province concerning causes and manner of death. We investigated 170 autopsy cases (114 males [67.0%] and 56 females [33%]) performed at the Department of Forensic Medicine, Chonbuk National University Medical School, in 2016. Of these, seven (4.1%) were children aged <10 years. Regarding the manner of death, there were 95 unnatural deaths (55.9%), 69 natural deaths (40.6%), and six deaths from unknown causes (3.5%). Among the 95 unnatural deaths, 29 suicides (30.5%), 10 homicides (10.5%), 52 accidental deaths (54.7%), and four undetermined deaths (4.2%) were recorded. Concerning causes of unnatural death, there were 39 traumatic injury-related deaths (41.2%), 10 asphyxiations (10.5%), 25 poisonings (26.3%), 13 thermal injury-related deaths (13.7%), and eight deaths due to drowning (8.4%). The most common cause of unnatural death was injury from falls (n=15), followed by agrochemical poisoning (n=12), traffic injury (n=12), and death from fire (n=11). Of 69 natural deaths, 31 were from cardiac diseases (44.9%), eight from cerebral or vascular diseases (11.6%), 12 from digestive system diseases (17.4%), one from respiratory system disease (1.4%), five from endocrine/metabolic/nutritional disorders (7.2%), and nine due to causes of unknown origin (including sudden manhood and sudden infant death syndromes) (13.1%).

        인권보호 측면에서의 법과학 감정 제도 및절차적 개선방안

        Since the results of the forensic science appraisal are used as evidence for criminal trials, credibility and validity must be guaranteed as they play an important role in determining a person's life. To this end, there is a way to ensure the reliability of the results by reducing errors in forensic science service. However, the number of emotions commissioned by the National Forensic Service increases exponentially every year, while the number of forensic scientist is overloaded due to problems such as not being met, which increases the likelihood of various errors in tests. So, it is necessary to improve the quality of emotional work, respectively, through institutional improvements such as increasing the workforce of workers and limiting the limits of forensic works per scientist. Next, due to its nature as a professional field of forensic science, forensic work is carried out, creating an imbalance between the people and investigative agencies, which could lead to a wide gap in criminal trials over whether or not they are guilty. Therefore, it is also necessary to narrow the inequality between the people and the investigative agencies by supplementing the number of people, as well as procedural and institutional supplementing them so that they can give expert witness in areas that include forensic science service, from the investigation stage to the trial stage, rather than expert witness at the trial stage. Finally, there is a lack of discussion on the ethics of forensic scientists as a special professional role compared to the profound impact of forensic science service on the lives of the people. Therefore, it is necessary to review the code of ethics abroad and establish a code of ethics that can impose practical sanctions, not just ethical norms, to raise the vigilance of forensic scientists against ethical violations.

        코로나바이러스감염증 2019에서 흉부X선사진 및 CT의 역할과 인공지능의 적용

        Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has threatened public health as a global pandemic. Chest CT and radiography are crucial in managing COVID-19 in addition to reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction, which is the gold standard for COVID-19 diagnosis. This is a review of the current status of the use of chest CT and radiography in COVID-19 diagnosis and management and anㄷ introduction of early representative studies on the application of artificial intelligence to chest CT and radiography. The authors also share their experiences to provide insights into the future value of artificial intelligence. 코로나바이러스감염증-19 (coronavirus disease 2019; 이하 COVID-19)는 전 세계적 대유행질환으로 인류 보건을 위협하고 있다. 흉부 CT 및 흉부X선사진은 COVID-19의 표준 진단검사인 역전사 중합효소 연쇄반응에 더하여 COVID-19 진단 및 중증도 평가에서 중요한 역할을 하고 있다. 본 종설에서는 흉부 CT 및 흉부X선사진의 COVID-19 폐렴에 대한 현재 역할에대하여 살펴보고 인공지능을 적용한 대표적 초기 연구들과 저자들의 경험을 소개함으로써향후 활용가치에 대해 살펴보고자 한다.
