이 글의 목적은 불교경전에 나타난 대표적인 여성혐오적인 교리를 불교여성주의적 관점에서 해석하는 것이다. 불교경전은 인간평등과 해방을 주창한 붓다의 가르침을 기록한 것이지만, 그 안에는 열등하고 부정적인 여성상과 자비롭고 지혜로운 여성상이 동시에 제시되어 있다. 그 결과 한편으로는 여성에게 가장 유연하고 열려 있는 모습을 보여주고 또 다른 한편으로는 부정적이고 열등한 여성관을 담고 있다. 여성혐오적 교리 해석의 대표적인 예를 보면, 여성도 성불할 수 있다는 여성성불론은 여성불성불론과 변성성불론으로, 인간의 몸이 부정한 것임을 깨달아 탐욕을 없애는 마음수행법의 일종인 부정관(不淨觀)은 더러운 여성의 몸 담론으로 왜곡되었다. 독신비구의 금욕을 강조한 붓다의 의도는 여성 섹슈얼리티 통제를 정당화 하는 것으로 받아들여졌으며, 열등한 여성관으로 이어졌다. 성차별적 아비투스를 유지, 전승하는 왜곡된 불교 교리를 바로잡는 해석은 평등과 해방을 주창한 붓다의 가르침으로 돌아가기 위한 출발점이라고 할 수 있다. 교리는 여성 억압의 도구로 작동하기도 하고 반대로 여성해방의 장치가 되기도 하기 때문이다. 붓다의 말씀에 대한 여성혐오적 해석과 그에 기반한 왜곡된 교리는 아직도 다양한 방식으로 전승되고 있으며 이러한 교리가 성차별적인 종단법이나 제도에 정당성을 부여하고, 승가 내에서도 비구와 비구니를 차별하는 전통과 관습을 고착화시키고 있다. 교리의 변화 없이 법?제도적인 개혁만으로는 실질적인 평등을 가져오기 쉽지 않다. 그러므로 불교여성은 경전 속에 전해오는 여성혐오적 교리에 대한 철저한 검증과 비판을 통해 그 가부장성을 해체함과 동시에, 붓다의 사상에 내포한 긍정적인 여성관에 기반하여 성평등을 실천하는 주체로 나서야 한다. This article reinterprets the typical sexist doctrine that appears in the Buddhist scriptures in the Buddhist feminist perspective. The scripture that recorded Buddha’s teachings advocates gender equality and liberation and presents at the same time an inferior and negative view of women, and compassionate and wise view of woman. On one hand the results show the most flexible and open women’s doctrine, however, on the other hand shows negative and inferior view of women. This represents that reinterpretation of the sexist doctrine is urgent. While the doctrine is the Buddha’s teaching that declares the equality and liberation of gender, in reality, dual viewpoints of women, distorted transmission of ‘insight into purity’, a kind of Buddhist practices, restrictions on female sexuality for the sake of Bhikku’s abstinence, transmission and dissemination of women’s view of otherness, etc., resulted in fixed discourses of misogynism and gender discrimination. Nowadays, the teachings of Buddha are being taught distorted and the scriptures should always be questioned and be validated to match the actual teachings of the Buddha. Thus, by revealing implicit gender hierarchy and patriarchy in the scriptures, sexist doctrine should be proclaimed that it is not the Buddha’s teachings and the gender equality in Buddhism should be rebuilt.
