Background/Aims: Falls among older people are a major public health problem and may result in fracture, medical complications that require hospitalization, and fear of additional falls. Given the prevalence and impact of the fear of falling again, reducing the incidence of falls is important to prevent additional falls. This study analyzed whether exercise programs decrease the fear of future falls in elderly patients who have fallen previously. Methods: A randomized controlled study was performed that included 65 elderly community-dwelling subjects who had fallen in the previous year. Subjects were randomized into two groups: an exercise group (EG, n = 36) and a control group (CG, n = 29). The EG participated in three exercise sessions per week for 12 weeks. Muscle strength, balance, agility, flexibility, and muscular endurance were measured at baseline and after 12 weeks. Results: After the 12-week exercise program, the subjects in the EG demonstrated remarkable improvement in their walking speed, balance (p = 0.003), back strength (p = 0.08), lower extremity strength (p = 0.004), and flexibility (p < 0.001). When asked whether they were afraid of falling, more participants in the EG than in the CG responded “not at all” or “a little.”Conclusions: The 12-week exercise program described here reduced the fear of falling (p = 0.02). It also improved the balance, flexibility, and muscle strength of the participants and was associated with improved quality of life.

Carbon nanofiber (CNF) composites coated with spindle-shaped $Fe_2O_3$ nanoparticles (NPs) are fabricated by a combination of an electrospinning method and a hydrothermal method, and their morphological, structural, and chemical properties are measured by field-emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. For comparison, CNFs and spindle-shaped $Fe_2O_3$ NPs are prepared by either an electrospinning method or a hydrothermal method, respectively. Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) fabricated with the composites exhibit enhanced open circuit voltage (0.70 V), short-circuit current density ($12.82mA/cm^2$), fill factor (61.30%), and power conversion efficiency (5.52%) compared to those of the CNFs (0.66 V, $11.61mA/cm^2$, 51.96%, and 3.97%) and spindle-shaped $Fe_2O_3$ NPs (0.67 V, $11.45mA/cm^2$, 50.17%, and 3.86%). This performance improvement can be attributed to a synergistic effect of a superb catalytic reaction of spindle-shaped $Fe_2O_3$ NPs and efficient charge transfer relative to the one-dimensional nanostructure of the CNFs. Therefore, spindle-shaped $Fe_2O_3$-NP-coated CNF composites may be proposed as a potential alternative material for low-cost counter electrodes in DSSCs.
태양열 흡수판용 복층 TiNO<sub>x</sub> 박막의 제조와 특성 분석

TiNOx multi-layer thin films on aluminum substrates were prepared by DC reactive magnetron sputtering method. 4 multi-layers of $TiO_2$/TiNOx(LMVF)/TiNOx(HMVF)/Ti/substrate have been prepared with ratio of Ar and ($N_2+O_2$) gas mixture. $TiO_2$ of top layer is anti-reflection layer on double TiNOx(LMVF)/TiNOx(HMVF) layers and Ti metal of infrared reflection layer. In this study, the crystallinity and surface properties of TiNOx thin films were estimated by X-ray diffraction(XRD) and field emission scanning electron microscopy(FE-SEM), respectively. The grain size of TiNOx thin films shows to increase with increasing sputtering power. The composition of thin films has been investigated using electron probe microanalysis(EPMA). The optical properties with wavelength spectrum were recorded by UV-Vis-NIR spectrophotometry at a range of 200~1,500 nm. The TiNOx multi-layer films show the excellent optical performance beyond 9% of reflectance in those ranges wavelength.
A Sphaghetti Sign in the Abdominal Radiograph Consistent with Spleno-Systemic Shunts in a Cat

A 8-year-old spayed female Korean short-haired cat was presented with respiratory distress. CBC, serum chemistry analysis, plain radiography, and abdominal ultrasonography were performed. Besides hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) suspected by the thoracic radiograph, a tubular, tortuous soft tissue structure was detected at the region of the left retroperitoneal cavity on the abdominal radiograph. On the abdominal ultrasonography, a shunt vessel is identified caudo-lateral to the left kidney region. These findings are consistent with spleno-systemic shunts in cats. Furthermore, portal hypertension and diffuse hepatic lesion were also identified. Although the cause of a shunt vessel is not easy to diagnose, it is important to include spleno-systemic shunt into differential diagnosis list, when convoluted, tubular soft tissue opacity is seen on the digital radiography (DR). This report will allow clinicians to raise awareness of complications of portosystemic shunt (PSS) and better treat PSS suspected feline patients when the advanced modalities such as computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging are not available.
우리나라 중소기업의 생산성, 기술혁신, 기술추격 및 특허권의 상관관계에 관한 연구

본 논문은 우리나라 중소기업의 특허권이 생산성, 기술혁신 및 기술추격에 미치는 영향을 정량적으로 분석하였다. 2001년부터 2012년까지 미국특허상표국에 등록된 특허와 한국기업데이터의 재무자료를 병합하여 자료를 구성하였으며,확률적 변경분석법을 이용하여 추정한 우리나라 중소기업의 생산성 변화율에 특허권이 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 생산성, 기술추격 및 규모효과 및배분효율성의 경우 특허권을 갖고 있는 기업이 높았으나 기술혁신의 경우 특허권을 갖고 있지 않은 기업이 높았다. 이와 같은 정량분석을 바탕으로 우수한 기술수준을 보유한 기업 역시 지속적인 기술혁신을 위한 대안 마련이 필요함을 간략하게 제시하였다. This paper measures the relationship among productivity,technological innovation, technological catch-up and patent rights. Forthe empirical investigation, we merged the USPTO patent grants andKED financial statement information between 2001 and 2012. We usedstochastic frontier analysis in order to decompose productivity ofKorean SMEs for the merged data set. Empirical results show thatproductivity growth, technological catch-up, scale component andallocative efficiency of firms having patent rights are higher than thosewithout patent rights, whilst technological innovation of firms withoutpatent rights is higher than that of those having patent rights. Policyimplications are provided based on the empirical results.
