A study was made to find out a new method of calculating the survival rate of a fish population from length composition and growth equation. 1. In the steady state of the fish population, let the total mortality rate be z, the age of complete recruitment a, the oldest age in the catch b and the average between the age of complete recruitment and the oldest age in the catch U_1, then we have U_1=a-b exp{~z(b~a)}/ 1-exp{~z(b~a)}+ 1/z ----- (1) And let b be infinite, then we obtain Z=1/U_1-a ----- (2) 2. Calculating numerical value of U_1 from age composition table and growth equation, and substitute in (1) for it, we may obtain the value of z and e^-z. 3. This method is applied to a case of mackerel and horse mackerel in the coastal waters of Korea, with the following results:

Although plenty of experiments for production of genetically identical twins have been reported, most of these reports were focused on microsurgical bisection of morula stage embryos, and little research has been performed for the production with frozen emb교os. The objective of these experiments were to assess the in vitro and in vitro developmental potential of blastomeres isolated from frozen-thawed 4-cell and 8-cell mouse embryos and to produce the identical multiplets from those embryos. The percentages of isolated 1/4, 2/4, 4/4, (control), 1/8, 2/8, 3/8, 4/8 and 8/8(control) blastomeres of 4-cell and 8-cell mouse emb교os which developed to normal blastocyst were 38.7%, 73.6%, 96.2(control), 15.1%, 40.1%, 65.9%, 88.3%, and 98.5%(control), respectively. The percentages of isolated 1/4, 2/4, 4/4(control), 1/8, 2/8, 3/8, 4/8 and 8/8(control) blastomeres of frozen-thawed 4-cell and 8-cell mouse embryos which developed to normal blastocyst were 35.6%, 68.5%, 100.0%(control), 16.1%, 50.6%, 71.7%, 90.9% and 100.0%(control), respectively. Normal 26 pups were obtained by transfer of 240 blastocyts developed 1, on 1/4 to 8/8 blastomeres. Those 26 pups obtained, 4 identical twins were produced from 2/4, 2/8, 3/8 and 4/8 blastomeres.

Babesia gibsoni infection was diagnosed and treated in three hunting dogs which were hospitalized to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, College of Veterinary Medicine, Seoul National University between April 4 and August 29, 1987. All three dogs revealed severe anemia, hemoglobinuria, splenomegaly and markedly decreased PCV, RBC count and hemoglobin. The anemia was regenerative, as characterized by increased numbers of nucleated erythrocytes, polychromasia, anisocytosis, reticulocytosis. B. gibsoni was identified by examination of blood smear stained with Giemsa stain. The forms of B. gibsoni identified in this report were pleomorphic such as singnet ring, oval, comma, dot and elongated forms. The maximal percentages of erythrocytes infected with one or more B. gibsoni organisms were 39%, 20% and 40%, respectively. The Tick, Haemophysalis longicornis was assumed to be the vector of babesiosis in these cases. Specific treatment consisted of diminazene aceturate and supportive treatment consisted of whole blood transfusion, lactated Ringer's solution, vitamin B complex and broad spectrum antibiotics. All three dogs had convalesced successfully after treatment.

A cheap, simple, and exact method for the preparation of handmade blowgun was studied. The blowgun-dart-adhesive -stand made of plastic syringe shaft was simple and convenient to make a blowgun dart accuratly. The needle end sealing method with wire-lead(solder) made the needle good to secure and simple to make. Because of easy exchangeability, the tail-piece made of yarn and a rivet is able to use permanently. And the materials of this blowgun were inexpensive, common and easily obtainable. This blowgun dart had various capacity up to 12ml.

During the last three decades considerable advances has been made in goat embryo production and transfer technology. The Korean native black goat is the most useful domestic ruminant in this country for biological investigation and application because it has a lot of merits such as relatively short generation period (1 vs 2 year for a cow), easy of handling, well adaptation, high fertility, convenient and inexpensive. This article covers the methods of superovulation, estrus synchronization, embryo collection and transfer techniques, pregnancy diagnosis and subsequent pregnancy and kidding rates for the production of transgenic Korean native black goats. More than one hundred goat kids have been produced as a result of our transgenic goat project via microinjection of foreign gene into pronuclei, in vitro culture, transfer of various stages of fresh and frozen-thawed microinjected embryos into oviducts or uteri of recipient does. We have got two transgenic goats carrying a transgene targeting the expression of recombinant human granulocyte colony stimulating factor (hG-CSF) to the mammary gland so far. Since collection and transfer of embryos in this species is usually accomplished by laparotomy, exteriorization of the reproductive tract for surgical embryo collection leads to the formation of post-operative adhesions. Nonsurgical or laparoscopic technique to reduce adhesions from repeated surgeries has great advantages in improving embryo production and transfer especially from valuable donors. We will discuss this later.
동결보존한 마우스 집합배의 생존성과 chimera의 생산에 관한 연구

The present study was carried out to investigate the viability of frozen-thawed aggregated mouse embryos and to produce the chimeras. Different phenotypic embryos were obtained by mating ICR female mice with ICR or CBA male mice. The aggregated morulae were produced following aggregation of embryos at 4-, 8- and 12- to 16-cell stage. The desirable stage for the aggregation of the mouse embryos was 8- to 16-cell stage. The post-thawed in vitro survival rates of aggregated embryos in glycerol, DMSO and ethylene glycerol were 51.5, 78.6 and 69.4%, respectively. Although the higher survival was obtained in DMSO, there were no significant differences in the survival rates among the three cryoprotectants. A total of 155 frozen-thawed aggregated embryos were transferred to 11 recipient mice, 3 out of 7 offspring were born to overt chimera. These experiments have proven that mouse chimeras can be obtained from forzen-thawed aggregated embryos.
