Theoretical Derivation of Minimum Mean Square Error of RBF based Equalizer

        이정식,산카 한국통신학회 2006 韓國通信學會論文誌 Vol.31 No.8

In this paper, the minimum mean square error (MSE) convergence of the RBF equalizer is evaluated and compared with the linear equalizer based on the theoretical minimum MSE. The basic idea of comparing these two equalizers comes from the fact that the relationship between the hidden and output layers in the RBF equalizer is also linear. For the purpose of theoretically evaluating exact minimum MSE for both RBF and linear equalizer, a linear time dispersive channel whose order is one is selected. As extensive studies of this research, various channel models are selected, which include linearly separable channel, slightly distorted channel, and severely distorted channel models. In this work, the theoretical minimum MSE for both RBF and linear equalizers were computed, compared and the sensitivity of minimum MSE due to RBF center spreads was analyzed. It was found that RBF based equalizer always produced lower minimum MSE than linear equalizer, and that the minimum MSE value of RBF equalizer was obtained with the center spread parameter which is relatively higher (approximately 2–10 times more) than variance of AWGN. As a result of that, it leads to the better bit error rate. This work provides an analytical framework for the practical training of RBF equalizer system.

      • Gait and tremor assessment for patients with Parkinson’s disease using wearable sensors

        Shyam V. Perumal,산카 한국통신학회 2016 ICT Express Vol.2 No.4

Typically, subjects with Parkinson’s disease (PD) display instances of tremor at an early stage of the disease and later on develop gait impairments and postural instability. In this research, we have investigated the effect of using both gait and tremor features for an early detection and monitoring of PD. Various features were extracted from the data collected from the wearable sensors and further analyzed using statistical analysis and machine learning techniques to find the most significant features that would best distinguish between the two groups: subjects with PD and healthy control subjects. The analysis of our results shows that the features of step distance, stance and swing phases, heel and normalized heel forces contributed more significantly to achieving a better classification between the two groups in comparison with other features. Moreover, the tremor analysis based on the frequency-domain characteristics of the signal including amplitude, power distribution, frequency dispersion, and median frequency was carried out to identify PD tremor from atypical Parkinsonism tremor.

Throughput and Delay of Single-Hop and Two-Hop Aeronautical Communication Networks

Yufeng Wang,Mustafa Cenk Ertürk,Jinxing Liu,나인호,산카,Salvatore Morgera 한국통신학회 2015 Journal of communications and networks Vol.17 No.1

Aeronautical communication networks (ACN) is an emerging concept in which aeronautical stations (AS) are considered as a part of multi-tier network for the future wireless communication system. An AS could be a commercial plane, helicopter, or any other low orbit station, i.e., Unmanned air vehicle, high altitude platform. The goal of ACN is to provide high throughput and cost effective communication network for aeronautical applications (i.e., Air traffic control (ATC), air traffic management (ATM) communications, and commercial in-flight Internet activities), and terrestrial networks by using aeronautical platforms as a backbone. In this paper, we investigate the issues about connectivity, throughput, and delay in ACN. First, topology of ACN is presented as a simple mobile ad hoc network and connectivity analysis is provided. Then, by using information obtained fromconnectivity analysis, we investigate two communication models, i.e., single-hop and two-hop, in which each source AS is communicating with its destination AS with or without the help of intermediate relay AS, respectively. In our throughput analysis, we use the method of finding the maximum number of concurrent successful transmissions to derive ACN throughput upper bounds for the two communication models. We conclude that the two-hop model achieves greater throughput scaling than the single-hop model for ACN and multihop models cannot achieve better throughput scaling than two-hop model. Furthermore, since delay issue is more salient in two-hop communication, we characterize the delay performance and derive the closed-form average end-to-end delay for the two-hop model. Finally, computer simulations are performed and it is shown that ACN is robust in terms of throughput and delay performances.
