        서울시 내 민감계층 이용시설에서 오염물질의 분포특성

        The purpose of this study was to characterize the concentration of and evaluate the pollution level of indoor air pollutants among the public-use facilities located in Seoul that are mainly used by medically sensitive users. The data used in this study were analyzed based on the supervision data provided by Seoul Metropolitan Government Research Institute of Public Health and the Environment. There were 399 nursery schools, 188 medical facilities, 42 elderly care facilities and 96 postnatal care centers. The indoor air pollutants to be investigated were analyzed for PM10, CO2, HCHO, TAB and CO. Through the analysis, it was found that among the surveyed pollutants, TAB levels exceeded the criteria most often, in 54 facilities. Among the surveyed facilities, nursery schools exceeded the criteria most often, in 49 facilities. There was a statistically significant difference between the pollutants in each facility (p<05). However, considering the characteristics of the data used in this study, additional factors should be investigated for factors affecting the concentration of each indoor air pollutant for a more rational evaluation.

        The Least You Should Know about Korean EFL Writers

        This paper aimed to examine what poses difficulties for Korean EFL learners in acquiring English writing skills. With three Korean EFL writers and two EFL teachers, retrospective interviews were used to identify particular needs of Korean EFL writers and the possible disadvantages those writers have in adjusting to English writing styles. Interviews also showed what was behind Korean EFL writers’ problems with English writing. The findings of this study would serve to scaffold more effective EFL writing instruction.

        Polymer-waveguide Bragg-grating Devices Fabricated Using Phase-mask Lithography

        Polymeric optical waveguide devices with Bragg gratings have been investigated, for implementing tunable lasers and wavelength filters used in wavelength-division-multiplexed optical communication systems. Owing to the excellent thermo-optic effect of these polymers, wavelength tuning is possible over a wide range, which is difficult to achieve using other optical materials. In this study the phase-mask technology, which has advantages over the conventional interferometeric method, was introduced to facilitate the fabrication of Bragg gratings in polymeric optical waveguide devices. An optical setup capable of fabricating multiple Bragg gratings simultaneously on a 4-inch silicon wafer was constructed, using a 442-nm laser and phase mask. During fabrication, some of the diffracted light in the phase mask was totally reflected inside the mask, which affected the quality of the Bragg grating adversely, so experiments were conducted to solve this issue. To verify grating uniformity, two types of wavelengthfiltering devices were fabricated using the phase-mask lithography, and their reflection and transmission spectra were measured. From the results, we confirmed that the phase-mask method provides good uniformity, and may be applied for mass production of polymer Bragg-grating waveguide devices.

        공공캠페인에서 메시지 지향성과 해석 수준이 메시지 효과에 미치는 영향

        효과적인 공공캠페인을 위해서는 사람들이 자발적으로 캠페인에 참여할 수 있도록 유도하 는 것이 필요한데 메시지 구성이 하나의 요소가 될 수 있다. 이에 본 연구는 공익 메시지 구성 시 메시지 지향성(개인 지향/타인 지향)과 이슈와의 심리적 거리(가까운 거리/먼 거리)가 메 시지 효과(메시지에 대한 태도, 행동 의도)에 미치는 영향을 살펴보고자 한다. 실험 연구 결과, 타인 지향성 메시지가 개인 지향성 메시지보다 메시지에 대한 태도에 긍정적 영향을 미치는 것 으로 나타났다. 또한 메시지 지향성과 심리적 거리감 간의 상호작용 효과가 발견되었다. 구체적 으로 심리적 거리감이 가까운 경우, 개인 지향 메시지가 타인 지향 메시지보다 높은 행동 의도를 유도하였다. 반면 심리적 거리가 먼 경우, 타인 지향 메시지가 개인 지향 메시지보다 높은 행동 의도를 유도하는 것으로 나타났다. 그러나 메시지 태도에 대해서는 메시지 지향성과 심리적 거 리감 간의 상호작용 효과가 나타나지 않았다. 이러한 결과는 공공캠페인 실천 의도를 높이려는 실무자에게 다양한 시사점을 제공할 것이다. Drawing upon the construal level theory, this study investigates how message orientation of public campaign (self-oriented vs other-oriented) interacts with construal level (high vs low) to influence attitude toward the message and behavioral intention. Results showed that other-oriented message were more likely to induce positive attitude toward the message than self-oriented message . However, the level of behavioral intention was similar regardless of message orientation. Furthermore, we found the significant interaction effects between message orientation and construal level. For low-construal level, self-oriented messages led to greater behavioral intention than other-oriented message. In contrast, for high-construal level, other-oriented messages led to greater behavioral intention than self-oriented message. Findings of this study offer theoretical and practical implications.

        Korean EFL Learners’ Understanding of Polysemous Preposition Senses

        This paper examined how well Korean EFL university students recognize the multiple senses of high-frequency polysemous English prepositions. With 10 target prepositions―after, against, behind, for, in, into, off, on, over, and through―40 undergraduates took a choice test asking them to fill in the blanks with the correct prepositions. The results of the test revealed that the students' knowledge of the target words was rather limited. Interviews were conducted to discover what was behind their failure to make the most of the prepositions. It turned out that most of the students interviewed had an overlysimplistic understanding of what prepositions have to offer, which in turn has led them to give prepositions a low priority in their study of English. The findings of the study suggest that the students in the study need to be helped to take a more proactive approach to learning prepositions.

        Achieving Cohesion in Korean EFL Writingin Terms of the Given-New Contract

        This paper is an investigation of what makes it difficult for Korean EFL writers to create a logical sequence of sentences. With 26 Korean university EFL students, this study sought to find out why cohesion suffered in their English writing. The Given-New Contract (GNC) was used to identify less cohesive sequence of sentences in student essays. The findings showed that the Korean students had a decided preference for personal sentence subjects, contributing little to cohesion in terms of the GNC. Student interviews revealed that such preference had to do with their lack of understanding of the nature of English inanimate subjects. One implication of the present study is that sentence subject choice should be a primary consideration in achieving cohesion, and that the effectiveness of the GNC would be more obvious to Korean EFL writers when they come to understand that English offers a wider range of subject choice than Korean.

        Intermediate level Korean EFL Learners' Knowledge of Different Meanings of English Basic Words

        This paper was an examination of how much knowledge Korean EFL students had of basic English words. Thirty-two Korean university EFL students took a completion test, which required them to fill the blank with 10 target words - busy, cheap, difficult, hard, heavy, poor, rich, rough, shy, and slow. The test revealed that the students had a grossly limited understanding of the target words. Their inadequate knowledge of such basic words also manifested itself when asked to write all the meanings of each target word they knew. Fifteen students were interviewed to find out why they failed to use such basic words in the test. Interviews showed that the students have tended to make light of basic words on the mistaken assumption that they knew enough about those words. The students also reported that they have had little exposure to English words in a variety of different contexts outside the classroom, which would contribute little to forming a well-rounded concept of word meanings. The findings of this study suggest that the students need to realize that knowing a word means knowing many of the different meanings of the word; knowing basic words adequately is a huge part of vocabulary knowledge.

        A Look at L1 Influences on L2 Literacy Skills

        This paper explored L1 influences on the acquisition of L2 literacy skills. It has been generally assumed that L1 literacy skills have, directly or indirectly, an impact on subsequent L2 literacies. Based on this assumption, contrastive rhetoric was examined in order to look at the relationship between language and culture. Particularly, a great deal of attention was given to show how ways of thinking in L1 affect linguistic choices in L2. The issue of language transfer was, then, discussed to see the influence of L1-based elements on comprehending and producing L2 text. Next, schema theory was addressed to examine how the differences between L1 and L2 reading bear on L2 reading. This study suggested that Korean EFL learners be able to raise the consciousness level about contrastive rhetoric by writing journals that focus on the differences in logic between Korean and English. It also indicated that L2 learners should be allowed to use their L1 knowledge as long as the L1 comes into play at least at the early stages of L2 learning.
