The aims of this paper are to investigate the semantic properties of Korean adnominal endings '-eun' and '-eul', and to locate their meanings in the Korean modal system. First, I examine the previous studies which describe '-eun' and '-eul' in terms of 'realis' and 'irrealis', and point out some characteristics of '-eun' and '-eul'. Second, I compare 'irrealis' which is expressed by '-eul' with 'probability' or 'intention' which are expressed by '-gess-'. I insist that '-gess-' express speaker's performative act toward the unreal proposition, while '-eul' express only the property of the proposition, '-gess-' has the semantic ambiguity while '-eul' has semantic vagueness, and '-gess-' is selected by speaker's subjective attitude, while '-eul' is often used by syntactic requirement. Third, I examine the status of 'reality' category in the Korean grammar. I suggest that 'reality modality' should be regarded as a separated subcategory in company with epistemic and act modality, but I oppose to label 'reality category' as 'mood'.
