I am not interested here in a general discussion of a concept whose roots and implications penetrate so many areas of contemporary social discourse. My concern must be limited to some of the implications the notion of alienation has for the theory of mass culture, and it is this vien that a few observation must now be made. The chief assumption of the mass culture interpretation in this respect is that contemporary human beings have recently been undergoing a process of 'self-alienation'. This process has reached a point where mass society has to be explained in terms of the theory of alienation. This theory is seen as highly concomitant with older theories of the mass, based on its rootlessness, traditionlessness, hostility towards the central institutions of society, and lack of piety. Not only does the conception of alienation not contradict these beliefs, it actually gives sophisticated explanation of the phenomena they intend to describe.
