      • Scattering Studies on the Order-order Transitions in Block Copolymer Solutions

Vol.10 No.1

The phase behavior of a symmetric styrene-isoprene (SI) diblock copolymer in styrene-selective solvents was investigated by in-situ small angle X-ray scattering on shear-oriented solutions. When marginally good solvent was used, intriguing morphological change among close-packed spheres, body-centered cubic spheres, and hexagonally packed cylinders has been observed by varying temperature presumably due to the reduced repulsive interaction. We have shown that the temperature-induced changes in micellar characteristics, particularly in the mean aggregation number, can be quantified in dilute solution, and that this information provides a good guideline to interpret the observed order-order transitions of block copolymer solutions in high concentration. Two nearly symmetric SI copolymers containing perdeuterated block (PS-dPI and dPS-PI) were synthesized and the scattered intensity for these solutions was measured as a function of temperature on the 30 m NG7 spectrometer at NIST. The experimental results obtained demonstrate that the softening of inter-micelle potential with decrease in aggregation number would be the key feature for the various phase transitions.

Vol.17 No.1

The mid-eighteenth century, called Pre-Classical period, was the transitional period between the Baroque and the mature-Classical period. The center of cultural activity shifted from the church to the salon. The grandeur and powerful emotions that characterized Baroque art gradually disappeared; instead, the pleasant and simple galant style became popular in courtly and aristocratic circles. Music was regareded as a social accomplishment, and the intimate art of chamber music became popular among professional musicians as well as amateurs. Pre-Classical composers expressed their musical ideas in clear and logical formal structures, exhibiting the influence of the dominant philosophy of the time emboded in the Enlightenment movement. Consequently, the development of chamber music coincided with the developments in sonata form. Sonata form, which provides much opportunity for dramatic contrast and unity within itself, emerged from several preexisting fromal structures, including binary and ternary forms. This new form reached its maturity at the end of the 1780s. It was then employed in almost every genre of instrumental music of the Classical period. During this formative period between 1760 and 1780, sonata form exhibited enormous diversity. Johann Christian Bach(1735-1782), the youngest son of Johann Sebastian Bach, was one of the most representative composers of this transitional period. His compositions exhibited the most characteristic features of his time; yet his originality was preserved intact. His influence on the development of a mature classical style and form is as significant as his well-known influence on young Mozart. A prolific composer, Bach wrote approximately 450 compositions for almost every genre that was common at that time. Best known for his operas and symphonies and keyboard works, Bach's chamber works also display high craftsmanship and genuine concern for formal structures. The majority of Bach's chamber works, particularly the quartets and quintets, were written during the 1770s and 1780s, at the peak of his creative life. His skillful use of the woodwind instruments in these chamber compositions created diverse color effects. Of the fifteen quartets and nine quintets, most are scored for mixed instrumentation, including one or two woodwinds. Among his chamber works, the Six Quintets for Flute, Oboe, Violin, Viola, and Cello, Op. 11 are regarded as the most important pieces. The unusual combination of instruments, the immense variety of colorful effects, and the singing melodic lines reveal the genuine charm of Bach. Three quintets out of Opus 11 have three movements and three have two movements. All of the first movements are in sonata form, as are the second movements of the first and the sixth quintets. All but one of the sonata-form movements have three clearly distinguished sections: the exposition, development, and recapitulation sections. The second movement of the sixth quintet is in sonata from without a development section. These eight movements demonstrate the common features found in sonata form of the Pre-Classical era. In addition, Bach's individuality is clearly exhibited in these movements. Therefore, this study concentrates on the examination of the use of sonata form in the sonata-form movements of Opus 11. To assess the historical significance of the Opus 11 quintets, and Bach's handling of sonata form, the author also examined sonata-form movements from selected chamber works by his contemporaries. In summary, Bach's music is Italian in tone; however, the Germanic inheritance is evident in the use of polyphonic texture, harmonic depth, and richness of instrumentation. His concern for instrumental color is highly advanced for his time and he virtually pioneers this color effects in an ensemble works. His skillful use of sonata form and instrumentation is the pathway that Mozart promoted.

Vol.0 No.64

In the domestic STEAM program, the convergence rate of the moral subject is low, and there is a lack of research on in - depth theory and contents. I think that the lack of convergence between moral and science is due to the lack of exploration of in - depth theories and contents about STEAM education. In the fusion of subject, STEAM education does not easily approach the moral because it is easy to consider efficiency only from the perspective of dichotomy separating existing fact and value. So I think epistemological discussion is necessary. From the point of view of the personal knowledge, all knowledge, including the scientific knowledge as well as the moral knowledge, cannot be separately from the cognitive subject. Because the whole experience of the cognitive subject is dissolved in all kind of knowledge. So I think that the possibility of convergence of moral knowledge and scientific knowledge in elementary STEAM education is examined from this epistemological point of view.

Vol.0 No.50

Giambattista Basile wrote Tale of Tales (or Pentamerone) in the Neapolitan language of the 15th century. This work, which contains 50 strange and mystic stories, is the foundation of various stories that we are familiar with today, including Cinderella, Puss in Boots, Sleeping Beauty, and Hansel and Gretel. As the Logos tradition is deeply rooted in Italy, the work written in the Neapolitan language did not receive much attention, but its artistic value was reevaluated after Croce focused on and translated it into Italian at the end of the 19th century. Generally, when talking about Baroque literature in the history of Italian literature, only Marinismo, the poetics by Giovan Battista Marino, is mentioned. However, Pentamerone by Basile, written in the Neapolitan language, is a major work of Italian Baroque literature that carries distinct Baroque characteristics distinguished from mannerism, Romanticism, and illusionism. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate the life of the author Basile and identify the characteristics of the Italian Baroque aesthetics by analyzing Pentamerone. In particular, the study attempts to investigate how the Baroque style, with its various interpretations, may be understood in Italy.

Vol.0 No.48

Pratolini grew up in Florence, a microcosm of cultural, political, philosophical, and economic confusion in Europe during the early part of the twentieth century; he used the city as the background for most of his works. In particular, via del Corno in Cronache di poveri amanti and Sanfrediano in Le ragazze di Sanfrediano are described as places that symbolize the early twentieth-century history of a Florence that was rife with confusion, which still exists today. via del Corno, on which Cronache di poveri amanti is based, is seen through the eyes of the youth who took to the streets in a Florence that had succumbed to the totalitarianism and dictatorship of the early fascist regime. Le ragazze di Sanfrediano revolves around Sanfrediano and depicts the life and crises of the Florentines who were chased away to the other side of the river, where they led miserable lives after giving up their land to rich British and American ladies. This paper aims to compare and analyze how the history and crises of twentieth-century Florence became part of Pratolini’s literature, by delving into his description of these two different places in Florence in two of his novels.
