V. S. Naipaul’s In a Free State and Guerrillas: The De-centered Selves in the Multi-cultural World

This paper traces out the question of both constructing self and pursuing personal autonomy in V. S. Naipaul’s two novels, In a Free State and Guerrillas. Naipaul’s interest in his novels, as he focuses on human beings who exist in the post-colonial world, is in how the characters in the two novels are de-centered and fragmented after colonialism. Basically Naipaul tries to show that some characters in the novels struggle variably to find their own selves, but have the pretty difficulties in constructing the authentic self. Thus the resulting aspect is that the individual condition of existence in post-colonial society can be made in the complex web in which various ideological forces between the old and the new world interact.

Growth and mineral (Cs) absorption of glasswort (Salicornia europaea L.) cultivated in flowerpot soil watered with solar salt solution

Growth and mineral absorption of glasswort cultivated in flowerpot soil watered with 1, 2, and 3% solar salt solution was evaluated in relation to soil bacterial variation. Seedlings of glasswort naturally germinated in tidal mudflat were transplanted to flowerpots along with soil from the tidal mudflat field and further cultivated in the laboratory. The flowerpots were watered with 1, 2, and 3% (w/v) solar salt solution including 50 mg/L of Cs <please add what Cs full term before abbreviation i.e. cesium (Cs)> inducing pot soil to be more saline and contaminated with Cs. One, three, and seven of the 36 glassworts were cultivated in 1, 2, 3% saline soil withered <lacks meaning>. The total dry weight of glasswort grown in 1, 2, and 3% saline soil for 60 days was approximately 493, 335, and 225 g, respectively. Contents of K, Cs, Mg, Ca, and Fe accumulated in glasswort decreased but content of Na accumulated in glasswort increasing proportionally with the increase of soil salinity. Bacteria detected from the 1, 2, and 3% saline soil by temperature gradient gel electrophoresis resulted in the discovery of 30, 24, and 17 species, respectively. Thus, a soil salinity of above 1% may be an environmental factor to physiologically limit growth and mineral absorption of glasswort, therefore leading to increased variation of soil bacterial community.

Isolation of Xenobiotic-degrading Bacteria and Analysis of Bacterial Community Variation in Soil Microcosm Contaminated with Xenobiotics

A natural forest soil was contaminated artificially with mixture of tetraethyleneglycol (TEG), 1-amino-2-propanol (APOL), diethylene glycolmonomethylether (DGMME), diethyleneglycolmonoethylether (DGMEE),tetrahydrothiophene-1,1-dioxide (THT), 1-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone (MP), and tetramethylammoniumhydroxide (TMAH) but was not for control test. Both contaminated and uncontaminated soil microcosms were cultivated at 20oC for 10 weeks under humid conditions, which were named the xenobio microcosm (XM) and conventional microcosm (CM), respectively. DNA was directly extracted from both the microcosms every 2 weeks from 2nd to 14th week during incubation. Temperature gradient gel electrophoresis (TGGE) patterns for variable region (V3) of 16S-rDNA amplified with DNA extracted from the XM were changed more variably than those from the IM. The mineralization of xenobiotics in the XM was analyzed every 2 weeks. TEG, DGMME,DGMEE and TMAH were mineralized completely in 16 weeks, and APOL and MP were in 20 weeks. However,THT was not mineralized completely for 20 weeks. TEG-, APOL-, DGMME-, DGMEE-, THT-, MP-,TMAH-degrading bacterium isolated from the XM was Burkholderia sp. SK100101, Burkholderia sp. SK100102, Arthrobacter sp. SK100103, Dyella sp. SK100104, Phyllobacterium sp. SK100105, Burkholderia sp. SK100106, Acidovorax sp. SK100107, respectively. These results indicated that the bacterial species that had not been exposed to the specific xenobiotics used in this research could adapt metabolically to the xenobiotics in 14 weeks.

The Authorial Agency and Narrative Production in Thomas Nashe's The Unfortunate Traveller

This paper traces out the authorial agency and the ideological narrative production through Thomas Nashe’s The Unfortunate Traveller. The relationship between author and literary environment in the English Renaissance age should be considered to understand the text. In the English Renaissance age the relationship between author and readership had drastically been changing as the dynamic period corresponding to the cultural and social changes shows the various readership that requires new taste. In the process Thomas Nashe in his work had made at once conscious design and unconscious production in which a strong authorial agency has been fruitful and the bourgeois ideology have been unintentionally produced. Nashe’s unconscious design may be understood as the political unconscious in which Frederic Jameson has coined. In order to understand the text’s narrative structure, Terry Eagleton’s concept of ideology has been applied to the text. Overall, Nashe’s text can be interpreted as one of the important narratives to understand the relationship between author and text in the English Renaissance age because it shows a variety of voices in which authors, text and its reader are closely connected together.

˝역사˝ 에서 여성 자율성을 찾기: 신 역사주의와 페미니즘사이의 교차점

이 글은 스티븐 그린블라트Stephen Greenblatt 에 의해 본격화 되었던 문학 문화 이론, 신 역사주의의 문화접근 방법론이 페미니즘 이론에 영향을 끼쳤으며 상호 공유 할 수 있는 부분이 있다는 것을 보여준다. 지금까지는 대체적으로 역사적 사건에 대한 해석과 설명들이 남성 중심적이고 단일하며 실재에 근거를 두면서 여성의 가치들을 배제시키고 여성들에 의해 이루어진 의미와 그들의 의식을 비합리적이면서 주변적이고 비 자연스러운 것으로 보는 경향이 있었다. 하지만 신 역사주의의 비평 방법들 즉, 지금까지 중심적 역할을 해왔던 남성 중심적, 지배 엘리트 중심적인 것, 나아가서는 텍스트의 자율성을 타파하려는 노력들은 역설적으로 페미니즘 문학문화 이론의 중심적 논리 - 즉, 남성 여성의 이분법 타파 내지는 가부장적이면서 남성을 우월하고 여성을 열등한 것으로 보는 편견을 혁파하려는 시도 등- 에 상당부분 일맥상통한다고 볼 수 있다. 즉 그런 방법론 등이 여성 표현과 자율성을 드러내는 결과를 가져왔다고 할 수 있다. 우선, 신 역사주의자들은 여성을 역사와 문화 분석에서 중심에서 벗어난 부수적이며 부가적인 것으로 보기보다는 주체적 문화 분석의 재원으로 보는 경향이 있다. 또한 프랑스의 철학자이면서 문화이론가인 미셀 푸코Michel Foucault의 권력이론에 그들의 이론적 기반을 두는 신 역사주의자들은 문학작품에서 여성의 모습을 다양한 문화적 양상을 보여주는 중요한 문화 분석의 중요한 특성으로 보고자 한다. 그리고 마지막으로 문학작품과 비 문학작품을 서로 상호 교환할 수 있는 것으로 보는 신 역사 주의자들의 주장은 본질적으로 내재한 성 아이덴티티(sexual identity)를 해체시켜서 성 관계(gender relationship)를 단일한 개념으로 보는 것에 반박한다. 따라서 여성을 역사의 수면위로 끌어내는 데 공헌을 했다고 볼 수 있다. 그러므로 설사 신 역사주의자들의 비평 방법론이 여성들에 대한 구체적 표현에는 부족함이 있다하더라도 여성의 가치를 한 단계 끌어 올렸다고 볼 수 있다.

Effect of rounding on flow-induced forces on a square cylinder

A numerical study has been carried out to elucidate the effects of rounding the sharp edges on flow-induced forces on a square cylinder immersed in a laminar cross flow. Rounding reduces both the upstream stagnation pressure and the downstream base pressure. Consequently, competition between these two pressure reductions yields the minimum drag on the cylinder when its edges are partially rounded. It was also found that the leading-edge rounding is mainly responsible for the topological change thus the drag reduction, while the trailing-edge rounding alone just enhances lift fluctuation. However, trailing-edge rounding plays a role of stabilizing the flow when all of the four edges are rounded.

The purpose of this study was to optimum formulation conditions for the preparation of retort pouched marshsnail Senisulcospira livertina soup with curled mallow Malva verticillata and optimized the sterilization process. Samples were prepared according to the central composite rotatable design (CCRD) by encrypting the amounts of marshsnail broth, boiled marsh snail and blanched curled mallow, which are the main ingredients of retort pouched marsh snailsoup with curled mallow. Raw marsh snail was sorted by size of 4-5 level, and then marsh snail was washed andremoved sediment in a water tank for 3 min, then boiled at 100°C for 10 min, and then directly separated by handto prepared a boiled marsh snail. The marsh snail cube is prepared by combining blanched at 100°C for 10 sec curledmallow (27 g) and green onion (20 g) with boiled marsh snail (27 g) and soybean paste (10 g). The marsh snail cube wasplaced with marsh snail broth (416 g) in a retort pouch film. Subsequently, sterilization (118.0°C, 25 min; F0 value, 12min) and cooling were performed using a steam retort.

Maria Edgeworth's Leonora and Helen: Habermasian 'the Public Sphere' and Female Agency

This paper traces out the fact that a 19th-century British female writer, Maria Edgeworth had represented some conflict and mediation between the public sphere and the private self through her two novels, Leonora and Helen. A German sociologist, Jűrgen Habermas suggested 'the public sphere' where some literary fictions played an important role in the consolidation of the space, along with the conditions for rational public interaction. Habermasian concept, 'the public sphere can be adapted to Edgeworth's novels, signifying the important literary public sphere. As the public sphere was limited to the political realm, the literary public sphere had appeared, functioning some important ideological mode, validating the emerging bourgeois identity. Edgeworth's novels can belong to a part of the literary public sphere in which women have to play a great role in reconstructing the public sphere. In the process, the feminine subjectivity may be formed in the public sphere. Therefore, Edgeworth's novels have contributed to constructing the cultural politics of the emerging public sphere.
