The binder plays important roles in determining the quality of pigment coating. In addition to its primary role of binding the pigment to the base paper, the binder performs several other important functions. The binder, also referred to as the adhesive, is the dominant in the aqueous phase of the formulation. Thus it plays a major role in determining viscosity, rheology, water release, and setting time for the coating. Latices based on styrene-butadiene dominate the market for synthetic paper coating binders. Consumption is high and is expected to increase further due to the present tendeyncy toward high-solids coating. The purpose of this study is understanding the impact of various parameters of latex(i.e. Tg, Particle size) affecting prontabilities and optical properties of the coated papers, as well as providing basic information on the use of amphoteric latex for improving print qualities of coated papers. Recently, amphoteric latices, Which are cationic at low pH's but turn anionic at high pH's have attracted interests of paper scientists and engineers. Therefore we investigated the effect of the Tg(glass transition temperature) and particle size of amphoteric latex on the coating qualities. We also studied the effect of mixing ratios (Amphoteric / Anionic)of latex on the coating qualities. Our results showed that Tg and particle size of amphoteric latex have to be controlled for optimizing coated paper qualities. The formulation consisting of 10 parts of amphoteric latex and 5 parts of anionic latex gave best results in ink receptivity, smoothness, air permeability, opacity and sheet gloss. If the results hold for the industrial paper coatings, the amount of expensive amphoteric latex can be reduced while achieving best available printing quality.

This study was carried out to improve coating structure by controlling the electrostatic interaction of coating components and by changing the coating structure of coated paper prepared with amphoteric and anionic lances. The results indicated that amphoteric latex copolymerized with carboxylic and amine groups had stronger interaction with other coating components than anionic latex with branched carboxylic group by controlling pH. These properties of amphoteric latex showed positive effects on viscosity, rheology, and supernatant sediment of coating color. The coated paper using amphoteric latex had also produced more porous and smoother coverage of the coating layer than that using anionic latex. . This porous and smooth coating layer showed better optical properties and printability than those of anionic latex such as opacity, porosity, ink set-off. and wet ink receptivity.

This paper was intended to evaluate the effect of the blending condition of pigments on the packing structure of coating color and the interaction between pigments and lattices on the optical and interior properties of coated paper. It has been studied many ways to modify the coating structure to induce the interaction among coating components as followings ; 1) to use dispersant for pigment, 2) to control the charge density and the type of surface charge of latex, 3) to support the water retention by adding water retention agent or flow modifier. This paper was performed through the introduction of interaction between pigments which were two kinds of clays and one precipitated calcium carbonate(PCC) and ionic lattices of which anionic and amphoteric respectively under the certain blending condition of pigments where their blending ratio of clays to calcium carbonate was 70pph to 30pph. The reason is that packing volume of pigments was highest in that region and thixotropical behavior appears in measuring rheology of coating color. We measured the properties of coating color, interaction with pigments and latex, and properties of coated paper and its printability. As a results, we could find out that amphoteric latex had a great influence on the interaction with pigments, especially clays, no matter what grade and also affected the coating structure significantly in case that this blending condition was 70(clays) to 30(PCC). It produced a powerful effect on the forming of bulky and smooth coating structure and in turn improved the printability of coated paper.

This study was carried out to determine the effect of the type of plastic pigment on the coat-ing structure and printability of coated paper. Three kinds of plastic pigments(solid-bead type binder type and hollow type) were used for hti purpose. IN this research it was observed that particle shape and structure of plastic pigment had influenced the rheology of coating color the state of packing and the properties of coated paper. Inorganic pigments used in this research were platelike kaolin clay and rhombic calcium carbonate. Three kinds of plastic pigments were blended with two inorganic pigments respec-tively. The combination of pigments were carried out(1) to determined the effect of particle structure of plastic pigment on the state of dispersion of coating color(2) to observe the effect of calendering temperature on the property of coated paper prepared with different plastic pigments. The data indicated that binder and hollow type plastic pigment gave the best results in improving the properties of coated paper such as paper gloss opacity and air pet-meability.
