        19세기 미국 여성문학에 나타난 여성예술가의 초상

        Unlike most nineteenth-century women's texts which faithfully follow and even deepen the dominant male-centered culture and ideology, there are a few texts which women writers have voices and opinions of their own. In the texts I've chosen here, there have appeared a few women artists who are independent, liberated, and resistant enough to question long-standing institutions and conventions that have controlled women's lives for a long time. I will mainly focus on women artist figures that the three most disobedient and opinionated nineteenth century women writers such as Fanny Fem (Sara Willis Parton), Charlotte Perkins Gilman, and Kate Chopin had created. In comparison with the women artist images such as spinsters, mad women, widows, social outcasts that male writers created in their literary texts, women writers created women artists in terms of showing an independent role model, becoming a subject of her life, and crossing the irrationally restricted lines. The woman writer, Ruth Hall from Fanny Fern's Ruth Hall (1855) is the first woman artist figure who reaches economic independence through her creative writing and proves herself to be a woman artist model. The nameless woman artist narrator of Gilman's "The Yellow Wallpaper" (1898) tries to resist against the male-dominated textual space to make herself as well as other artists more unique and of her own element. Edna Pontellier and many other women artists that Kate Chopin created in her texts, including The Awakening(1899), challenge all kinds of then-current barriers such as gender, hetero-sexuality, christianity, marriage institution, and motherhood. In all, images of women artists presented in the above nineteenth-century women writers' texts seem to be much more independent, strong-willed, and challenged than most images presented in the male writers' texts of that age. Although they couldn't reach the aesthetic level and quality of male writers, they needed to build their own subjective space and status in an unfavored society toward women. They needed to establish their own original and independent texts and defy the conventional barrier rather than simply mimic the aesthetics or artistic styles that the male writers had established.

        Challenging Borderlines of Color, Gender, and Class: Josepha and Désirée

        This paper examines the color or unknown racial origin issue that people with mixed blood or women with no family history experienced as addressed by two 19th century women writers, from a post-modern perspective. I try to find some evidences that the seemingly perfect idea, especially white-male dominated systems are nothing but a manipulated apparatus in order to maintain their power and privilege in the two selected texts—Alice Dunbar-Nelson’s “Sister Josepha”(1899) and Kate Chopin’s “Désirée’s Baby”(1892). The above texts have the same backdrop of the Creole society of New Orleans in southern America. Creole women or women of mixed color were basically in a much more vulnerable and complicated situation than white women. The main characters of the two texts lie on the ambiguous borderline between white and black, and they are easily endangered and victimized by racial repression and violence, often escaping only through disguises or deception. However, both women writers try to reveal how a person’s destiny depends on their skin color and reveal the deep-rooted double standard, prejudice and discrimination and how the idea of race, gender, and class is an absurd and hypocritical throughout their characters’ new challenge and tragic lives. According to Lacan’s idea of subject, the subject is not a complete being and can be circulated as the Other. Therefore, it seems that the seemingly perfect white male supremacy can be collapsed; moreover, the typically sub-cultural people, colored orphan girls, can have their own rights and voices. To sum up, the characters on the borderline of color in the two texts suggest some possibilities that the artificial lines by color, gender, and class can not last forever because the lines can not be perfect and absolute ones.

        혼합분포함수를 적용한 최심신적설량에 대한 수문통계학적 빈도분석

        Due to recent increasing heavy snow in Korea, the damage caused by heavy snow is also increasing. In Korea, there are many efforts including establishing disaster prevention measures to reduce the damage throughout the country, but it is difficult to establish the design criteria due to the characteristics of heavy snow. In this study, snowfall frequency analysis was performed to estimate design snow depths using observed snow depth data at Jinju, Changwon and Hapcheon stations. The conventional frequency analysis is sometime limted to apply to the snow depth data containing zero values which produce unrealistc estimates of distributon parameters. To overcome this problem, this study employed mixed distributions based on Lognormal, Generalized Pareto (GP), Generalized Extreme Value (GEV), Gamma, Gumbel and Weibull distribution. The results show that the mixed distributions produced smaller design snow depths than single distributions, which indicated that the mixed distributions are applicable and practical to estimate design snow depths. 최근 우리나라에서 폭설이 증가하고 있으며, 이로 인한 피해액 또한 증가하고 있다. 우리나라는 전국적으로 폭설로 인한 피해를 줄이기 위해 내설 설계기준 마련 등의 노력을 하고 있으나, 강설 자료의 특성으로 기준 설정에 어려움이 있다. 본 연구에서는 우리나라 남부 지역에 있는 진주, 창원, 합천 지점의 적설량에 대한 수문통계학적 빈도분석을 수행하여 최심신적설량에 대한 설계수문량을 정량적으로 산정하였다. 자료의 특성상 연도별 측정값이 ‘0’인 경우가 존재하여 기존의 빈도분석 방법을 적용할 경우 매개변수의 추정이 불가능한 상황도 발생한다. 이러한 문제를 해결하기 위하여 혼합분포함수를 이용하였고, 분포모형으로는 대수정규, 일반화 파레토, 일반화 극치, 감마, 검벨, 와이블 분포를 적용하였다. 적용 결과, 단일분포함수를 적용할 때 보다 혼합분포함수를 적용할 때 확률적설심이 더 작게 산정되었으며, 전체적으로 관측값이 간헐적으로 나타나는 지점에서 혼합분포함수의 적용성이 우수한 것으로 판단된다.

        호손의「주홍글씨」: 헤스터의 성과 청교도 사회의 권력

        Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter : Hester's Sexuality and the Puritan Power In this paper, I focus on the relation between Hester's sexual transgression (adultery) and the power of the puritan society in the 17th century presented in Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter (1850). The major topic in the paper is to examine the novel in the way that Hester's adultery implies woman's protest and subversion against phallocentric power and law which had exclusively suppressed woman's own idea, desire, and voice. In the novel, Dimmesdale, who is directly involved in "the A accident," uses his political and religious power based on language, reason, and logocentric ideology to justify and to beautify his concealment of truth of the scarlet letter. In this context, Hester's physical resistance to male-dominated world reveals that the puritan society system should be faulty and its power has to be reorganized on the basis of legal equality and inner truth between the sexes.
