The purpose of this study is to examine into diplomatic achievements caused by some examples of sending a hostage from Lieguo to Qin. First, there were seven examples of sending a hostage to Qin in total. It is worth noting that the status of the hostages to Qin was mainly the crown prince of the other country. The crown prince is the next heir to the throne. The crown prince being sent as a hostage mean that the situation was so urgent, and that the exchange of the hostage between both parties took place on the absolute unequal state. Also it also shows that Qin had the leadership in diplomatic relations. Second, there were some diplomatic achievements in sending the crown prince as a hostage. Sending Cang, Hantaizhi(the crown prince of Han) to Qin, both Han and Qin formed the military alliance. It was an alliance made by both necessity because Han could avoid the military pressure from Qin and Qin could mobilize Han′s troops when conquering the big nation Chu in southern part. That amicable alliance lasted several years. Other nations such as Che, Wei, and Zhao which sent their crown princes as hostages could keep amicable relation with Qin. However in case of Heng, the crown prince of Che who killed Daifu of Qin because of his personal resentment and escaped, and also because the hostages were sent mainly under Qin′s one-sided pressure, their efforts to maintain peace lasted not so long, and the diplomatic effect of the hostages was not so big. Especially in cases of the hostage who was sent to Qin while Qin tried to conquer.
