An Expository Article on (Genesis 32 and 33)
Vol.4 No.-
Telling a story, if it is done truthfully, is a profound way of transmitting a truthful life of a generation to the next. In this regards, biblical writers are among others most respectful story tellers in its own right. They do their jobs with a great degree of delicate artistry and profound theological intents. Biblical narrative is a window through which God's dealings with his creation, especially his people are unfolded. It is also a mirror which reflects all the divine and human in their complicated mixture. Students of the Scripture are encouraged to explore into this thought-making terrain. Biblical narratives are intended to be retold and reheard by the community of faith. Through the process of retelling the stories, every generation passes its success and failure in relation to God to the next generation. Having this in mind, this article explores the artistry and theological intents of one of most beloved episodes in Jacob's narrative found in Genesis 32 and 33, that is, Jacob's encounters with his brother Esau and a stranger in the midnight at the ford of the Jabbok River. As this article shows, two episodes are skillfully interwoven to the point that each reenforces the other's structure and meaning. The story of Jacob's meeting with a stranger in the midnight is framed by a story of his meeting with Esau. This framing technique by the narrator highlights the central importance of the story of Jacob's meeting with God in order to understand the meaning of Jacob's meeting with Esau.

The transit time of the normal small intestine depends, for the most part, on the neuromuscular integrity of the small bowel and it is said to vary depanding upon various factors such as composition, size, temperature and consistency of the meals, speed of gastric emptying, drugs and emotional disturbances. It has also been well known that the motility of the small bowel is disturbed in the majority of the diseases involving the small intestine and is influenced by reflex disturbances from the diseases outside the gastrointestinal tract. According to the reports from observations made on western people, normally barium-water mixture passes the small intestine in 1 1/2 to 4 hours, pure carbohydrate meal traverses the entire small bowel in 5 hours, the protein meal is somewhat slower in passage and the fatty meal is the slowest in passing the small intestine. However, as yet there has been no detailed available information as to the transit times of barium meal and ordinary foods through the small intestine of healthy Koreans. Employing a serial roentgenological study the author made observations on the transit time of barium-water mixture through the bowel in 70 healthy Korean adults and the transit times of 3 kinds of ordinary mixed foods through the intestinal tract in 3 groups which consisted of 13 normal adults respectively. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. The average transit time of a barium meal through the small intestine was 2.4±1.17 hours. The extreme ranged from 50 minutes to 5 hours. The average transit times of a barium meal through the jejunum, ileum, ascending colon and transverse colon were approximately 1/2 hours, 1.9 hours, 1 1/3 hours and 2 1/3 hours respectively. 2. The average transit times of ordinary mixed solid foods were 4 to 5 hours. The high protein meal traversed the small intestine most rapidly(4 hours on the average), and the average transit times for the high carbohydrate and high fat meals were almost the same(about 5 hours), revealing significant differences between the transit time of a protein meal and that of each of the other meals. The difference between the transit times of high carbohydrate and high fat meals was not significant. 3. No significant difference was observed between the male and female in regards to the transit times of the meals through the intestine. 4. It appears that the passage time of the meals through the small intestine did not correlate with gastric emptying.
