Background and Objectives:asthma have showed somewhat diferent mucosal appearance and pathology, compared to those without asthma. We investigated histopathological features of these patients. Subjects and Method:19 sinusitis patients with asthma who had undergone endo-scopic sinus surgery from April, 1995 through September, 1997, and 53 patients without asthma who had undergone surgery from January, 1997 through July, 1997 were evaluated. We compared the following 7 parameters of sinus mucosal histopa-thology betwen the asthma and non-asthma group by reviewing histopathological slides:basement membrane thickening, goblet cell hyperplasia, subepithelial edema, submucous gland formation, eosinophilic infiltration, lymphocyte infiltration, OMC CT findings, and presence of allergy, which might affect the sinus mucosal pathology. Results:There revealed no statistical difference betwen two groups on presence of allergy, preoperative polyposis, and OMC CT scores. However, the asthma group showed significant basement membrane thickening, goblet cell hyperplasia, and eosinophilic infiltration, which was statisticaly significant. No difference was found between subepithelial edema, submucous gland formation, lymphocyte in-filtration, and polymorphonuclear leukocyte infiltration. Conclusion:Significant histopathological features such as basement ;however, there were no differences owing to the presence of alergy or the extent of preoperative disease. Adequate preoperative manage-ment, close attention during surgery and careful folow-up would be necessary. (Korean J Otolaryngol 2002;45:878-83)
비중격미단부의 보존적 절제와 8자봉합을 이용한 비중격성형술

Background and Objectives:This study evaluated the conservative resection and figure of 8 anchoring suture technique for corecting caudal septal deformities. :Al patients who underwent septoplasty with the above technique were mailed a questionnaire to evaluate their perception of the procedures results. Results:A risk of postoperative aesthetic com-plication rate was rare (4.3%). They reported minimal change of supratip area. Most of the patients (98% ) were relieved from -lained of dull sense on the nasal tip postoperatively. Conclusion:Corection of caudal septal deviation with conservative resection and figure of 8 anchoring suture sems to be an efective and safe method of corecting the functional problems associated with caudal septal deformities.

Background and Objectives:Pediatric endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) is performed for refractory cases of sinusitis that do have not been reported much. The aim of this study is to investigate the prognostic factors afecting the outcomes of pediatric ESS. Materials and Method:A retrospective review of medical records was caried out on 71 patients, 15 years or younger, who had undergone ESS from February, 1995 through January, 2002 at our institution. We clasified them into two groups, one with good outcome, and the other with poor outcome, acording to the postoperative endoscopic findings. We compared the following 8 parameters betwen the two groups:presence of alergy, bronchial asthma, adenotonsillar hypertrophy, previous sinus surgery, degre of polyposis, preoperative disease extent scored with OMC CT finding, blood eosinophil count, and eosinophil infiltration in nasal mucosa. Result:There were no statistical differences between the two groups on the presence of allergy, bronchial asthma, adenotonsillar hypertrophy, previous sinus surgery, degre of polyposis, preoperative disease extent scored with OMC CT finding, blood eosinophil count, and eosinophil infiltration in nasal mucosa. Conclusion:Prognostic rative medication, debridement and irrigation, etc., is more important in pediatric ESS. (Korean J Otolaryngol 2003 ;46 :654-8)
Mixed odor Discrimination Test in Rats Using an 8-odor Olfactometer

Evaluation of olfactory function is as important as morphological study in animal research. However, it is difficult to evaluate the smell function of rats because of underdevelopment of an electrophysiologic measuring device. The aim of this study is to set up an olfactometer for detection of smell function and discriminating ability of mixed odors in normal rats. Eight female Sprague-Dawley rats were used. To make them thirsty, only 5 ml of water was provided for two weeks before the beginning of operant training. Ethyl acetate at 10-4.0 (v/v) concentration was used for S + odorant, and six different concentrations (10-4.0, 10-4.5, 10-5.0, 10-5.5, 10-6.0, 10-6.5) of butanol mixed with ethyl acetate were used for S – odorant. S + and S – stimuli were delivered randomly using an 8-odor olfactometer. Normal rats could discriminate ethyl acetate from ethyl acetate mixed with butanol, down to concentrations of 10-5.5 and 10-6.0 (v/v). The results of this study suggest that an olfactometer is a reliable and accurate device to evaluate olfactory function in rats. It is expected to provide a reliable way to measure real functional changes in many kinds of olfactory research including olfactotoxicants, drug effects, and regeneration studies.
Histologic Study on the Development of Olfactory Mucosa in Rats

Background and Objectives:There is evidence which suggests that mammals have functional olfactory systems at birth orshortly before birth. This study was performed to investigate perinatal development of the olfactory mucosa. Materials andMethods:Sprague-Dawley rats at the 19th gestational day, and of the 1st, 3rd, 7th, 14th, 21st, and 28th postnatal day were sacrificed. The light microscopic investigation of the olfactory mucosa was conducted with hematoxylineosin stain, immunohistochemicalstain for proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) and protein gene product (PGP) 9.5. Results:Number of thecell layers, epithelial thickness, and density of the olfactory receptor cell peaked at the postnatal 14th day. The cells of the basallayer changed from globose cells to basal cell proper with age. The number of the basal cells to the receptor cells decreased withage. PCNA was positive both in the supporting and basal layers. PCNA positivity decreased with age in the supporting layerbut stayed stationary in the basal layer. PGP 9.5 was strongly positive in the olfactory receptor cells, dendrites, and the nervebundles but negative in the supporting and basal layers. Conclusion:The olfactory epithelium proliferated maximally at postnatal14 day, and afterwards the olfactory mucosa tended to show their characteristic maturation with slowed neurogenesis.
