        The Metagonimus species cercaria and metacercaria were seperated each from snail of Semisulcospira sp. and fresh water fish of Zacco platypus in Byongchun stream of Buk Myeon, Chunan City of Korea, and were observed with scanning electron microscope for cercaria and light microscope for metacercaria. The cercaria was divided into two parts, trigonal shaped body and long tapering ended tail. The body part has oral sucker on anterior tip. Several paired ciliated sensory papillae distributed on body surface and around oral sucker. The round shaped metacercaria was surrounded with transparent membrane. The excretory bladder was seen with darkish brown color. This Metagonimus sp. was surely Metagonimus Miyata type based on its morphology of cercaria, local distribution and specific fish host of Zacco platypus. The result of this study suggest that Chunan area is one of the endemic foci of the Metagonimiasis.

      • 대호만 참붕어의 흡충류 피낭유충 감염상

        This study was done in December 1998, for research on the actual condition of the infection status of trematode metacercariae in Pseudorasbora parva caught from Daehoman(pond) located in Sosan-Si, Chungnam. Total of 73 Pseudorasbora parva were examined under stereomicroscope after artificial digestion with pepsin-HCl solution. Three species of metacercariae were found, and each numbers of collected total metacercariae were 157 of Clonorchis sinensis, 124 of Methorchis orientalis and 39,092 of Cyathocotyle orientalis. The average numbers of detected metacercariae per each Pseudorasbora parva were Clonorchis sinensis 2.2, Methorchis orientalis 1.7 and Cyathocotyle orientalis 535.5.

      • 알레르기성 소인이 없는 정상인에서 특이 알레르겐항체 양성율

        This study was designed to evaluate prevalence of allergen-specific antibodies in healthy adults. During Mar. ~ Aug. 2001, 1,925 subjects visited for medical check-up, were inquired to fill out a standardized questionnaire. Among them, 200 subjects who had no current and past allergic disorders were randomly selected for rhe current study and examined for allergen-specific antibodies using Korean inhalant panel of MAST-CLA allergen-specific IgE assay. Among them, 170 persons (85.0%) did not have any positive allergen-specific antibody. Each positive rate of 35 allergen specific antibodies was usually less than 3%, except Cockroach Mix (3.5%), Dermatophagoides farinae(8.5%), Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus(6.0%). Among 30 positive subjects, 19(63.3%) showed one or two allergen-specific antibodies. Although atopic subjects in non-allergic population were not common, few of them showed allergen-specific antibodies in Korean inhalant panel of MAST-CLA. Our results suggested that the standardized questionnaire and MAST-CLA could be an useful tool of a screening test for allergy, showing high specificity and sensitivity.

        Environmental endotoxin exposure influences the severity of asthma in house dust mite allergen sensitized subjects. In the domestic environment high levels of endotoxin are present in reservoir floor and bedding dust. Clothing is known to be an important source of allergen exposure, but it is not yet known if this is so for endotoxin. We determined endotoxin levels from winter upper garment clothing with the Limulus amebocyte lysate assay. The geometric mean (95% CI) endotoxin level from 34 colothing items was 17.540 EU/gm. More recently washed clothing (<2 weeks) contained lower endotoxin levels than less frequently washed clothing (>2 weeks), geometric means (95% CI): 9.772 (3,500~28,440) and 20,420 (16,670~24,950) EU/gm dust restectively (p=.017). These levels are high and similar to endotoxin levels from carpets and bedding. This results suggest that clothing is potentially a major source of endotoxin exposure.

      • 알레르기 환자에서 MAST-CLA 검사의 의의

        To evaluate usefulness of application of MAST-CLA to indetify allergens, authors conducted MAST-CLA allergen-specific IgE assay and collected allergy related symptoms in 118 allergic patients diagnosed at Soonchunhyang University Chunan Hospital during October 1998 through January 2000. The results were as followings; 1. The mean (SD) age was 23.1 (±12.17) years old and teenagers accounted for 33.1% of patients. 2. The frequent allergic symptoms were sneezing (59.3%), rhinorrhea (53.4%), nasal stiffness (44.1%), itching sensation (24.6%), cough or sputum (16.1%), and eye symptom (8.5%) in order. 3. Among these subjects, 62.7% of patients revealed at least more than one specific allergen and 70.3% showed elevated total IgE levels by MAST-CLA. The three most frequent specific allergens were Dermatophagoides farinae (47.5%), Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (45.8%), and house dust (30.5%). 4. While age was not significantly related to positive of both specific allergens and total IgE (P>0.05), sneezing and nasal stiffness were significantly associated with positive of specific allergen and total IgE, respectively (both P<0.05). 5. Total IgE increased with the number of specific allergens, but both specific allergen and total IgE were not significantly related to increases of allergic symptoms (P>0.05). In conclusion, our data suggest that MAST-CLA allergen-specific IgE assay is useful measure for identification of causative allergens in allergic patients, however, it is recommended that more specific allergic antigens should be determined and replaced or added to Korean inhalent panel of MAST-CLA.

        To evaluate usefulness of serum IgE to determine specific allergens, authors conducted priest IgE and MAST-CLA allergen-specific IgE assays in 78 allergic patients diagnosed at Soonchunhyang University Chunan Hospital during October 1998 through July 2000. During the study period, inhalent and food Korean panels were applied in 57 (73.1%) and 21 outpatients (26.9%), respectively. Kappa index was calculated to evaluate the agreement of priest IgE with Total IgE and allergen-specific IgE by MAST-CLA. 1. The men (±SD) age was 13.2 (±14.1) year-old and male accounted for 62.8%. 2. The overall positive rate of priest IgE was 66.7% and mean (±SD) level of priest IgE was 271.2 (±265.6) IU/ml 3. Patients with more than one specific allergen and with elevated total IgE by MAST-CLA were 25 (32.1%) and 33 (42.3%), respectively. 4. Significant agreement between total IgE and allergen-specific IgE was shown, but strength of agreement was slight (Kappa = 0.186, P = 0.046), 5. While no significant agreement between priest IgE and total IgE was observer, the priest IgE agreed significantly with allergen-specific IgE (Kappa = 0.153, P=0.043) In conclusion, our data suggested that serum priest IgE is more likely associated with allergen-specific IgE than total IgE in MAST-CLA assay. Furthermore, it is recommended that Korean panel of MAST-CLA should contain more specific allergens.

      • 일반 스폰지베개 및 깃털베개 커버의 집먼지와 집먼지진드기 투과성

        Previous studies have demonstrated significantly higher house dust mite allergen levels on synthetic pillows, compared to feather pillows. Reasons for these differences could be lower permeability of feather pillow coverings to allergen, greater house dust mite penetration of synthetic pillow covering, or a combination of both. This study was done to determine the permeability of synthetic and feather pillow coverings to house dust mites and house dust. Twenty live adult house dust mites were seeded on top of a type of synthetic and a type of feather pillow coverings (all in dupicate) with adequate food supply below in sealed culture dished and kept at 23℃ and 70% relative humidity. After 24hr and 48hr house dust mite numbers remaining on top of the coverings were enumerated microscopically. Aliquots of fine house dust (in triplicate) were placed on top of the synthetic and feather pillow coverings, shaken gently for 30min and penetrated dust collected and weighed. After 24hr, all 20 house dust mites had penetrated the standard synthetic pillow coverings, while no house dust mites had penetrated either the feather pillow after 48hr. Dust permeability for the standard synthetic and feather pillow coverings were 0.88% and 0.07%, respectively. These findings of total permeability of standard synthetic pillow coverings to house dust mites, and their greater permeability to house dust could explain their reported higher house dust mite allergen levels, compared to feather pillow coverings.
