Autophagy in Neurodegenerative Diseases: From Mechanism to Therapeutic Approach

Autophagy is a lysosome-dependent intracellular degradation process that allows recycling of cytoplasmic constituents into bioenergetic and biosynthetic materials for maintenance of homeostasis. Since the function of autophagy is particularly important in various stress conditions, perturbation of autophagy can lead to cellular dysfunction and diseases. Accumulation of abnormal protein aggregates, a common cause of neurodegenerative diseases, can be reduced through autophagic degradation. Recent studies have revealed defects in autophagy in most cases of neurodegenerative disorders. Moreover, deregulated excessive autophagy can also cause neurodegeneration. Thus, healthy activation of autophagy is essential for therapeutic approaches in neurodegenerative diseases and many autophagy- regulating compounds are under development for therapeutic purposes. This review describes the overall role of autophagy in neurodegeneration, focusing on various therapeutic strategies for modulating specific stages of autophagy and on the current status of drug development.

We investigated a multi-layer structure for a broadband coherent perfect absorber (CPA). The transfer matrix method (TMM) is useful for analyzing the optical properties of structures and optimizing multi-layer structures. The broadband CPA strongly depends on the phase of the light traveling in one direction and the light reflected within the structure. The TMM simulation shows that the absorption bandwidth is increased by 95% in a multi-layer CPA compared to that in a single-layer CPA.
다문화 중학생의 집단 괴롭힘 피해가 우울에 미치는 영향에서 사회적 위축을 통한 부모 지지의 조절된 매개효과

본 연구는 다문화 청소년의 집단 괴롭힘 피해가 우울에 미치는 영향을 살펴보고, 그 관계에서 사회적 위축의 매개효과와 부모 지지의 조절된 매개효과를 분석하는데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 본 연구에서는 한국청소년정책연구원의 다문화 청소년 패널조사(MAPS) 중 4,056명의 다문화 중학생의 자료를 분석에 활용하였다. 분석 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 다문화 중학생의 집단 괴롭힘 피해 경험이 많을수록 우울 수준이 더 높은 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 사회적 위축은 집단 괴롭힘 피해와 우울의 관계에서 부분 매개효과를 갖는 것으로 나타났다. 즉, 다문화 중학생의 집단 괴롭힘 피해는 우울에 직접적으로 영향을 미칠 뿐 아니라, 사회적 위축을 통해 간접적으로 부정적 영향을 미친다. 셋째, 다문화 중학생의 집단 괴롭힘 피해가 우울에 미치는 영향에서 부모 지지에 의해 조절된 사회적 위축의 매개효과는 통계적으로 유의한 것으로 나타났다. 즉, 부모가 지지적일수록 사회적 위축이 우울에 미치는 영향을 감소하는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구 결과를 바탕으로 집단 괴롭힘 피해를 경험하는 다문화 청소년의 우울과 관련하여 체계적이고 실효성 있는 다문화감수성 교육 제공, 다문화 청소년 대상 사회정서학습 프로그램 제공, 다문화 부모 역량강화 지원 등의 개입 방안을 논의하였다. This study investigated the mediating effect of social withdrawal and the moderated mediating effect of parental support on the relationship between bullying victimization and depression among multicultural middle school students. For analysis, this study used data from 4,056 multicultural middle school students from the Multicultural Adolescents Panel Study conducted by the National Youth Policy Institute. The main findings of the analysis are as follows. First, it was found that the increased experience of bullying victimization is associated with higher levels of depression among the students. Second, bullying victimization is not only directly linked to depression but also indirectly contributes to its increase through social withdrawal. Third, it was found that the more supportive the parents of multicultural adolescents are, the less effect social withdrawal has on depression. Based on the results of this study, intervention measures were discussed aimed at addressing depression among bullied multicultural adolescents, including providing more effective multicultural sensitivity education, SEL programs for bullied multicultural adolescents, and support programs for their parents.
Plasma Amino Acid and Urine Organic Acid Analyses in Leigh Syndrome

Purpose: Detection of abnormal metabolites in plasma amino acid (PAA) and urine organic acid (UOA) analyses has been used to diagnose clinical mitochondrial diseases, such as Leigh syndrome. In this study, the diagnostic values and effectiveness of PAA and UOA analyses were reviewed. Methods: This was a retrospective study of patients with Leigh syndrome who were diagnosed between 2003 and 2018 in a single tertiary care center. Through a whole mitochondrial sequencing and nuclear DNA associated mitochondrial gene panel analysis, 19 patients were found to be positive for mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) mutation-associated Leigh syndrome, and 57 patients were negative. Their PAA and UOA analyses results were then compared. Results: In the comparison of the PAA and UOA analyses results between the two groups, no abnormal metabolites showed obvious differences between the mtDNA mutation-positive Leigh syndrome and mtDNA mutation-negative Leigh syndrome groups. Conclusion: PAA and UOA analyses are inappropriate test methods for diagnosing Leigh syndrome or screening of mtDNA mutation-associated Leigh syndrome. However, UOA analysis might still be a suitable screening test for Leigh syndrome.

InGaAs is a potential candidate for a next-generation channel material of complementary metal-oxidesemiconductordevices based on its excellent electron mobility. In this study, the surface behaviors ofthe InGaAs after treatments in H3PO4/H2O2/H2O and HNO3/H2O2/H2O mixtures were investigated andcompared with that after treatment in a HCl/H2O2/H2O mixture. Although the presence of Cl in an acidicsolution suppressed the overall etching reaction and material loss of the InGaAs surface, Cl induced theroughening of the InGaAs surface. The smallest InGaAs/Al2O3 interface charge trap density was observedwhen the InGaAs surface was prepared in the H3PO4/H2O2/H2O solution. It was also confirmed that theH3PO4/H2O2/H2O-treated InGaAs surface had the highest electron mobility among the samples and thelowest interfacial defect density, such as arsenic vacancies and antisites. Finally, it was concluded thatsurface preparation of InGaAs with H3PO4/H2O2/H2O effectively improved the interfacial electrical propertiesat the metal-oxide-InGaAs semiconductor by successfully minimizing surface roughening and theinterfacial defect density compared to a well-known HCl/H2O2/H2O solution process.
대학생의 감각추구성향과 도박문제의 관계에서 도박인지왜곡의 매개효과와 도박접근성의 조절된 매개효과

본 연구는 대학생의 도박문제를 이해하기 위해 감각추구성향이 도박인지왜곡을 통해 도박문제에 미치는 영향과 도박접근성의 조절된 매개효과를 분석하는데 목적이 있다. 연구를 위해 구글독스에서 제공하는 설문시스템을 통해 구조화된 설문지를 개발하여 대학생을 대상으로 자기보고식 온라인 조사를 수행하였다. 총 481명을 대상으로 감각추구성향, 도박문제, 도박인지왜곡, 도박접근성을 측정하여 SPSS Process Macro를 이용하여 다중회귀분석, 매개효과, 조절된매개효과를 검증하였다. 분석결과, 대학생의 감각추구성향은 도박문제에 정적으로 영향을 미쳤으며, 이러한 상관관계를 도박인지왜곡이 매개하는 것으로 나타났다. 또한, 감각추구성향이 도박인지왜곡을 매개로 도박문제에 미치는 영향이 도박접근성에 의해 조절됨을 확인하였다. 본연구는 이러한 결과를 바탕으로 대학생의 도박문제 발생 원인에 대해 논의하였고, 도박문제의예방과 감소를 위한 실천적⋅정책적 함의를 제시하였다.
