Vol.42 No.-
This thesis treats the activities of the Elector of Bayern, Maximilian I. of Bayern, as an art collector, more exactly saying as a collector of old masters’ paintings. In 1607 Maximilian founded a private art museum or gallery, the so called “Kammergalerie”, in the Residence Palace in Munich. From 1607 to around 1640 he collected and kept more as 80 paintings in the Kammergalerie. A large part of these paintings which were in the Kammergalerie, are being displayed in the Munich art museum ‘Alte Pinakothek’ today. The art historical documents with help of which we could restore Maximilian’s artistic interest, collecting activities and his knowledge about old paintings, include the so called “Kammergalerieinventories” and Maximilian’s letters. Most of all, the Kammergalerie-inventories are very useful and important for our purpose. To study and to analyse these Kammergalerie-inventories as contemporary art historical documents, makes it possible to discern that Maximilian preferred a number of painters from Germany and Netherlands of the Renaissance period, such as Albrecht Durer, Lucas Cranach the elder and Lucas of Leiden. The same study also shows that Maximilian took a very close and professional look at the paintings which he owned in his Kammergalerie. This can be argued, for the inventories give not only themes of the paintings, painter names, their production dates, painting techniques and their size, but also sometimes a painting’s provenience and even art historical information on a painter. However indeed Maximilian’s knowledge about the painting art was so much excellent that it went beyond the boundary of a simple professional art reception. As the letters which are quoted in this thesis prove well, Maximilian also knew how to plan a practical project such as painting transport. This paper focuses another significant matter which happened in the Kammergalerie, as well, namely to paint over the original works. This phenomenon of being over-painted by a third hand is a sign which implies that Maximilian’s art understanding was, in spite of his modern art knowledge, different from our own understanding on art works.
